Sri Lanka Cycle Tour 2020

- A short film about a 3 week bicycle tour around Sri Lanka between February and March 2020 totalling 1763km.

We started on the west coast in Negombo, headed north to Jaffna, down the east coast to Trincomalee, then on to Kandy in the hilly central region via Sigiriya. From Kandy we dropped down to Kirinda on the south coast passing through the Ruhuna National Park, then back to Negombo via Galle.
We took camping gear but always managed to find guest houses or hotels to stay in for all of the nights (though on one day we had to ride 160km to get to it...).
Mark rode an aluminium Koga Miyata World Traveller (700C), John was on a steel Surly Troll (26") converted to drop bars.
We set off on the trip just before the covid situation got serious, and got home (Mark to Japan, John to Europe) just as things were getting a lot more serious.
Sri Lanka is a fantastic country to visit with a great variety of scenery, geography, cultural attractions and wildlife, and is also great for cycle touring. People (including myself before I went there) have visions of it being very busy, and many towns and some main roads are, but there are plenty of quiet roads which are perfect for cycling on.
On top of all that, the people are amazingly friendly, cheerful and kind.

Finally a travel video that is from real people, not influencers (i.e. I like the style - and it's bicycle travel too and gives a taste of what it could be like to cycle there. Looks promising)

Really excellent video guys - thanks for posting, i've been planning to ride in Sri Lanka for some time but have not been able to get there bc of work and covid - route would have been similar to yours.... hopefully soon i will be able! Look forward to more adventures.

Great video, thank you for sharing guys. Thinking of doing a Sri Lanka tour when Covid is clear (travel is allowed). Wondering, did you get extra hands/help on the drone shots? Where did you keep the bike box? Wifi, google map any issues? Thanks in advance.
Hi Hamdan, many thanks and glad you enjoyed it. I flew the drone myself using my mobile phone to control it. We left the bike boxes at the hotel in Negombo. We’d prebooked to stay there at the start and finish of the ride. Mark got a local SIM card at the airport for his phone and it worked well. Good luck with the trip plannings!

Can I ask a few questions:
You made the route between Kandy and Nuwura Eliya in 1 day with a lot of elevation gain!!! Was it difficult???
Some roads are made of dirt and stones. Have you had flat tires?
Have you had to transport your bikes on a train?
Is it possible to transport the bicycle suitcase by tuktuk?

Hello JM, thank you and glad you liked it! Yes, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya in 1 day was very tough. We finished at night time. Might be best to do it in 2 days. We did not ride much on dirt roads, and I do not remember getting any punctures. We use Schwalbe Marathon tryes we are very puncture resistant. I have put a bicycle in a box on the roof of a tuktuk before, but we did not do that in Sri Lanka. We did not use the train either in Sri Lanka, but I am sure it's not a problem. Hello Hussein, the best way is to cycle regularly. A couple of times per week, with a longer weekend ride of maybe 80km. Also ride up hills to get strength.
wonderful video. As you mentioned, street dogs are annoying here. I'm sure you had a few king coconuts to drink while cycling. That's the best energy drink
Thank you Viraj! It was a great trip in a great country, and we were not bitten by any dogs luckily! We did have a few coconut drinks.
It seems you had problems finding hotels and when you did find them they was expensive.
