years ago i started out at us/steel lorain works 1st job was in 4 seamless hot end so this video is accurate they run a heated billet thru piercer rolls punches a hole thru the billet then elongation and straightening, in the machine shop i bored out the piercer rolls to fit on the shafts they really big rolls about 48 inch od
I used to work at Timken Alloy Steel Europe and the first time i was shown the piercing process i was standing on a walkway above where the piercing plug meets the billet and it took a great effort of will not to run away as every brain cell was screaming at me "no way is that going to work" :)
ah it is interesting how stuff is made, soo raw and hot, but also done by giant machines that would make the innerchild happy, there is a company here I belive called scot that makes this kind of tubing as well in indiana.
The Timken Company is the company that makes bearings. TimkenSteel Corporation is a separate company formed in 2014. Prior to 2014 the steel business was a division of The Timken Company
I STARTED OUT IN 4 SEAMLESS US/STEEL CORP ON THE HOT END THE HEAT THE BILLET ROTARY FURNACE TAKE IT OUT PUT THE BILLET IN THE PEIRCER ROLLS IT COMES OUT THE OTHER SIDE A STEEL LANCE WITH A HARDENED POINT HITS THE BILLET AND PUTS A HOLE IN IT AS IT ROLLS DOWN THE LENGHT OF THE LANCE PIERCER ROLLS WEIGH AROUND 5 TONS 4 FEET DIAMETER
I would absolutely love a tour!!!!

Is this a division of the same company that makes roller bearings?
Yes, in Canton, Ohio. The bearing plant is gone.
