UPDATE ON BGS CHANGES: BGS Sent an email out, they said based on feedback they will NOT be making any changes at this time. They actually listened! Email Below; Dear loyal Beckett customers,
We are grateful for the feedback and insights you have shared with us over the past 48 hours. Your passion for our brand and hobby is truly remarkable, and we appreciate your support.
After listening carefully to the feedback you all shared, we have decided not to make any changes to our grading scale at this time. We will keep you updated with an official announcement later next week regarding improvements to our grading scale. We thank you for your continued trust and loyalty to Beckett. Please continue to share your thoughts and feedback directly with us.
I think the biggest potential issue BGS faces here is the boat loads of “min gem” BGS slabs out there that people have paid a lot of money for because they wanted a “gem”. It appears those will no longer be gem mint if they make this change to their scale. 3 9.5s and a 9 will now be “mint plus” like the SGC scale. That won’t please many people holding those!
I'm in this boat, with A LOT of min gem mints... but the True Quad's are in the same boat too. I'd estimate well over 50% probably closer to 75% of Gem Mint are Min or True. This change doesn't help.... but maybe this opens some eyes in the hobby that pay tremendous premiums for a slab; that you may be reholdering in 5, 10, 15 years.
One thing that I like about Beckett slabs are the thickness of them. I am an SGC fan as well although CSG has been slowly creeping up my list of favorites. Enjoyed and thanks for sharing.
CSG has the best acrylic. HGA is the only one to slab horizontally and their matching labels are amazing. CSG upgraded their Green labels to make them more appealing... Beckett should focus less on their grading scale and more on updating their hideous (IMHO) label. Automatic turn-off for me.
The most accurate is SGC psa amd BGS I’m not gonna send to BGS anymore after my new ones come back idk if they got graded with the new scale or old scale idk how that will affect sales and the value
It's about time BGS did something, hopefully they don't screw it up. Beckett is a huge brand for anyone that collected in the 80-90s and early 2000s, but for anyone that started in the last 10-15 years the Beckett name doesn't mean much. Beckett had to figure out how to stay relevant
I took advantage of the $9 Topps MLB Series 1 baseball and I look forward to getting my first tuxedos back. There was a great interview of the SCG President on Junk Wax Hero and it sold me on making them my go to for grading.
I love what they are trying to do, but this announcement is a miss. Having different ways a card can be graded a 10, with 2 being a 10 Pristine and 2 Gem Mint isn't going to work. The solution could be that Beckett stop grading with sub grades all together and the new grades moving forward are as follows: 10 - Pristine (make them all black) 9.5 - Mint + 9 - Mint etc. As for cards previously graded Gem Mint 9.5, if the card owner wants to submit for a re-grade/slab they can and it becomes a 10 but the slab says "previously graded Gem Mint 9.5 on ________" I don't know what the right answer is, but I am pretty confident when I say that this new scale as announced is going to make a lot of BGS 10 and 9.5 card holders unhappy.
Thanks for sharing the news Dustin. BGS is clearly #4 with me as far as grading companies go. Not a fan of them using a sleeve with the slab. Card just doesn't stand out like it should. Now, that doesn't stop me from buying BGS slabs at the right price as I trust the grade. I get the change, CSG did the same thing because people want 10s. That being said, it is going to be interesting to see how they handle old 9.5s. CSG did the right thing by offering a $5 reholder special. I think it would be a good move by BGS to do the same.
Maybe an April Fools image? Can anyone link to an announcement to this? Mint Collective event started yesterday, announcements for this should be everywhere.
That’s what I was thinking. I’m seeing this image make the rounds online, but I can’t find the source of the image, or any leaked documents to back it up. Apparently Beckett is supposed to be making this announcement tomorrow, April Fools’ Day, so I definitely am going to wait to see what the official word is.
What happens if you have 1-9 subgrade and 1-10 and 2 9.5, or 2-10, 1-9.5, and one 9 subs? Wow, this would not be good for some giant 9.5 BGS cards I have and I also have a lot of pre-2017 auto cards that are 9.5 with 10 autos. I should have bought PSA now.
I think they'll just upgrade the 9's with more than one 9.5 subgrade to a 9.5 mint plus grade. They won't downgrade a 9.5 with a 9 on the centering to a mint plus 9. I don't think it's worth the hassle sending them in to be relabelled. To risky sending in a $100k BGS 9.5 with two 10 subgrades to be relabelled as it could get lost in the post or stolen. Presume the just colour differentiate the pristine 10's with the gem mints.
@@DanielCordone9 makes sense what you’re saying. Also agree doesn’t make sense to change some of them. I do own one of the 6 BGS 10 1990 Score Bo Jackson B&W Shoulder pads cards that I would love to see in a Black Label if the rule changes on that one. Not to sell, just bc it would look so good!!
Long time BGS supporter, and overall not trilled; but you could argue doing nothing wouldn't help BGS either. I think fixing other issues would be the priority for BGS; but maybe this is the hail mary; that could maybe pay off, or help. My last bulk Sub from Beckett in 2022, had 56 Gem Mint.... ONLY 2 of those would qualify for the new 10 Gem Mint. BGS may also be shooting themselves in the foot again.
I LOVE BGS! Their grade scales say more about the card as a hole than a more common PSA10. I have to say I really like the new grading co, TAG. they grade more on the idea of a real diamond and the deeper flaws a card really has. if you know what I am trying to say.
Help me out with something. When I hold an SGC slab in one hand and a csg slab in the other, the difference in quality is stark and it favors CSG. SGC feels inferior to all the slabs out there, in my opinion, and while the tux look can elevate a card, the quality of the plastic is just far inferior. Why do you personally like them best?
Unfortunately, We have to agree. Yes, Grading by SGC is well above par, but the Execution of their efforts and energies is wasted at the final phase of service delivery, by the continuation of using old product encasement plastics, where a newer and more contemporaneous encapsulation method, would likely elevate SGC within, say 1-3 Summers to a Solid Position of Position2 in the sports card authentication and grading arena, respectively.
It’s simple, BGS is loosing market share. People like 10’s, so make it easier to get 10s. PSA is so inconsistent right now, it’s a good move. Will be interesting to see how they handle current slabs.
this would destroy all their current 10 grades. millions would be lost be high end collectors and millions would be given to low end collectors. it would tank beckett
It’s because their website sucks. Psa have constantly made performance improvements to their site, label, pop reports, etc. psa grew and improved all the while committing to excellent customer service. Bgs dis nothing
yeah I think you meant the PSA 10. Yes expecting some price fluctuation due to the Mavs possibly not making the playoffs. As stated in the video, 'narrative' lol I also just love the card and not ready to give up on Luka quite yet
This is great.. I have a ton of BGS 9.5's, and by no means do I feel entitled to getting free new labels (10's) put on them all now, just because of this change. Folks want their 9.5's in a 10 that could make a difference in a future sale, then resubmit, and I'm sure they'll hook it up, win win.. but not for free.. Anyone who thinks so, I'd like to know, in the fantasy world they live in, are there rides? Beckett would have to literally close shop for the next 2 years or more, to focus solely on the relabeling of cards for entitled little babies.. Life goes on, this is good, I think the only people worried are folks who are diehards with another companies, and BGS just got that much better again lol.. The only folks worried are your SGC, and PSA because Beckett just got a bit more desirable out here.. Not good when a company improves right?

This is actually great, the only ones mad are those who are holding too many lower 9.5s. A GEM should never be less than a 10 grade, it never made sense that anyone would compared a PSA 10 to a BGS 9.5, it should always be 10s vs 10s. Also the Black Labels just became more prestigious, you will not get those any easier. I LIKE IT..!!
They just screwed their customers by reducing the value of the cards by adding this classification or tier of grading scale. I’d take my business elsewhere.

The other grading companies steal margin by up charging for the value of your card. SCG doesn’t do that. Huge distinction.
That doesn't make. Especially doing that type of announcement close to April 1st. It's either a joke or a very bad communication exercise.

BGS IS 2 years too late in changing their standards. They lost most credibility with their PATENT LABEL.
What is the patent label?
Change 9.5 to 10s, move subgrades online, provide an over grading guarantee, stick to high end stuff and stop grading low end
I don't see how they could not replace the qualifying 9.5s.
I have a lot of bgs 9.5 football cards, including a Marshawn Lynch rookie ticket auto. Could be bad news....
Another awesome video my friend
Thank you!
You might as well look at all BGS 9.5's as PSA 10'S coz thats all BGS give out is 9.5's
