20 March 2022
Lincolnshire Posy - Percy Grainger (arr. Matt Johnston)
Programme Notes from the arranger:
From 1905-06, Grainger travelled around Lincolnshire, England, collecting and documenting local folk songs. Grainger referred to this piece as his “bunch of musical wildflowers” dedicated to “the old folksingers who sang so sweetly to me”.
Brian’s Musings:
The works by Grainger are among my favourite in the wind band literature. Born in Australia in 1882, Grainger was an eccentric composer, and a champion of Nordic music and culture. Part of his eccentricism shows in his music notation: he insists on using performance directions in English, instead of in Italian which is the norm. Amusing examples include “singingly” (cantabile); “louden bit by bit” (crescendo poco a poco); and “very sharp” (molto marcato). To my ears, a lot of his orchestration and writing sound like early British wind band music, but with a distinctively whimsical flair.
In the late 19th century, wind ensembles and wind bands began to form and establish, but due to the lack of music written specially for these ensembles, they mainly played military marches, and orchestral pieces, transcribed for wind ensemble. In the early 20th century, Grainger was among the few wave of composers who began writing original music for this relatively new configuration of instruments.
Lincolnshire Posy comprises six movements, based on field recordings of folksongs that Grainger had recorded:
i. "Lisbon"
ii. "Horkstow Grange"
iii. "Rufford Park Poachers"
iv. "The Brisk Young Sailor"
v. "Lord Melbourne"
vi. "The Lost Lady Found"

Not A Clarinet Choir is a mosaic; a collective of clarinetists from different backgrounds, based in Singapore. As a new group, we aim to explore the possibilities and push the boundaries of clarinet music, with a keen ear for detail, and an open mind for collaboration. We are led by our music director, Brian Lim.
In March 2022 we hosted our first concert to a full house, and we are looking forward to more projects in the future. The group also participated in the recent Singapore International Band Festival 2022, Division Ensemble 1 and clinched the top prize, Gold with Distinction, with the highest score across the entire ensemble division.
