I am battling endless white flies in Clarksville! I'm trying James' recommendation, but there are so many and it's so dang hot. It's making me feel discouraged. No way am I giving up though
Make sure you don't bury the seeds at all, lettuce needs the light to sprout. also don't sprinkle the seed too thick. keep the soil moist and in good light, about 6 hours of sunlight is fine. they can handle shade but will get spindly
Your advise is solid gold, JP and Tuck! I live in East Tennessee, and am on the edge of 7B and 8A. I followed your August advice, and I'm going to have food DEEP into the winter! Many thanks!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm only 4 minutes into this video and I just wanted to say thank you for not just giving a general list, but that you also recommend varieties and advise on how to plant. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And give Tuck a little belly scratch from all of us.
Growing up, we always had a summer garden. I didn't even know until late winter last year that there are options to grow into fall and partially winter. Thank you for all your information!
Thanks for the information James. Keeping the garden soil covered with edible plants over the cold season is awesome; I mean the summer heat is nice; but fall is way cooler😋.
Thank you for the tips on better germination for beets and spinach. I have been struggling with this for a while. Praying that Little Tuck is ok. He is such a cutie pie!
Hearts for Tuck! I've a Shiz Tzu (spelled ???) Cooper and he hates the heat and I'm pretty careful to make sure he can be cool or in the shade and we don't stay out long. He adds such joy to my days that I want to take good care of him. He is about 10 years old I think. He is a rescue, so I'm not sure of his actual age.
@@jamesprigioni He is the smartest dog I've ever had and as I am 68 I've had a lot of dogs from poodles to an Irish wolfhound. Cooper is my best bud day and night.
@@cherienicholas5649I've had poodles and an Irish wolf hound who truly scared the ** of all the manly guys. But that giant dog wouldn't harm a fly. Both breeds were maximum smart. Getting a Tuck impersonator next time, if that's even remotely possible. Haha ❤❤❤❤❤for Tuck
@@cmc6295 The Irish wolfhounds are truly the heartbreak breed though. Our Bran stole our hearts but we got him from an unreliable dealer who didn't reveal that he'd had distemper as a puppy before we bought him. This caused him to succumb to kidney failure at a very early age. We were heartbroken to loose this noble giant!
Great tips, Mr . James! Love your channel and boundless enthusiasm! love growing veggies in the cooler weather. The only pests that bother them are aphids; everything else hibernates. I'm in zone 7 a/b - sort of borderline, and have successfully grown both spinach and parsley all winter with no protection. Landis Lettuce is another good variety of winter lettuce. Mulched, it will grow all winter. You can also put in Brussel sprouts now for an early harvest in spring. Annnnd if you have a carport or garage, if you grow in buckets (which I have done), you can grow cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli during the winter. They grow slower, but they will produce. Going to try lettuce in a bucket this year, too. Just watch the weather and move the buckets to the garage or carport if it's going to terribly cold. This also works for Brussels sprouts. Happy gardening, y'all!
Another great video JP and Tuck. I happen to be a big fan of Mokum carrots (since around 2002). They are some of the sweetest most tender carrots around, and they do mature quickly. You will never get Mokum carrots in a grocery store, as the tops break too easily and they cannot be mechanically harvested. Another benefit of growing your own: veggies and varieties you can only find at a farmers market, like Japanese salad turnips, Mokum carrots, kohlrabi, Sungold cherry tomatoes.
So inspiring! I'm in the process of building 3 more raised beds for winter. Last fall I added one of your PVC and plastic covers to my raised bed and it was a game changer! ❤ for Tuck!
Good morning James and Tuck; missed you Tuck hopefully today will be cool enough for you to venture outside! Great video again; inspiring for my fall and winter garden. ❤❤❤ for you Tuck the garden boss, guardian and the young king.❤️❤️❤️😀
Hey King Tuck, ❤❤❤ missed you in the vid but know you’ll inspire us again soon. Thanks to you too Jim. You’re keeping me motivated when it looks/ feels like the season is winding down (5b).
Aghhhh!!! I forgot my spinach seeds in the fridge Nd they had 5” roots! I planted them anyway along with done fresh seeds. Thanks for your encouragement. 🎉
James, You are such an inspiration! I started gardening again in my raised 4 X 8 Cedar Bed. Learning about the Kaolin Clay, I purchased a XL Raised 32” Bed and a 4 X 8 Cover System as well as a Seed Starting Kit. Lastly I ordered the two cold lettuce variety’s! Looking forward to this fall and especially next season. I can finally grow cucumbers and squash again with the cover, then the Kaolin Clay! I have had a huge problem with cucumber beetles and vine borers. I have tried tying panty hose around the stems and tries beneficial nematodes in the past with no luck. Thanks for all the great content!
I'm in Sacramento, California and we have an incredibly long growing season. Most plants are really beginning to produce a lot, the HEAT is a problem even with the shade cloth. The trick is attempting to start brassicas when we might have a few triple digit days next week. It's even too hot im my garage greenhouses. I do have tree collards that are doing well in the heat. I don't like buying lettuce and other greens but it's too hot to grow my own😊 I still appreciate the long growing season.
For some reason I am having trouble growing parsley and other herbs this year. I tried three ways this year, I first tried growing indoors in March, second I tried to grow directly into the ground and third, I tried to grow them in a container. Only one Basil plant grew. I not it is where I am keeping my seeds in the summer months. I keep them in the shed and in the winter I keep them in my garage, where it is cold during the winter months. All of my other plants grew well. Tomato, zucchini , peppers and cucumber plants.
Awesome ,September planting new things to taste, as a child I didn’t like beets and spinach 😅I’m actually going to eat this . Thanks James ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the good information. I was a zone 9b all of my life now I'm a 7b. I need to learn when and what to plant at the right times. Late January/February was the only time I didn't plant out seeds or plants in zone 9b but that's what my greenhouse was for. I went from sandy soil to heavy clay and rocks. Everything is a new to me.
I have so much to learn and experiment with having come from subtropical QLD Australia to CT. It's a very different growing climate and incredibly short growing time frame here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for the encouragement James! Doing what we can here in 5b/6a. Can you do a video on your special fertilizer. I buy more quality fertilizers and yours is still almost double the price. Thanks and Godspeed sir, :J
Brown Dutch lettuce likes harsh conditions. I pulled winter Daikon in late November of last year. Bunching onions will last until spring of next year. I have a salad :) I'm zone 5 where it gets really cold in winter time.
Just planted some Early Wonder beets that only take 55-65 days. I bought them to plant in spring for an early harvest but hopefully this works too I’m trying tatsoi for the first time this year. We’ll see how it goes!
Thanks. I love growing these foods. But I have to wait until around November. Still over 100 F here in the low desert. So I am still growing summer greens like Egyptian spinach and Malabar spinach.
I have a Swiss Chard plant still producing food in its second year in zone 6b. It will get tucked in the greenhouse again. Lettuce is so fun to grow. Already sprouting away. Grew lettuce well into winter and early spring last year. Will definitely try the tips with spinach. ♥♥♥♥♥
❤❤❤❤❤❤ for Tuck. The weather has been nuts. We had four days in the high 70’s with nights in the 50’s Now we’re dealing with temps in the mid 90’s and NO rain. The tomatoes & squash are done. The cukes never produced. Only the peppers, okra and Swiss chard are doing well.
Zone 6b. Last winter was mild here. Wish we had planted more as we removed the finished tomatoes and etc . Thanks James and Tuck for all the enjoyment and knowledge. The utube ads are running. Hope your chan get some money for it.
Thanks for the suggestions. Last year I invested in a small cold frame with an automatic lid. I am also in 7a with about the same first frost date as you. Last winter was pretty mild here in NY and I was able to grow lettuce, bok choy and other greens most of the winter. It’s a fun challenge to push the envelope!
Have you ever tried growing turnip greens. You can eat the root and the greens. If you do not let the root grow more than about 3” inches in diameter they will be really sweet when cooked. I always peel them and they turn out really good. You can freeze and pressure can them. You can also roast the roots. They are also really easy to grow.
When do you transition your summer garden into fall gardening? When do you take out the tomato plants and zucchini and eggplants? I only have a small patch to garden so my fall plantings will have to wait till the summer crops go out.
Did you grow sweet potatoes? Ive nit seen them in any of your videos yet, but Im still watching your older videos. Im growing them in North Dakota, a really cold state, and they are doing fantastic.
