  • In this project video I show you how I made a bowl from pear. This bowl is gold leafed on the outside and a patina/pattern applied using Intrinsic colour from Hampshire Sheen. The inside is then finished with Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen high gloss wax.

    You are such a beautiful turner John loving your artistic style. I really need to learn to use a bowl gouge sometime. Explained very well thanks for sharing. :-)

    Great job John. I was surprised to see how the colour took over the gold leaf.
    Well done!

      Paul Lockwood thanks. I discovered the process by accident. The trick is to dry it off quickly and then seal it. Just sprayed in it comes off very easily

    Very nice work John :) I have never worked with Pear wood. I have a few good size pieces drying for making hand planes and tools. I will save some for turning with after watching this ॐ

    I enjoyed your video and the process very much, John. Thank you! I would have liked to see a closeup (maybe a still) of the finished bowl, to see how it looks when completed.

      @JohnClothier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. There is a still photo at the end of the video showing it close up.

    • @mch000

      Thanks, John! That photo at the end is just what I was looking for.
      Did the patterns (black on gold) come about through the hair dryer plowing the paints or through the seams from the leaf sheets? Do you cut or thin the paint so that it stays wet longer (when I airbrush paints or stains, they seem to dry too quickly to be blown around).

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mch000 the joins in the leafing don't have any noticeable effect, it is down to natural pooling of the stain and the hair dryer. The hair dryer blowing the stains about causes the bigger more defined lines. As for the stain itself, I use the Hampshire sheen intrinsic water based stains. I do nothing to them they are straight out of the bottle.

    From the middle of California, John, I'm new subscriber. Love how this bowl turned out...beautiful! I wonder if leaving it all gold works? I'll keep watching and hope at some point you will make one. You are quite an artist!!!

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for coming along and subscribing! I have done them when I have left just the gold, although no ton a video. Personal;y I think the colour over the top gives it some character than the gold on its own lacks. Thank you that is very kind of you!

    Another great job John and the pear looks like a good wood to turn
    When you turn the bowl around do you have to clean the recess to help hold it and do the jaws mark the gold leaf?

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Graham Wood Thanks Graham. Pear is lovely to turn. It was my first time with it and I really like the finish it has. I don't apply leaf into the recess I leave it wood. Layer I would go back and put my makers Mark in there and maybe some colour or enamel paint

    John - great work! About the intrinsic's - is that a brand, or a type of finish? Also, is it a dye, or a paint? As I'm in the States, I may not have that available to me, but might be able to find something close.
    Thanks!!

      Lost River Wood Shop thanks Mike. Intrinsic are a brand of water based wood dyes. They are available in the USA or if you stick around, over the next couple of weeks there may well be an opportunity for you to get your hands on some for free. Else here is a link
