- How to make marbled polymer clay rings with Fimo soft. This polymer clay tutorial is suitable for beginners (it's so easy even your children could do it!).
I made this video in response to a viewers DM about ring making for kids and after some experimentation I discovered this cool technique for making rings with polymer clay.
Making these rings was great fun and I hope it inspires you to get creative and make some interesting jewellery. It might even keep the kids occupied for an afternoon!

Dan a very good video. Simple technique aimed at the whole family and Christmas just around the corner. The plastic measuring triangles are set squares. Previously used as drawing aides when producing technical drawings.

Very cool. I have made rings out of just polymer clay before and it was fun. :) It was the reason I bought a metal ring mandrel so I could bake the clay on the mandrel. Do be careful what kind of plastic you let the clay touch or store it in. Polymer clay will "eat" some plastics if left in contact long enough. Also clay left out will eventually dry out but it will take a long time and even if not left out. Sometimes I have bought it from the stores dried out and crumbly. I had to spend a long time reconditioning it and adding oils to get it workable again. :) Would love to see more rings like this using Polymer Clay. - Heidi

@@ZebranoWoodCraft Yeah I learned the hard way a few times when I accidentally left plastic things near my clay. It ate holes in some of it and some was just melted. Also glad you mentioned mokume gane. I love doing that with polymer clay. So many patterns you can make the possibilities are endless. :D Oh and I use cooking oils to recondition severely dried out clay.

Love your video shows everyone that you don't have to have all fancy tools to make something fantastic. I use a sharp medium size kitchen knife to cut my clay.

You can like your pan or whatever you use for the oven part with aluminum foil so that you can use it with food again (after the foil is removed)

Polymer clay can be made to look like so many stones, gems and stone. It's very versatile - but it has a "cheap" resale value because it is plastic after all. But these look very nice.
Thank you! Yeah it’s not as magical as a rare mineral or fossil but still an interesting material. I’m looking forward to learning a lot more techniques :)

Can you do the clay and then wood (vaneer) inside the clay? Or inlay the wood after the bake?
Wonder if the clay would work on a Brentwood blank, then bake, then cut a groove for sterling wire inset, then cover with .CA or epoxy?
Could you keep it shallow in the channel and then use uv resin over it?

A resin top coat, or varnish. Uv resin works pretty good and is easier to use since it's an almost instant cure. But if you're not careful with what type(there are many) and how you apply it. It could peel or chip off. Well, any of these things could chip or peel if the surface isnt prepared properly. Make sure to let cure for long enough too. Anyway. I use my uv nail gel top coat to finish. Its probably the easiest to use as it comes in a brush on bottle like normal polish. But when I use other uv gels and resins, I just use a flat brush, or toothpicks at times. I am not talking about using regular nail polish top coat. Most nail polish reacts with the polymer clay and will turn sticky and goopy over time. Anyhooo, sorry for the book. I hope it helps tho:) lol

@@cattfishing Using a varnish, you wouldn’t need to sand and polish down the final ring, right? From my limited understanding, varnish just applies a transparent shine to the product, would that be all? Thanks!

I don’t think they’d stand up to serious punishment but they’d be hella cheap to replace!

To cook polymer clay in an oven place the item in a foil baking tray and then clip another one on top and you are then safe to use in your oven, hope this helps.
Wonder if there is enough colors to be able to make all 12 birthstone colors out of this clay?
Polymer clay comes in just about any colour

Yeah man there’s a lot of colours but as long as you have red, blue and yellow you can mix anything you like :)
Can you use wood?
Yeah definitely. Very different process but you could inlay wood into metal cores. I’m sure there’s a way to inlay clay into wood too :)

I bought some Fimo clay and it’s so hard I’ll never buy this brand again! I had some premo for years and it’s still soft.

No no no… don’t put your polymer clay in an oven that you use all the time for baking food you eat. It’s toxic. Please get a little tiny toaster oven and bake your clay in that.😙
