  • I loves me some Marvin!
This one resonated with me today, with all the proposed changes to the EPA and other protections for the world we live in at risk, it feels like now is the time to hear this message again. The beauty of the introduction of this remix lies in the intricate vocal harmonies, I wanted you to hear Marvin like he was in your living room and I am very happy with the result.
The emotional impact of the thoughtful and deeply felt lyrics sung a capella made me cry. Such a beautiful lament from his influential landmark LP from 1971, "What's Going On". The LP was quite controversial according to Berry Gordy, who was not behind this new direction Marvin was heading in. Gaye was sensitive to the maelstrom of turmoil especially after hearing stories from his brother Frankie, who served in Vietnam. He knew he had to express it creatively. Motown felt that the mixes on the album were terrible and it was left to Phil Jones, company music executive to tell Gaye to fix it. Gaye resisted and Jones listened to it again, then shipped the LP the way it was. Motown need not have worried, when the album dropped on January 20, 1971 it exploded within a day and the title track was the #1 R&B hit for five weeks starting March 27, 1971.
Back in 1983, I lost my Dad to lung cancer in the spring. At the time, I was a McDonald's second assistant manager at a Toronto location blocks away from the Canadian National Exhibition where he was performing. In addition, the Police Picnic was at the outdoor theatre nearby that emptied out onto the same street called Dufferin and there was a kids league soccer tournament down King Street. It was a safe be to say that we would get slaughtered after the concerts, there were all sold out. I was only there a few months and I was left alone with Sheldon a new trainee manager who had yet to experience the horrors of an after concert rush.
When the crowds started arriving en masse, I made the decision to drop lobby and lot duties to keep up with the massive wave of hungry customers. I directed Sheldon to handle customer complaints at the counter and to pull cash from the drawers and put it in the safe, cos it would have been a perfect time to get held up. I was stocking the kitchen so they would not have to leave their stations so we could operate at top speed, and had time to empty garbage bags, but not wipe down and clean litter in and around the store. We got them in and out in record time, keeping the lines moving not more than 5 minutes in and out.
When the crowd died out, I directed staff to clean up and was turning around when the store manager came in to see how we were doing. Sheldon and I were eviscerated in front of staff for not keeping EVERYTHING together, ie clean lobby and lot. Truth is we were not adequately staffed, and then the store manager left letting us know how disappointed he was. We were completely deflated especially after the heroic effort to maintain customer wait time and good service. Sheldon was down like a dog, so I told him to take a break.
While the staff was cleaning up, I sat in the lobby with a coffee, gathering my thoughts and courage. The next thing I know, this huge limo pulls up to the store and out of it walks six or seven fine black women dressed up in black sequined dresses, hats with a few black feathers and four big black muscle men also dressed in black walked up to the counter. I watched them admiring how they were all wearing black. While they ordered, no one noticed the slim, tall man with a navy blue shirt, grey slacks and a black captain's hat who sauntered in and then leaned up against the counter that separated the service area from the eating area.
Suddenly feeling the power that entered the room I realized who it was and I ran behind the counter and told the cook/counter staff that Marvin Gaye had arrived and not to freak out. They did me proud and we completed their rather large take out order. I decided to comp the meals, and told the bodyguard who was to pay to not worry about it. They took their food and the bodyguard I spoke to went up to Marvin, and I guess told him what I did. Marvin looked directly at me, flashed that brilliant smile and I was totally in his universe. He nodded at me, and I was in heaven. He then left with his entourage and as they drove away, I was overcome with emotion.
I had just connected with one of the greatest musical talents ever and the disgrace that the Store Manager heaped upon me was gone. I felt lighter and realized that things were going to get better after all. I will never forget that encounter, I think about it every time I hear Marvin, he helps me get through the tough times. I left the job soon after that and did go on to a much better position elsewhere.

I was 17 years old when I heard the tragic news of Marvin Gaye being killed. You couldn't tell me that what I heard wasn't a terrible April Fool's Joke, the day before his birthday and only 6 days before mine. A local radio station played a tribute to him all day and my cousin and me sat by the radio and recorded everything! Marvin was speaking TRUTH and it was almost like a prophet. The first record I ever bought was the title track to this amazing album and I was 5 years old. Today we face the same issues in society and amazingly this album has stood the test of time. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this ground breaking movement and it is as relevant today if not more that back in 1971. We lost a king...a musical giant...GENIUS! Rest In Peace Brother Marvin...you will always be MARVELOUS MARVIN to me.

Marvin Gaye left behind a godly message: it brings me to tears the way he and many other good people leave this testing ground called earth. It's a spiritual battle and the enemy does not allow a good deed to go unpunished. To all you Believers, though difficult with the flesh (the dirt of our existence) stay true in spirit and in the Presence of our Lord and GOD. Amen.

I'm a white man who grew up in the 1960's ghetto. Aside foro the Beatles, Marvin Gaye is the reason I was drawn to music, piano but especially singing. Marvin's singing was dynamic/magic, the arrangements were heaven. Marvin overcame a great deal of adversity in his lifetime as I did so I could relate. God Bless Marvin Gaye, a terrific human being, a man of ALL people and a genius.

And then, the assassinations one after another. The album is underrated in my opinion. He received NAACP Image Award in 1971 but it took the Grammy’s 37 years this year to acknowledge it’s greatness. All I know is it’s one of the albums I listened to over and over in the dark when I was a kid.

If they allowed the dems, and the majority of the public that agree that changes/reforms are urgently needed. America would b so much stronger along with the rest of the world.

@@cessaly100 Right!! I know, me and my sister heard the news stated at the same time over the radio at home and went running downstairs to inform our mom about what had just been broadcast over the air. I remember the stunned expression on our mother's face when we relayed the news to her. We were all just truly depressed and devastated by the news, and I'm also extremely sorry to say that at the time I also felt a malicious desire to hear that Marvin's father was soon to depart this world as well, via electric chair!
Now I was 22 yrs old at that time and I had a major crush on Marvin Gaye, so there was that. Now I've reached the age of 59, and I was baptised as well as saved in church, so I have a different perspective on Marvin's dad today. However I must also relay to you that my future husband resembled Marvin in the face, so deduce from that what you will. It is what it is, I'll say no more.

It's been awhile since I last heard this song 🎵 and today I had to hear it. Every single time I hear this song has a very profound effect on me . Tears flow freely and this is my favorite version. I was about 14 when this song came out. I was already aware of our environment suffering pollution from the sky to the sea . It's not getting better they're killing mothervearth and the poison is killing everything living even us. Thank you for this remix it's the best . Wake up people. It's 2023.

Up until this song came out there had never been anything that sounded like this song. A complete original in every way which is rare. It was the last song on side A and by the time it went off you were frozen. That big gothic ending was the strangest thing we’d ever heard. It took months for me to turn the album over to play the B side. Most of us ( when it first came out) played the whole side A while sitting on the couch with this contemplative stare on our faces. Till this day nothing else sounds like it. That’s 50 years ago. Black people became serious listeners after that album. You may not believe this but God interrupted every day life and injected this message into the psyche of the listener. Marvin said he didn’t remember any of the recording process because “ God wrote this album”. There’s not an issue on side A that God Himself is not concerned about. You had to see it! Go to the live version and look at the faces of the audience. That’s the look I’m talking bout!
