The leading hypothesis is that Wyrms basically exist so they can make dragons that don't get benefits from Dragon support, because dragons are good, have lots of support, and there must be more dragons (obviously) but you can't make dragons too good.

    • @hi-i-am-atan

worth noting that wyrm have a summoner monk and _two_ rotas without the level restriction, the generic one also having a mode that rummages without any loss of card advantage. if anything, it's the other way around - wyrms don't get a lot of support, but it's _pretty damn good_ for type support and it's keep from being a problem because _dragons_ don't get to benefit from it
also, wyrms seem to have a lot more of a focus on grave manipulation and banishing, which may not _sound_ like the case because of what decks are prominent between the types, but wyrms have quite a bit of support and a decent chunk of their archetypes based around it, whereas dragons only really have chaos dragons and dragon rulers with little leaking out of those areas. there's also the theme of self-destruction, which is actually pretty interesting with how few prominent pendulum wyrms there are ( which itself is its own kind of interesting, given the type debuted in the arc-v era )
oh, and there's also the whole theme of using dragons _and_ wyrms, most prominent with dracocension. i think there's actually a really interesting archetype concept there, since the actual relationship between the types has been kinda stuck behind generic support nobody uses

I figured it was mainly an excuse for Konami to print even more dragons without worrying about oversaturating the type.

There's a joke in Seven in the episode, where Asana (wyrm user) duels for the first time. Seeing design of her monsters, main co assume they are dragons and ask Luke (dragon user) what he thinks. He corrects them saying it's not dragons, but wyrms. Everyone then asks what's the difference and he replies: "No idea" with dead serious face.

And as far as it's relatively scarcity, I actually DO think it's just down to the newness of the type. Yes it's not the newest, but it's the 2nd newest after Cyberse. And Cyberse was SO heavily promoted as a new type (being closely associated with the Vrains anime and Link summoning in general) that it's only natural that the number of Cyberse cards quickly surpassed the number of Wyrms.

The entire reason for Wyrms existing is because Konami wanted to keep making dragons, without making dragons.
The game is already dominated by dragons, and sometimes it's hard to do something new and interesting with them without making it overpowered by giving them access to dragon support.
The wyrm type exists purely as a game balancing mechanic.

I think the main reason for the random inclusion of "Wyrm" as a type in YGO is bc they kept wanting to print cool dragons and dragon support cards but doing so would break the game since they're so bountiful, so they handicapped the type by separating certain potential dragons into Wyrms instead.

    • @Zetact_
      @Zetact_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Ramsey276one Here I go, I will go by the listed ones given by attribute.
      EARTH
      Winged-Beast
Easy, an archetype of what are long-legged, generally terrestrial birds. Ostriches, Secretary Birds, Flamingos, etc. With the secretary bird, we can connect this to a secondary theme, and make it an archetype of "business birds" which further emphasizes why they're Earth - they spend most of their time in the office.
      Fish
      Desert sharks!
      Sea-Serpent
Sea Serpent is tough in general because it's so vaguely defined, but I think it could be done. There's a mythological Scottish monster known as the Nuckelavee, that dashes out of the ocean and causes drought. So let's say that the theme of the archetype is that we look at supernatural creatures from the British isles, like the Selkie, the Glaistig, the Pooka, etc. and they cause drought.
      Pyro
First thought is "magma," but one might consider that to be more like a FIRE Rock-Attribute. However, magma is something that is more "earthy" and when I get to FIRE Rock, I think there's another very good concept to work with. So, the EARTH Pyro archetype is a bunch of magma creatures. Lava Golem is a FIRE Fiend but I'm thinking something similar to that. A possible gimmick that I think could be neat is if they worked like anime Carboneddon and had GY effects that activated if a certain number of cards in the GY were "above" them - the idea being similar to the GY being a "volcano" and they burst out of it when pressure has built up.
      WIND
      Reptile
Plenty of lizards who could be made into air-themed but I say we go with the central idea of the entire archetype being frilled lizards. They're lizard kites, with their frills being extravagant and colorful. As an aside, for some reason Balloon Lizard is EARTH attribute.
      Rock
I'm going to take inspiration from two similar archetypes here. The first is Aroma - their Aroma Jar is a WIND Rock type, and so the idea I'd go for is that the archetype is based on minerals being used to make scents. The first thing that comes to mind on that note, of fragrant minerals, is smelling salts - which are associated with athletes. We already have both boxing and sports archetypes, but how about an archetype of GOLEM athletes? They could be based on different fragrant minerals, and they'd have floating effects since when they get destroyed they leave behind their scent.
      Pyro
There is no point of reference for what sort of monster would be a WIND Pyro, so I decide to look to folklore. I'm thinking of the Djinn of the Middle East - now, we have a few genies in the game and they aren't Pyro type, nor are they WIND attribute, but in the original sources, jinn are said to be spirits of both fire and air - and a WIND Pyro would capture that perfectly. If we're going for a more accurate set of Djinn, they would not be inherently good or evil, so having "morally neutral" types instead of Fairy, Fiend, LIGHT, DARK (etc.) makes more sense.
      Fiend
Diskblade Rider is the card I'd look to as the primary inspiration for this one. Demonic motorcycle gang. I thought it was neat that in some of the video games, you could go up in a tag duel against him and Chaosrider Gustaph (who is a warrior instead of a fiend for some reason) and they both had decks filled with Traps/Spells respectively. Fiend motorcyclists, with a Spell and Trap lineup to support them, and they banish cards from the GY to get boosts.
      Zombie
Honestly, I think it's a little weird how despite being one of the most famous monsters in Japanese lore that tengu are so underrepresented in Yugioh. The ones we have vary in type from Winged Beast to Beast-Warrior to Fiend but there are a couple in Mayakashi. Here's a way we can make them Zombie-type: Tengu used to be associated with war, but that association has faded. Let's make this archetype be the spirits of these older tengu who died in the wars.
      FIRE
      Thunder
Not that tough, honestly it's weird that only one monster of this combination exists and it's a Magikey. Thunder represents electricity, so how do we get it on fire? Live wires, I'd say. Let's make it an archetype of goofy electricians, but, like, really incompetent ones. They're FIRE attribute because they constantly get into accidents and cause fire hazards, and they get fired.
      Aqua
This one already exists in Suship.
      Fish
We really could just make it an archetype of fish who are on fire, and their fire is so powerful that it even burns underwater. Sometimes, simple works. Maybe their archetype gimmick is that they play around negation?
      Insect
I'm leaning towards army ants, but, like, a literal army. Technically we have tended to place military-themed cards in EARTH, but not if we choose to make them fire ants.
      Beast
This one is almost too vague, "take animals and put them on fire," technically it has already been done with stuff like Fire Fist. You can really do anything you want with the archetype as long as they're Beastly and also on fire.
      Rock
I mentioned in EARTH Pyro that magma comes to mind for this combination.... But how about METEORS?
      WATER
      Pyro
Here we're in completely unknown territory since we're dealing with the "diametrically opposed" combination. But, let's give it a little leeway - Suship also was given leeway. How about oil monsters? They aren't Aqua-type since they are on fire, but they aren't FIRE attribute because their bodies are liquid? Alternatively, we could make them not oil but they could be, dudes who oil up their bodies and then light themselves on fire, inspired by Turkish Oil Wrestling but way more hardcore. So they are less liquidy.
      Insect
Lots of aquatic insects, it's a bit weird that they're so uncommon as it is. Let's follow Pokemon's cue and make the insects have a sort of "alien" look to them, where they encase themselves in bubbles like space suits.
      Fiend
Plunder Patroll does it, but I suppose we can say that they include non-WATER so they don't count. Ice demons are something that could easily be an archetype. As an aside, in Dante's Inferno, the deepest circle of Hell is actually portrayed as extremely cold.
      Zombie
This is going to get WEIRD, but I would say make them an archetype based on CLASSIC POETRY. Why? Well, there's a lot of references that could be made here, to poems by people like Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Bronte... Robert FROST. Why are they Zombie type? They're ghost writers!
      LIGHT
      Fish
I kind of enjoy the lore that Yugioh has extremely rare fish that are very desirable that people would risk their lives to get them, such as Terrorking Salmon and Seven Colored Fish (though they seem to have domesticated Seven Colored Fish if they can sell it in the market). Let's make that concept into an archetype, perhaps the fish are literally adorned with precious metals.
      Sea-Serpent
So, you know Abyss Dweller? It's an aquatic dragon with bioluminescence. Well, technically Abyss Dweller is still a WATER attribute, but that's the idea I'd go with for a LIGHT Sea Serpent archetype. They live deep in the ocean and are based on horrific monsters that are vaguely draconic, they are LIGHT because of their glowing bodies.
      Zombie
Technically this is Eldlich but the archetype is one monster and a bunch of Trap Monsters. I'd count it.
      Pyro
The only real LIGHT Pyro we have is the Helios series. But that gives a perfectly good idea to work with: stars. And this gives a springboard: there are a classification of stars that are dwarf stars. Dwarves, in Norse mythology, are the greatest of blacksmiths. Meteors were associated with amazing weapons in ancient history because they could house very pure iron. Yep, this is fitting together in an EXTREMELY satisfying manner.
      Aqua
Jellyfish are Aqua-type, and often sting so you can make electric jellyfish.
      DARK
      Aqua
There's the obscure, very bad monster Mucus Yolk that is a DARK Aqua and the design is that it's a bacteria. I say make an entire archetype of this type, oriented around Traps. Specifically, they will support the Virus cards - similar to Traptrix, they will search and recur your viruses, and I'd say give them a field spell that negates the effects of monsters in the GY while a Virus effect is lingering as their gimmick.
      Fish
Do something involving eels. They're aquatic predators and stealthy, they can be made DARK. How about for fun we make it a "whip" archetype, where it's actually a bunch of people using eels as weapons? Or, that gives a better idea - an archetype of fish-themed assassins. You could have an eel, a puffer fish, an angler, a marlin etc.

Something I think I might add - Your observations on Thunder being a "type incarnation" are semi-correct, if misled. Yu-Gi-Oh! originally had *_11_* Attributes as opposed to its current 7, with those 4 not making the cut being the natural types of Forest and Thunder, and the magical types of Demon and Illusion. Forest was largely repackaged into Earth, Thunder into Light and Demon into Dark - Illusion being the outlier with its members somewhat evenly split between the Light and Dark attributes. I find it a shame, personally, as had these Attributes not been cut the most common, thus most dominant, thus most overpowered and overpopulated 3 types would have had a lot more variety to them. 11 Attributes struck a much nicer balance with how broad each category was - but actually what contributes arguably more to that than anything is the complete lack of any "Neutral" attribute. Imagine if every colourless card in Magic had been forced into a section of the color pie - it'd lead to some pretty ineligant results, and also cut out some design space creativity. The same is true here in Yu-Gi-Oh!, where everything that has no apparent elemental alignment gets dropped into Earth predominantly, and sometimes Light or Dark, leading to EVEN FURTHER type oversaturation.

It really just feels like they made too many monster types in the beginning and just can't quite bring themselves to remove some entirely. About a third of them feel redundant and the less-used ones are often full of monsters that look like they belong in completely different types. Sea serpent should really just be split up between fish, dragon, or aqua for example. Beast and Winged Beast really don't feel like they need separated at all and could just use the elemental attributes for the distinction. Wyrm feels like it exists because you can only print so much dragon support before it reaches critical mass and you have to ban hundreds of cards because there's just too many interactions that could allow for first-turn kills. Cyberse just feels odd because it all feels like it belongs under machine more than the actual machines tend to.

    Fire Kraken was Fire Aqua
And there is a Gemini Crab that is a Fire Aqua
And how i discovered this is because Gunkan Suships were Fire Aquas
    And looking back,
We couldve have a Fire Fish, with the Kraken and Crab, but alas they are Aquas, (which are Fire)

Wyrm type basically represents the oriental viewpoint of dragon like creatures. For examples, yangzing, vw, swordsouls and tenyi are all inspired by chinese or japanese folklores, depicted as the manifestation of nature rather than those fire-breathing magic creatures we commonly see.

    • @polaroideternalhaven8671
      @polaroideternalhaven8671 2 ปีที่แล้ว

While this is true the main hypothesized reason of wyrm’s existence was to explore this while not making dragons and dragon related monsters too strong by giving it more support as dragons are undeniably one of the strongest supported archetypes. That is why most new dragon support cards are rare and archetype specific.

i know everyone talking about wyrms being the "dragons too good" type, but, with illusion being added soon id like to see more offshoot typing. like make phsycics more intune with machine support. fish and aqua are part of the same also and we have beast warrior and warrior and beasts all together already also .

really loving the usage when talking about warrior, and the "warrior class of dungeon and dragons." fighter, your thinking of fighter, the page you pull up is a final fantasy 14 homebrew, whitch in and of itself has "warrior" as a fairly long running class.

Really cool and insightful video, not something I was expecting tbh, also I'd like to add that as some people have already pointed out, a lot of types are created specifically just so other types aren't extremely overpowered while having the possibility of expanding the horizons of both archetypes and mechanics in yugioh. If all cyberse or psychic monsters were machines, machines would have been extremely overpowered maybe even close to dragon or warrior. There's also the fact that sometimes they'll have to make certain cards that would seem obvious in both type and attribute an odd mix between the two just so a certain archetype doesn't have an extremely overpowered card, an example of this would be mermail abyssteus, the best mermail support printed at that type be an aqua monster instead of a sea serpent to neuter the deck's synergy with Atlanteans. This can happen with text too, where they'll purposefuly make a card have a different name from the archetype so it's not as easily searchable or overpowered, another example being Luna Light Perfume in the lunalight archetype.

This is amazing! However, in data visualization there is almost no scenario where you want to use pie chart over a simple bar chart. Human mind is not made to deal with area and angle comparison easily, thus viewers will have difficulties to see if one attribute has more monsters than another if the difference is small and they need to read the numbers

I think there's some potential for a "Lava Fish" archetype of Fire attribute Fish monsters. Like all their artwork shows them swimming in a volcano or something.

When I clicked the video, I was prepared to hear another sad story about Skull Dog Marron. Was not expecting such a detailed video about card types - great work!
PS: Just imagine a Fish type based archetype about oceanic creatures living either in a sea of lava or in a underwater city with floating rivers of magma. It would make such an unique and interesting concept!

I actually like this video. Trivial or not. The literal conclusion is funny since the day i heard of golden flying fish, and how nice its effect actually is, i always wanted to make a deck with it, but there are no other light attribute fish monsters. At the same time, Fish types heavily rely on their attribute as well, so golden flying fish was really hard to incorporate in fish reliant decks due to having 1700 atk and NON-WATER. The idea instantly fell under as a result despite having such a powerful effect.

I love how there is only one FIRE Sea Serpent. It’s like they printed Lavalval Chain, assumed all other cards with that combination would be broken, and said “Never again”.

Watching this made me think of the 4 archetypes I made when I was in my young teens. The first one I made was for my brother, which was a mess of types and attributes forming a beatdown strategy with the common theme that they were fighters from across the timeline that were pulled through portals to fight together. The second was initially also for my brother but I claimed them as mine later; it was a mess of types with the dark attribute that all had effects that allowed them to attack their owner directly to grant massive effects and it's the one I'm most proud of. Next was an antogonist archetype to my first one, where it was a series of fiend type monsters with various attributes that were also pulled through time, except they were forced to work together by their tyrant boss card and relied on destroying enemy monsters to feed off of their corpses. The final was an antogonist archetype to the second archetype that used a strong toolbox of lockdown mechanics from mostly sea-serpents of various attributes to drown them
Now I have the urge to recreate them for a few reasons. Firstly, the first archetype could have all of it's typing mess cleaned up now that I remember that Beast-Warrior is actually a type. Second, a lot of the cards I use are archtype-specific reflavourings of pre-existing cards, such as "X Piece Golem"s, "Double Cyclone", and "Magic Cylinder". Limiting myself to 20-30 cards per archetype instead of 70+ could really help to highlight the most important cards and strategies. Third, I feel like the cards are far too splashable if they were real - most of the monster cards from my last deck would be banned if they really existed because they're floodgates that completely stop specific actions with easy methods of recovering them. I'm quite excited to see how I fix these
Have you ever made your own fake archetype? What was it like? Does it follow the trends of official card in type and attribute?
