Saying that black girls enjoying luxury is “trying to be white” is nonsensical. I’m Nigerian and we have been enjoying the luxury lifestyle. And yes that term or idea of “soft life” is used widely in Nigeria. They call it baby girl life. It doesn’t necessarily mean “luxury”. It’s more so enjoying a stress free life. Let people enjoy their lives and post what they want. If you don’t like it, then move on to content that makes you happy 😊. Thanks Kate for this video. You look amazing and keep those unboxings coming!!!

Another Nigerian and this is how my mother and her mother have lived. My mother has been wearing luxury items for as long as I remember her. Some Americans really need to reevaluate everything they believe about blackness and whiteness. Or they need to coin a new terms such as “American whiteness”, and “American blackness.”

I've come to the conclusion that some people are committed to misery. They politicize everything, they have a negative take on even the most positive, wholesome content, and I ignore those people. I love seeing black women happy, living softly, enjoying luxury, and being in their era of joy.

I was having this discussion with a friend this morning.
How people are celebrating the houses that were burned down in Los Angeles because they believe those houses belong to rich people and they are in their eat the rich moment. It's so insane how people would just rather be miserable.
It's so insane how they'd try to politicise everything instead of just being haters with their full chest.

It’s disheartening to see Black women being boxed into the notion that embracing luxury, being thin, or dating outside our race equates to self-hate or trying to be “white.” We live in America, a society where we're all exposed to diverse experiences, and we are not a monolith. As Black women, we have varied preferences, interests, and expressions of who we are, and none of those should define or diminish our Blackness.
No two people are exactly alike. Just because my lived experience may differ from someone else’s doesn’t make me any less of a Black woman, nor does it mean I hate myself. If I choose to straighten my hair, wear Louis Vuitton, maintain a slender figure, travel the world, or be in a relationship with a man who happens to be white, my love for myself and my Black identity is not diminished. I can fully embrace all these things and still love who I am - and I do.
I remember being called an “oreo” at 6 years old in the '70s. I didn’t understand the term, but I certainly wasn’t trying to be “white.” I was simply being myself. This kind of thinking - that one must conform to a certain image of what it means to be a Black woman - is not only hurtful, it's outright foolish. We need to stop this divisiveness and accept the richness of who we are as individuals.

This reminds me a bit of a comment I heard as a child. I grew up living below the poverty line, as did most of my close family members. When the Cosby Show ended, I heard my aunt and some friends discussing why it ended, as all of our families watched it faithfully. My aunt said having a black doctor and black attorney married and living together was unrealistic and most people probably didn’t believe its authenticity. Although I’d had t seen enough to dispute her claim, and most of her friends agreed with her, those comments never sat well with me.
Claiming that financial success, thinness, luxury, etc are things that portray “whiteness” does more harm to the psyches of black people than embracing those things. We deserve those things, too, and have been enjoying them for a very long time. It’s not new. We have to stop pigeonholing black people into this struggle/fight the power/high stress life category. We are so much more.

Ppl not liking “Black Girl Luxury” is just another way of humbling black women. Luxury does not equal white. And poverty/struggle does not equal black. Alot of people can’t see past their own reality and mediocrity. They speak from a poverty mindset. If something is unattainable for them they assume that should be the case for other women that look like them as well. Then the whole “wanting to be white” thing is crazy. Especially considering we were the ones that civilized “them”. It was Melanated ppl who introduced luxury to Europe by bringing in spices, fine fabrics, jewels and SOAP. (Those are just the TANGIBLES) This conversation is always led by someone reeking of ignorance, jealousy, and anti-blackness. They say a few big words and throw the words “capitalism” and “patriarchy”around to villainize these women. Yet they’re wearing an attire outfit from SHEIN.

One million percent agree with this . I'm tired of grown ass Black women talking about "acting white" as if they are still in junior high. Which is when I first heard it. Black women policing Black women, demanding that they act "Black enough" . Or like they have some feigned authority to deem another Black woman as "not acting Black" is pathetic and emotional immature. It is not like I take this beautiful Black skin off at the end of the day. It's not a suit. So I will ALWAYS remain "Black enough"! No matter how much luxury I choose to buy or how I move through this world.

I feel this as a woc. I often dream about luxury and being rich as a way of healing from racial trauma and not fitting in. And I often wonder how it would be to let my hair down and just be me without needing to aim for exceptionality. I could be the girl with messy hair, an awkward personality and still be likeable and popular. I could exist being myself without needing to worry about perceptions. I was friends with a black male artist online but we lost contact now. One of his art pieces had a very interesting theme. He painted black men in very ordinary spaces just doing everyday activities like watering the plants etc. And he wanted to depict the idea of just having comfort in normalcy without feeling the need of aiming for exceptionality. And it made think a lot about how many of us who have suffered some kind of trauma use fantasies of luxury as a quick band aid to cover up the negativity we are tired of facing.

KATE! Loved this video - I have so many thoughts
    1. Making content around luxury was always hard for me because I didn't take seriously that people viewed luxury as a 'lifestyle' to aspire towards. When I made my videos, they truly were about best practices and how to make the items you wanted attainable. I truly wasn't grasping that this was presented as a part of a broader lifestyle (the travel, the restaurants, the jewelry etc). For me, it was just only 100% about finding items in styles that I liked, and then getting them. And I was *exhausted* by the amount of people trying to extrapolate things any further than that...
    2. Black women are not a monolith. And lumping us all in as one amorphous blob further contributes to our de-humanization. We are all individuals with specific and unique traits, tastes, and desires. Of course, there can be similarity and kinship on a variety of subjects - but saying that one type of consumerism
    3. I'm super weary of lifestyles and values that are being pushed as aspirational bc low its just marketing to get us to consume more or fall in line with some type of ideology. Which is why it was always healthier IMO to just stick to the substance and talk about the products....HOWEVER, I also think that some of this content falls in-line with the "trad-wife" and conservative anti-feminist content that's being pushed to a different cohort...and we NEED to be skeptical of it.
All in all, we should try to live our lives in a way that pleases us and makes us feel fulfilled. And to that point I've gotten out of luxury entirely bc I'm just not fulfilled by it anymore. I have things that I love, but they are just things, and they do not serve any larger or more abstract purpose for me beyond the surface.
...I want to talk about all of this so much more , but I guess I would have to start making videos again to truly be able to put my thoughts together cohesively. Great video topic as always, it's great to hear your perspectives!!

The funny part about the whole “they wouldn’t want you wearing it” trope is, those same people have brands all over their home made by non black people as well. So, I’d ask them the same thing. Would they want you having their electronics, furniture and decor in your home? Or does that just apply to the non black people that make luxury brands? It’s simply not enough black made products in the world. Does that mean black people shouldn’t be able to enjoy nice things? No it doesn’t mean that and don’t allow them to tell you it does.

Your tomorrow isnt guaranteed so why worry what strangers think of you ? Let these people be miserable if they want to but you don't have to limit your freedom because of how others may view you. My opinion is black girl luxury is good, but a lot of creators are just promoting overspending on designer trinkets. Plus the prices have gone up on these trinkets and the quality has gone down. I do love seeing the travels, the high end restaurants, spa days and enjoying a luxurious home. Even the aesthetic home cooked meals and self care I love. But unboxings are tired

I’m all in for Black Girl Luxury content. I respect the opinions of those who have criticism and honesty, there are parts I don’t vibe with either. But generally I love it. It seems those critiques focus on some narrow creators. I follow black girls in luxury of all body types, hair styles, fashion sense, sexual orientation, etc. some of the critiques tells me people are approaching this with their conclusions pre set without actually looking at the diversity in the black girl luxury community.

    I really enjoyed this video!
Unfortunately, there’s extremes on both sides. Although I agree that some black women overdo it with the black girl Luxury discussion by associating themselves with whiteness as a means to escape the negative perception they have of blackness, taking on harmful dating/SW advise or viewing white men as their ticket out of poverty. I also think some black women heavily identify with struggle, and believe they have no purpose outside of being the face of social justice. They operate from a space of lack and low self esteem. I feel those that pushback against Black girl Luxury, don’t recognise that their viewpoints are rooted in anti-blackness, and perpetuate this idea that as black people we cannot enjoy the luxuries of life without somehow betraying and forgoing our black identity.

We all should be aspiring to be our healthiest selves, and beautifying ourselves the best we can no matter where our income status is. The women of the 20s and 50s-60s somehow looked fabulous on average with an average income and no fast fashion/ "Buy-now" ordering. Surely we can do the same too!

Great video! I just discovered your channel and immediately subscribed.
I think people are either used to seeing Black women struggle or don't want Black women to live a soft & stress-free life with nice things because it disrupts their negative beliefs of Black woman.
Black women who don't like the Black girl luxury either have internalized that Black women should struggle and don't deserve rest, or they never seen a Black woman live the luxury life in their real lives.
So there is no winning. But, it's not our business of what others think of us and what we deserve.
I live an expat life, done say it's a privilege, by no means is it a luxury lifestyle, but since it's so rare to see a woman like me not only travel the workd but live as an expat & businesswoman, in many spaces people like to question or interrogate me (especially White American women), and I used to get triggered. But now I understand, some people just aren't used to seeing a Black woman live the expat lifestyle (especially without a husband).
I just smile and go about living my best life.
I look forward to watching more of your content ❤

Great video Kate. Because of social media, everything has a label. “Blacks and luxury” is nothing new. I grew up in the North, whites and blacks were wealthy/affluent in various area codes since as long as I have been on this earth, and I’m no spring chicken. Being ‘thin’ was not an aesthetic, it was natural for us. We grew up thin because our generation played outdoors for hours each day, walked everywhere, engaged in sports for recreation. Social media sucks the life out of all things enjoyable! I feel bad for this generation, the one before, and future generations. Kate I love your luxury content, keep it up. I can tell it’s what you enjoy. And we enjoy it with you! And congratulations on your nuptials! You are a gorgeous couple. I love to see it. Oh by the way, did you see Jerusha’s latest tag. I’m not normally watching luxury content. For a while a lot of my consumed content was around perfumes and then beauty secondary and books next
I think black women are an easy target. It’s easy to burden them with seeing and critiquing all of the world’s problems. Black women do deserve escapism and role models that embody more than being strong and resilient
That said when we’re talking about online content black luxury does have a usual aesthetic whether intentional or not. I have a Jamaican background and colour is much more emphasized and for some reason luxury content online feels like a dog whistle. Straight hair, skinny, capsule wardrobe that focuses on office wear even if you never go to the office, cool or neutral aesthetics
Meanwhile Solange and tracee Ellis Ross are just as much black and rich but not nearly highlighted as icons or inspiration within the black and luxury movement
I think it’s a movement that deserves critique like any other but it’s also not hard for it to be lumped into sprinkle sprinkle content or other things when it’s all vibes and price tags and doesn’t have a distinct voice (as an outsider)

I wear my natural coils often on my channel as well as my hair blown out for just this purpose. I also wear my own hoodies as well as higher end clothing. I think people lump everything into a race problem when the word that they’re really looking for falls more under classism. As someone that really tried to deconstruct my elite upbringing, this is more of my issue with the black girl luxury movement is that it kind of virtue signals through status and I do think that every day black girls need representation too that isn’t like into an E Kane. I also think The climate around aspirational wealth is starting to shift obviously it’s slower in the black community, but with the divide between left leaning and more conservative Black people becoming more apparent each day, this doesn’t surprise me and the black girl luxury fits right into that timeframe. I personally love, enjoying this content in doses. But I do think that people that live this lifestyle or enjoy this type of content do you need to ask themselves? Why do you enjoy this luxury? What about this is doing something for you and what levels is it doing it on I don’t think most black women would say it’s because they’re trying to be white. Great video! I loved your format. It took me a while to truly understand that others see Black women as _mules_ and _human shields_ who are supposed to fight for all _their_ issues while we suffer in silence & largely fight for Black women & girls interests _alone._ I've totally changed my thinking. I no longer put the interests of anybody else - _especially_ any group of _males_ - above the interests of myself and those who most share my likeness, which are Black women & girls.
It's very freeing, if unusual, b/c Black women are taught to sacrifice ourselves and _put everyone else in society before ourselves_ & we are heavily shamed & even _harassed_ when we don't. Now when I look at any situation, one of the first things I ask myself "How does this effect Black women & girls?" If the cons outweigh the pros for Black women & girls, I'll _unapologetically_ oppose it. 😒

My issue with luxury context in general, and black girl luxury, is the level of consumerism that it promotes, is often built on lies from living beyond their means, and it is unsustainable, environmentally and financially. It also retrenches classism which is very closely aligned with fatphobia, colorism, and moving towards religiousity (see: Mormon soft life/trad wife social media content). I know many just want to see black women "living their best life" and "it's just entertainment", but none of this is apolitical or happens in a vacuum. Its dishonest to say that soft life isn't immulating white people when its them that's who decides what is considered luxurious, what is in style or desirable, and almost all of the luxury houses are white owned. Nobody seems to be asking why does the ability to purchase luxury goods emblematic of soft life given the amount of work you have to do to be able to afford it? When and how is soft life/luxury era reconciled with the degradation of other women of color around the world? When women can't afford luxury items and buy dupes that are eventually dumped in various communities around Africa as trash, then what? Why does having a soft life seem to mainly revolve around consumerism? And for women that can't afford these items, are they not deserving of having a soft life? In todays economy, I do think the online luxury community will have a reckoning soon and it is long overdue. It is perfectly fine to want nice things without engaging in intellectual dishonesty or being divorced from political or economic reality. The easiest person we lie to is ourselves.

I love black girl luxury ❤, not just for the aesthetics (which I do love) but also for the self care aspect. Black women have been through enough; I don’t see the problem in taking care of and treating yourself to the finer things in life, if you can afford it. Furthermore, black women can do and be whatever makes them happy. Life is for us to live it, and there is enough struggle and pain in the world, so if being a luxurious black girl makes me happy, then I’m going to do it. Everyone should just do what makes them happy and not worry about what the other person is doing 😊. Have a blessed day you all.
