The second part of my Grimdark Painting Fundamentals Series is another introduction video where I will be discussing the basics of the reductive technique that I heavily use in my version of the Grimdark painting style. The main topic in this video will be on the usage of Acrylic Inks/Washes and Enamel Products. (mostly acrylics)

Really opened my eyes to what is possible in painting. Gotten very tired of the 'Eavy metal look most painters go for. This is some next level stuff in terms of getting the right (in my opinion) atmosphere for the grim dark setting of 40k.

Hey, mate. Just started following you. I've been a normal acrylic painter for years, but you are inspiring me to do my Grey Knights in this style. I know you've already moved on from this series. However, what makes grimdark so grim (and dark) is the juxtapositions you can create with stories. Sisters of Battle - seemingly innocent purists in this harsh world is a great story. That's why I'd love to see you do St. Celestine in this style.

Way to excited to try this out. Do washes made of paint act the same as washes made of inks? Or is it just inks that lend themselves to coming off with alcohol (in an artistically appealing way, like do paint washes clump up or something)
As far as models anything eldar or dark eldar, as both are slick but would look cool darkened up. Striking scorpions or banshees
My favorite miniatures that you’ve done are the troops with a simple pallet that gets crazy interesting with mottling and different washes

as far as end tutorial models go, I personally think it would be incredibly useful to do a vehicle, a monster/fleshy thing, a power armored guy, and a xenos guy or normal human. It would show us essentially the full gamut of varieties of broad categories you can use this stuff to paint, and also give you a space marine to draw in more views.

Hands down best Grimdark guides out there! Very much appreciated! Can someone tell me if I have this straight, from the oil wash/nuln part, on the cue tip mineral spirits reduces the oil and then you switch to your alcohol to reduce the acrylic?

Zatcasagoon. Can you do a grimdark "Destroyers" infantary?
The models that really gave the middle finger to the Geneva Convention ethic?
They're the ones who played with caustic chem-munitions, poison gases, and radioactive weapons.
    They sound grimdark enough.

good day sir. I love the video and checked out your website and a lot of your videos. Now I am super hyped to try this out, cause I've been struggling with the gw style of painting a lot and honestly, your minis look way cooler and all the tecniques look more than doable. The minis look pretty much like the artwork in the old rulebooks and stuff. Really great man. Now I've been collecting Black Templars Space Marines for a while now, and I'd just LOVE it, if you did a tutorial on the Champion of the Emperor, cause it's my favourite GW mini by far and I'd like to repaint mine in grim dark style.
I do have an airbrush (although it's not a super great one, It'll do) and all the thinner/mediums/alcohol stuff I might need. Except for paints (where I'd just like to use exactly yours from a possible tutorial video) do I need anything else specifically?

Very nice as usual. And again I've added a lot of this into my own mini painting as I like to bounce between extreme contrast and bright colours to a 'grimdark' look. I am eyeing up the new Adeptus Mechanicus 'mechanical horses' GW recently revealed. I think you could do something really special with those models. I'd love to see your technique on that archaic, steampunkish-tech. :)

Given both your modelling and painting skills, I'd like to see if you can make the Taurox/Prime not look like a gw-bright tonka-truck bread box. There are good scion paint schemes out there but the taurox seems much less interesting

QUESTION: can you use oil paint and wash techniques over something that has been drybrushed? If not, what of you varnish first?

Hey men, I finally tried the streaking grime and the reductive tech. But the finish was supper glossy. I diluted the Streaking G. And immediately remove with the Qtip and more minerals. Do you think that was the mistake or maybe my mineral spirits are not good?
Already copied your oils weathering thecnics, sooo good! Thx for everything as soon as the crisis stabilize will go to your patreons

Dang, this series is awesome. Iliterally learned more about painting grimdark style from those 2 vids, than from gazilion other. Love the theory stuff, not just "take this, take that, do this, do that".
Whatever's the model on the last episode will be, it's gonna be awesome!

Firstly, thank you very much for this series! I have a question: I dont have an airbrush, so I thought if it was possible to "wash" the models I want to do grimdark style with a brush and remove it with a q tip with mineral spirits. I guess it wont look as clean as yours, but maybe even extra grimey when doing it with just a brush?

So you are saying you never varnish your figures? Is that because they are durable enough with the enamels on their or for some other reason? As for model: anything except a freakin' space marine.

    • @GrimdarkCompendium

Indeed I do not varnish the models. Handle them by the base!
