    Thank you so much for this video! It was a pain to unsolder the top board despite I used both suck&wick )) Installed ceramic cap and my old FT-2400H (1991!) sounds well now! 😊

      Which one helped more? The wick or the solder sucker?

    I have one of these mics and had to stop using it a few years ago because I was told the audio was too low. I'm going to see if this will solve my issue. Thank you.
    EDIT: This did fix the issue with mine. Thank you again!

      Oh yeah it'll fix it. Very common problem.

    Excellent! I have been trying to find out the reason for the low audio on my FT-5100, and came across your video. I measured the deviation with the mh-27 mike, and saw around 150 Hz. With 50 MV of 1 kHz audio injected in the mike connector, its 4.5 kHz, so the problem is definitely the mike. I just separated the boards in my mh-27 mike. It took a couple of hours using a plastic solder sucker, with several go arounds on each pin, with flux added to help the solder flow.. One trace on the back side of the pcb lifted. I can repair that with some wirewrap wire. A heated solder sucker is the right tool for this job. My advice to anyone attempting this is don't use solder wick.

    Did repair on FT-2500M and FT-2400. Both work impeccably. Thank you!

    Had this exact problem with my MH-27 mic. Followed your instructions and repaired the mic myself. It now works like a new one. Thank you so much.

    THANKS! I just found a NOS MH 27 and of course it had the famous low audio problem right out of the box. I followed your technique and the audio is now perfect. Best 73s

    Thanks for this. Having already peeked inside of mine, I didn't think I could handle the small sma parts. After seeing that the cap in question, isn't that tiny, I will tackle the job.

      Glad to know I helped. It totally fixed the problem. Now I have to be careful not to talk too close to the mic, it's much more sensitive.

      You'll do fine! It's more work to desolder the header pins.

    Thank you for a very detailed and informative video. I have just ordered the capacitor that is needed for this repair and will attempt the repair when the part arrives.

    Cool video. I fixed my MH-27 years ago with a very similar fix. I used a ceramic cap though, rather than another electrolytic.

    Yaesu FT-5100 MH-27 mic and having similar problems but replaced the cap and still having the same problem. Having a hum in the reduced audio, almost like there is a ground that not secured or something. Limited knowledge of the problem and electronics, but did replace the cap and no difference. Thanks for the info.

    Thanks for the video I have probably the same issue with mine. Question: what about the other capacitors? Isn"t recommendable to exchange these as well?

    I bought this same radio and mic on craigslist and it has this exact problem! So happy I found this fix. I want to replace all my capacitors as they all either are corroded or look suspicious. Do you know the values of the other caps?

    Looking for a good soldering iron. What wattage do you use for component work ?

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      40 watt should be good for circuit boards and components.

    Just got this mic with a FT-2500M myself and have to do this repair. I was curious why you didnt bother changing out the other 3 caps while you were in there.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Part availability primarily. One of the other caps passes audio from the DTMF pad. I'm not sure what the 3rd does, from memory.

    Is there a way to test if I have this problem on my same mic before I unsolder the pins? Where to test on accessable side of board and expected value

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the cap is failing on your mic, your transmitted audio will be very low, it will be obvious. You could also use an ESR meter to test the cap in circuit also.

      Kevin is correct. I repaired 2 mics and it’s unmistakable. Sounds like you’re speaking from another room.

    I've tried to desolder the pin headers using a solder sucker and solder wick. Having a hard time getting the pins clean enough to release board. any tips? thanks in advance

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're soldered on both sides of the board. It is a bit of a pain. I got lucky with a heated solder sucker and some solder wick on some of them as well. Don't heat for too long though, or you can end up lifting the pad off the board.

    • @championsp
      @championsp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some times adding a little flux to the solder wick will help...

    My mh 36c mic that replaced the mh27 has the opposite issue. Audio too loud and a hum the closer I get to the microphone element. Help!! Lol

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never seen the inside of one of those, but there might be a gain control. Or maybe a grounding issue causing the hum. Good luck
