  • For info on how to set up for drawing sight size from the flat, check out my other youtube videos.
This is how I draw a "cartoon" or preliminary drawing for a painting. I then transfer this drawing to the canvas. THE MORE TIME YOU SPEND AT THE BEGINNING BEING SLOW AND DELIBERATE AND CHECKING YOURSELF, the less time it will take overall. This video in real time took about 6 hours. This is about 4 times faster than real time.
If you are referencing this for bargue drawing - normally we would push the linear portion of this drawing further and then when we fill in the shadow shapes we fill them all the way in, and in one solid mass. I am being rough with my fill in because I get lazy at the end of drawing for 6 hours.
Real time about 2 hours (this is obviously sped up!)
    Process:
    - start with a single vertical plumb
    - begin with singular clear lines for large proportions and things that are easy to see
    - use straight lines
    - keep your pencil SHARP, sharpen often
    - STAY SIMPLE
    - constantly check yourself with measurements, alignments, etc
    - start to build additional marks off of the simplified double-checked marks
    - add additional information in stages, building up to complexity (we call this articulation)
    - max out what you can find with line
    - stay straight line-y and structural as long as possible
    - continue to correct and assess as you go
    - SLOW DOWN
    - when you have maxed out what you can do with line, filling in shadow shapes with a solid value can help you to see additional adjustments

Thanks for this. It firms something I've been avoiding and that is making a better drawing before I start painting

Great work Julie, thank you for this demo. How long did it take you to get this good ? what's your progression like ? can you show us a progression of your art from the time you started until now ? that would really be inspiring.

I trained for 6 years part time at ARA Boston. I would say I was capable of this after about 2 years or training. All of this was learned during bargue drawing. My work did evolve a lot! Not sure if there's are examples of old work on the internet somewhere but I'll look!

@@JulieBeck I dug deep, way deep, all the way back to 2007 and Julie, you’ve come a long way from those cotton candy trees and that bell 🔔 painting. If you made a progression video with a before and after, it would certainly go viral lol

    Why not just trace?

valid question! Doing a drawing doesn't just give me something to transfer. The actual purpose of the drawing is to establish familiarity with my subject, spaces, shapes, etc. When I go to paint, I will end up losing the drawing after the first layer, so the more familiar I am with it, the better I can retain the accurate drawing throughout the painting process. For me painting is a type of drawing. Sometimes I start "drawing" with paint on right on the canvas and refine with paint layers, but I can speed up the total process by doing a preliminary drawing. Tracing is great for saving time too but if you do not have a solid ability to draw, you will be worried about losing the tracing. Paint can often be hard to control. The confidence in the information and my ability to draw allows me a larger variety of edges from the start. Often people who trace fear losing the tracing because they do not have confidence in re-finding the drawing info., so edges stay very sharp (creates a flatter appearance).

also, this may sound odd, but my drawing of something is often more accurate than a tracing. Tracing is a passive experience and can easily get wonky if you're not actively staying on top of the drawing.
