A very interesting video Anthony! Lots to take in and I was surprised how dry your ground is!

Hi Anthony, just found your channel, it was a dry start here in central Victoria Australia but the Corellas damaged my oats whilst waiting for rain. The direct drilled crops are fairing much better. Hope you get some further rain.

@@AntonysRegen yes, I must make a pilgrimage there but be sure that they are an exception, not all of us own 3 D11's, I only had an International BTD8!

We’ve had similar problems although not as severe. It was our first go at dd oats, I think I drilled too deep in our quest for moisture and I should of applied slug pellets in the furrow. Slugs are grazing despite the very dry conditions.

If a spring crop failed for us we’d try maize (grain or forage) then follow with winter wheat. Far more profitable than a cover crop in my opinion

Others have found farm saved oats have had poor germ this year. Not sure what caused that to be a prob this season. Pleased I've started saving little jar samples to review if needed. Luckily I put 3kgs Ferric in the slot when I drilled my slug risk field (one away from the farm that you didn't get to see). In my humble opinion the first loss is the cheapest and I'd leave all until June before summer cover cropping it for 1st wheat if necessary. Very little rain for 6 weeks puts huge pressure on anything that went in in less than ideal conditions. Thanks for your honest summary.

What Slug pellets did you use? Since 1 April 2022 Metaldehyde has been banned for outdoor use.

    Good analysis

Perhaps spring beans drilled with the claydon could be an option? They can go very deep into moisture and seem to thrive on heavy ground.

Good point and we haven't grown then for a while either! Pity they don't work with low input spring cereal CSS option!
