    For those that don't know During the windows 11 OOBE(initial windows setup) if it does not find a network driver you can hit ctrl+shift+f3 and your computer will restart into audit mode. This brings windows into the admin account and allows you to use a usb drive to install any drivers needed to get through the initial setup..... This has been a game changer for me honestly in particular when putting windows on a VM.

    1:45 I would actually just leave XMP/EXPO settings alone until I have everything configured in Windows (updates, drivers, etc) as there's always a chance of XMP getting unstable and giving you headache for the first boot. Great video otherwise!

      Glad I'm not the only one thinking this during the video... was kinda surprised of hearing this from Greg, considering he usually is more safe than sorry and cautious of his tips. Especially considering his Fix or Flop series, one would think he would suggest taking the more safer route.

      Windows also has a habit of updating the BIOS if you don't change the update settings. XMP can reset if that happens. It doesn't always happen but it does happen.

    So a technically controlling the fan with BIOS would be lower level solution. Low level usually means closer to hardware and high level means more abstraction between the implementation and the hardware. I’m not going to get into whether you should use software or BIOS based fan control solutions because that’s personal preference and as long as you know the trade off you can make your own decision.

  • @Lockwood360
    @Lockwood360 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    I find with your fan setup they're more noticeable as they ramp up and down more often at the lower range. Setting it higher at first will keep them at a steady rate and likely be less noticeable for many. While keeping things a few degrees cooler which is always better. I'm a believer in having a good idle temp as well as gaming temp.

    Another tip: if you're dual booting between Linux and Windows (on two separate drives), make sure you install Windows first and then Linux. Many Linux distros use "os-prober" to detect Windows and will automatically add it to the bootloader (GRUB2 or SystemD). After Linux installs, go back into your BIOS and set your Linux drive first in your boot priority. This is crucial because the Windows Boot loader has a really bad habit of destroying the EFI partition on Linux drives, but GRUB2 and SystemD treats Windows with much more respect and will add Windows to the list of choices to boot to. Furthermore, your Linux distro will have a method to customize the bootloader further so that you can change the timeout value to 3 seconds instead of 5 and have it boot Windows automatically by default. At this point, you might be concerned about Secure Boot but once Windows 11 installs, it will boot with or without Secure Boot enabled. Fedora and OpenSuse also support Secure Boot but you're pretty much free to leave disabled but if you want to play Valorant, you'll want to enable it in your BIOS, save and exit, and then use your boot override hotkey to boot into Windows. Boot Override shouldn't harm your EFI partition on your Linux drive. Keyword: shouldn't.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah. Thanks for your videos, and your natural "unscripted" style approach to each situation. Which inspired me to "take the plunge" into creating my (first ever) TH-cam channel. I know it'll improve with time, but in my channel, I talk about computer components and try to build "budget friendly" powerful machines and gamer's upgrades. I'm also a casual gamer on Twitch (by the time of this recording. LOL). Question: Is it possible for me to reference you in some of my videos when appropriate? Your content is very informative, and your approach is what the audience is looking for. INMO. Thanks again.

    It might just be me, but I always had wildly different reactions to XMP. Be it Fans/Temps or voltage stability, it was never just a free upgrade, like it's supposed to be.
    Also small nitpick that doesn't matter for the video: With GPT and UEFI in play, you technically no longer "boot into a partition" from firmware, all bootloaders share an ESP partition on the drive and you select which one you want. Though there is an ESP for each bootable drive.

    Advanced fix : Play with voltages (soc,...)

    Good list, but I don't agree with everything. Here are my takes (of course, feel free to criticize):
    Always set your fan curves to their minimum speeds, or something like 10% in BIOS. You're not going to be doing anything demanding in BIOS.
    In Windows, use the software called FanControl. Unlike manufacturers apps, it's a small nice little utility to control your fans without all the bloat.
    High temps CAN happen, especially with AM5 Ryzen chips which are DESIGNED to run at 95C, unless you fix that.
    Don't run your fans at 100%. It's just going to (probably) reduce the fans life time, and more importantly, it's going to generate a ton of noise. If you tweak your fans properly, you'll see that at some point, increasing fan speed will increase noise by a lot and temps by very little. I usually just set fan max speed at whatever maximum noise I am comfortable with. Running max might save you 4-5C. Not worth it for the 3x+ more noise they generate. Then design a fan curve where the fans run at lower speeds at lower temps up to your max tolerable noise at high temps.
    Add to that, don't run pumps at full speed. They, too, generate noise, especially high-pitched noise. Again, you're usually fine with running them at lower speeds with negligible impact on temps. So I would highly recommend that you either a) Just set all fans to the max tolerable noise or b) Make a fan curve from around 10-20% up to your max tolerable speeds. Going higher will net you very little with a ton of extra noise.
    You forgot to mention disabling memory training, especially for AM5 motherboards, where it can take 30-60s PER BOOT unless you disable memory training. It's just not acceptable in my opinion. Enable Memory Context Restore in BIOS.
    I would also suggest trying to undervolt your CPU and GPU, and lowering max power/frequency. They will consume less power and make less noise. Lowering your CPU max power/frequency, and sliding down the power target on your GPU might be a good idea. CPUs and GPUs these days consume a ton of power, which means they get hot, which means lots of noise, for very little performance gain. We might be talking about 5-10% extra gain depending on your settings. Your wallet or ears may thank you. On AMD platforms, this is easily done with Ryzen Master and Radeon Software.
    And don't forget--install ALL the drivers from your Motherboard manufacturers site (but maybe skip the SW).

I crammed a Godlike E-ATX Motherboard in the Zalman but couldn't stand that I couldn't see the temp readout through the mesh so I put it back in my $115 white Lian Li Lancool 216 RGB case, which has much better quality than the Zalman. The dust filters are a nice touch in the Zalman but they should've had magnets holding them on like the top filter instead of pieces of tape. The front dust filter on the Lancool 216 is magnetized but was a $13 option.

    The fan curve I have put on literally anything for as long as I have been able to goes like this. All fans at 50% until it hits 50c. Then it is 10% points higher then the temp. So, 60c is at 70%. 70c at 80%. 85c is when I do 100%. For cpu's and gpu's. Case fans. Takes testing Usually about 50-70% all times. But, it depends on what fans. Sizes. How many and so on.
    And Pro tip: If your going to have more then one computer in your name. Find a RETAIL license key. OEM ones (like his sponsor) are for a single computer. If your a dad like me and have kids, wife and Minecraft server, plus multiple of your own. A retail one works for all of them. And I mean ALL of them.

      I finally worked out it is a faulty board through IBB (prebuilt) but too late and not worth sending back for just 2 USBs. It detects something (shows up as unknown and Error 43) is there but stops it from being usable. So I use a hub now in back.

      "I turned up the speed to allow my DDR4 to run at what they said they should" If the ram should run on that memory speed then that would be it's base memory speed.. XMP is an overclock that not always works and it can cause weird freezes

      @johnt.848 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      In other words you overclocked the Memory. Overclocking voids the warranty unless bought with those specifications, it is NOT a cop out.

      @@belakiss1381 I get that, but the USBs did not work from the start. I thought it was because I had no 3.0s to use.
      IBB was great. They walked me through the overclocking and putting a new drive in about 4 months into having it.
      After about 6 months I went to the store because the new mouse did not work. They turned it on, said the PC broke because I changed the speed, and shut it down.
      When Best wouldn't help I went back to IBB and they tried to figure out the USBs. After undoing all the changes they walked me through initially it still didn't work, so concluded it was the board. Since it would take 2-3 months to get it back I just keep using a hub.

    XMP is never guaranteed to be stable, even if the kit is listed on the QVL. Need to stress test it afterward, at least a day of karhu and/or hci memtest, even occt would be good. I would rather tell people to run their ram stock than blindly enable xmp, the latter is a great way to later find them complaining on the steam forums about a game constantly crashing.

    Thank you all for making videos like this! They are much appreciated! Anyone who needs a full PC build guide, Linus Tech Tips did one not long ago that was the entire build process in First Person POV. I built my first PC early this year and it was extremely helpful throughout the times I got stumped.

      If this is the case, you can try manually setting RAM frequency lower than the rated value assuming your motherboard supports anything over base.

    Question to @gregsalazar would you be willing to help me out with small problem related to windows blue screen? I think it's the gpu driver is the root caused. i get code error 144. All gpu drivers are new clean install. IT's been annoying to deal with it. Normally i restart my pc twice if not 3-4 times to keep it from bluescreen when turning on or loading slowly into windows. I'm running nvme ssd 5000's mbps reads if i label it right. Maybe tech guy like you can see the problem i'm not seeing.

    Bios for fan control? Software is bad for this? Just say you don't want to promote Fan Control which is the best fan control software and it's free. If you don't support even these developers that are actually passionate about doing something good you don't deserve to give advice in this industry.
