I'm a Old G from NYC now living in Miami for the past 11 years. When this song came out it took the music scene by storm. It was so popular that alot of radio disc jockeys used it as their theme song....but the best I ever saw it being used was when I went to the planaturiam and I had smoked a joint before I went in...it was pitch black and the seats were design for you to lean back and look up because the ceiling is the screen...the solar system appeared and Kool and the Gang's Summer Madness started playing...WOW...what a mind blowing experience....the planets were revolving and the comets were shooting accross the wide ceiling...every time I hear this song, it reminds me of that experience...as long as I live, I'll never forget it..and I'm 68 as of April 16, 2016...I saw Kool and the Gang last month ( March 2016) at Jazz in the Garden here in Miami and they played this tune...Still sounded great....
That is a great anecdote, love that. I was on beach in the UK (yeah, it can get warm here -(!) and I first heard this as the sun was setting, being played on a fella's stereo as the sun was going down and the sea had that glazing look about it. I was only 10 and I always remember it. Such a tune, it IS the summer.
There used to be a time when you knew it 1200pm. In Detroit on the radio station WJLB. They would play this song so that all the factory workers knew half the day was done. All we needed next was some Earth Wind and Fire to take us to quitting time. I remember this like it was yesterday...working at the Detroit - Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
Welcome to the second hour of Pillowtalk. This was a late night show hosted by Allen Almond on WNIC 100.3 FM. This show would wrap-up every night at mid-night. My girlfriend (who became my wife) and I would listen to his show dreaming and enjoy each other’s company. After we were married and had kids. My wife called his show and had Mr. Almond say good-night to our kids on the air waves. It was a very hot night, the kids couldn’t sleep. All of the windows were open with the soft smooth jams playing through the house. Mr. Almond came on the air and said Good-Night to them in the way only he could. One of my favorite tunes…………. Lots of great memories attached to it………..
that's an awesome memory. one i wish i was old enough to experience. im 20 and i hear stories from old school cats like you guys and i truly think i was born in the wrong generation. i wonder if i can find reruns or tapes of pillowtalk. it makes me wonder what happened to our world that nice personal experiences like these don't hapeen anymore
John Gray this is brilliantly Nubian nation and kings and queens wooly African warrior blood pay the way American holiday thanksgiving day today soulful and groove songs and cultural heritage foundation for the people's choice.
I find it amazing how I grew up on Tupac, old-school west coast and NY hiphop, then ventured into indie metal, r&b, house, and now I'm coming to this stuff. This music makes me feel like my spirit is coming home. This is simply the greatest music I've ever heard.
You mean "DollChocolate." like Apocalypse...given me Cumcalulas...don't no how 2 spell "Arithmetic" but l no how 2 r.....a Bi*ch." no trick....no itch ...l also gotta hood kick."

It was in jazz music the "jazz fusion era" when electronics was really making new musical sounds, especially for guitars & keyboards! really was a cool time to be in !!!!!!!
listening to this song just puts u n another place n space, it's like having your mind free to do or imagine being or doing anything or one. like floating in space looking down at yourself n wondering "Dam, is this shit real".....
The chords are bm7 & c#m7 through the whole song, simple just two jazz chords & yet it is an instrumental jazz masterpiece still being played after 42 years since 1974 !!!!!
Peace to you Tanya and ALL I dedicate this to my MOM my BROTHER and my SIS I LOVE and MISS you ALL THANKS for giving me LOVE, KNOWLEDGE, CLASS and the FUNK

1stSaintsFan Oh yeah, I remember that--he played this as the last tune on his show every night at midnight----I used to listen to Almond's show as a teen back in the day on summer nights and that's how I got to really appreciate and love this tune-----I was surprised to find out that it was by Kill and the Gang, because it was an instrumental. I also recall Almond being briefly on the now-defunct WJZZ FM. 107.5 , which was a full-time jazz station until 1997, when the format suddenly switched to R&B/hip-hop. He was only on there for a minute,though----don't know why, as it seemed like his smooth style was a good fit for the format.

Whoever said that time travel isn't possible wasn't using music as the venue. In 1974, I was a really young teen in a music store on Mission Blvd. in Hayward Ca. When I first heard this song I was checking out black light posters and there was the smell of Jasmine incense in the air.
This transported me back to my teenage years: Saturday picnics in the park. Dreamin' of a life we had not yet seen. To be able to go back to those carefree days would be wonderful. But this song takes me there.....
I hear you man, but keep this in mind: we can travel back and remember those halcyon days only because we live on. Every day is a gift, and with any luck we'll all be looking back on these days with the same fondness that we have for our youth...in about forty years :) God bless.

I’m 46, sitting at the kitchen table with my three year old son making sure he gets some of this classic music in his soul. Reminiscing about my upbringing, looking at him and thinking...”He’s gonna be alright”. I love my son.
Summer Madness brings me back in time in my mind, reliving the great times I had with high school girls and buddies,it's an awesome song that taps right into my soul and how real the wonderful way I felt the young love of life.
Virginia Grandy you can say that again! Oh hollup... Ya did actually post 2x girl!!! Ahahahahah (OMG I laughed such a high squeak it would fit right on in this song huh)
Thanks for that. I've never been in Detroit, but that memory sparked some of my own in San Jose, Calif. growing up. Life was surely different then. This is what America is made of. God Bless this country and our freedoms.
Oh Yeaaah!! Kool and the Gang another fine group of yesterday bringing so many memories when music was taken to even a higher level entertainment - Summer Madness! Cruisin music highway bound! and just plain chillin! Soothing to the soul!
This one beautiful song. It's really sensual. Just being together with your special person and listening to the music. Music nowadays...Nothing close to this.
What's love is that it's 2018 and you'll still hear this playing at every barbeque and family reunion in Chicago, LOL. 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's and beyond! Peace!
I LOVE THE EDITED VERSION OF SUMMER MADDNESS. THIS IS THE JOINT, THE MOOD, AND THE VIBE I WANT TO BE IN ALL THE TIME. GOOD JOB. I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THIS TUNE MAN. I'M TRAVELING OR QUESTING IN MY MIND. THIS IS THE TRIP YOU NEVER EVER WANT TO GET OFF MY FRIEND. TALKING ABOUT BEING IN THE ZONE WHOOO.
They just have the instrumental geniuses like back in the day. This song never gets old and you have to listen to it multiple times so that your body feels the soul of these men. Thanks and the remix is on point in the right places. Good music to listen to on full blast whether via head phones or stereo system. The louder it is the more it takes you to another planet. You dont want it to end.
this is the best song they EVER did, but try to find their first song, self titled from 1967!" Kool and the Gang " was a song that let you know these cats were for real !!!
I can remember the time that I spent in Detroit in the early 80's visiting family and going out to Belle Isle listening to the Isley Brothers hit Grove With You. Brings back nice memories of days gone by
Such delicious memories! turning back the clock for us this morning. To, somehow, such a cooler time....But it's all cool everday with the music, the peace.....thanks for extending this wonderful tune.
+robert gascon A reefer! (LOL) You sound like my mom talking about them weeds. (Back in the day of course). ("Didn't I tell you don't be bringing them weeds in my house").
This song is pure genuis and truly timeless, so you can't mess it up. Wherever you start listening to it on the track, beginning or middle, you just jump into the groove and ride it out. It's that type of groove. Thank you Rob and Ron, JT, George, Larry, Dennis, Charles and Rick. I saw you years ago and you had me at "how you doing Birmingham".
Everybody was chillin' when this song played. Transcending time, space and place. THIS was MUSIC. O Yeah ... You did an awesome job on the "ghettoin' down". ;-) Couldn't, Wouldn't want this Classic any other way. Thanks for posting.
im sitting under a palm tree watching the ocean waves crash on the sand. cool breeze hits me every now and then. and a good looking cabana boy is rubbing my feet :)
fantastic song... I heard this 12 years ago on WSMJ 104.3 Smooth Jazz Baltimore. I got into it... I even used it as my on hold music at my old place of business. Listening to it takes me to a better time and place in my life.. thank you for posting.
This song brings me great memories of my early teen years with my boyfriend which is now my husband for 38 years. We use to hang out and end the night with this song. It was so relaxing. Loved the high pitch sound the most if you know what I mean in the 1974 years. lololol........
This brings back memories of N.Y. CD 101.5,, they use to play so many great jazzy tunes like this awesome cut by Cool and the Gang , wish they never went off the air, sure miss that station...oh My bad..101.9. Thanks for the correction confirmation....
Classic song by a classic group of musicians. I long for these good old days of this type of music. Heavy bass, cool funkiness, smooth soul sounds with a sound that lets you close your eyes & imagine the world as your oyster.
Great only-instrumental hits were few, and fewer those which got as much air-play as this one. In the mindless sea of disco music of the 70s, this counterintuitive ballsy experiment made it big.
This song is an original form of true creativity, a definite work of art! Love how it allows me the pleasure of enjoying a type of "non-drug high" embodied with soulful bliss! They don't make music like this anymore! GOD BLESS KOOL & THE GANG!!!
Cant say enough great things about Kool And The Gang!!!! I played this so much I had to keep buying the record back in the early 70s!! Its Still A Favorite !!!!!!
You can THINK about some stuff listening to this! SO MANY MEMORIES...Family, school, boning (LOL), friends, pigtails, GOOD TIMES (literally), sitting/laying on the hood of the car, watching the sun go down...So, wish I could go back to the 70's!
Absolutely! For me this was the greatest decade and era of beautiful, iconic, and thought provoking music. This great jam takes me to so many places... lying on the beach,my bed with my special man who had the magic ability to make me see the sun,the moon, the stars,heaven...the whole universe.Yes,he was THAT good.
this was the sound growing up in Inglewood, CA...block parties, everybody just chillin" and enjoying each other! you could hear Kool and the Gang comin" out of radios everywhere! Thank God for this music playin" in my head to this day! joy
I'm SO ashamed to admit this but I always thought that Herbbie Hancock did this piece. I actually had an "argument" with a co-worker over this song. I Apologize for MY ignorance. THIS will STILL be the Jam 20, 40, 60 yrs from 2030
Airborne Infantry....night jump into an African country....the cavalry coming. Jumping into the black. This music....this jam get your head right. I dig the coexist bumper stickers....there are bad guys out there in the world hurting the weak. My band of brothers did God's work in a land that God got tired of. This music....got me through that. Thanks for the extended version.
Great show and song,excellent group forever KOOL & THE GANG,genius,magic artist,sound acoustic,welcome a board forever excellent,beautiful song.thank forever,forever.
I understand the streetlights lights were mercury vapor lights back then though I understand they were planning or working on putting in the modern day sodium lights.

Helena Herrera, its like being on a wave on the pacific ocean, hearing this song. Real music. Just real.
im sitting under a palm tree watching the ocean waves crash on the sand. cool breeze hits me every now and then. and a good looking cabana boy is rubbing my feet :)
Huni Brown, You go Girl .. : )
HAHAAAAHA!
This is some funky R&b riffs up and down the scales, soul music. You had to be there baby. This is not jazz.
Kool and the Gang, tore this one up!!!! It was the bomb back in the 70s. Nobody could touch this song!!!!!
You go through life and certain songs bring back memories and this is one of them that just take me there.
Yes!!!! good for my soul back in the day, when everything was possible and family was first... what happen to those days..!!
Peace and love!
Now not everyone was that way and not everyone is the opposite now.Plus my understanding the divorce rate was going up in the 70's.
great music back then! what happen!
remember this song so well only I could go back love it
KJLH was the joint back in the day in Los Angeles. That smooth groove for all those West Coastin' folks!
Brian Keys Yes indeed it was!
I was right there with you...Washington high school, Freemont high school, Fair Fax, Imperial highway etc etc
Kindness-Joy-Love and HAPPINESS indeed!...Don't forget KACE, KGFJ, and the O.G. 1580 KDAY. The roaring 80's in L.A. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it was Samoa in Pittsburgh for me!!!
I THINK THIS IS ONE OF
THE VERY BEST GENUINE CLASSIC HIT
FROM
"KOOL AND THE GANG"
AND IT STILL SOUNDS
GOOD AS THE DAY IT WAS RELEASED.

1974 HAD PLENTY OF EVERY THING/ THE SONG SAIDS IT ALL!
Thats,"101.9"
I absolutely love this! Keep on keeping on. Peace!
Classic. Never gets old.
Who is jamming along with me to this 2019?
2021
summer 2024
Just brings me back to a better place and time Kool & the Gang was one of my number one group back in the Dead
Beautiful
therapy.
I played this so much I had to keep buying the record back in the early
70s!!
Its Still A Favorite !!!!!!
All time classic
Michele Washington They don't make 'em like that anymore!
+KimMe Wyatt - On Air You can do that now. When summer finally comes.
MIKECNW...Can't wait!
Always better with headphones.
this was the sound growing up in Inglewood, CA...block parties, everybody just chillin" and enjoying each other! you could hear Kool and the Gang comin" out of radios everywhere! Thank God for this music playin" in my head to this day! joy
This song bring back a lot of memories. Still playing my album.💗💞
I grew up in Philadelphia. This reminds me of Spruce Street. The breeze blowing thru the house 🏠

ACE Champion same here. Those were the great days!
I never imagined the 70's would be the golden era in America.
I still remember the first time I heard this track way back in the day. It blew my mind. NOTHING was this smooth
This is without doubt the best instrumental of All Time. I listened to this as a kid in the late 70s....Still Listening in 2019💯♥️🇬🇧
One of the koolest songs ever
+Tawasha Walker
OHHHHHHHH yeah!
Sounds good to me. You did a great job. Keep up the good workl
I'm SO ashamed to admit this but I always thought that Herbbie Hancock did this piece. I actually had an "argument" with a co-worker over this song. I Apologize for MY ignorance. THIS will STILL be the Jam 20, 40, 60 yrs from 2030
he could made it !
Herbie Hancock was the man also, just not this man
It okay
Airborne Infantry....night jump into an African country....the cavalry coming. Jumping into the black. This music....this jam get your head right. I dig the coexist bumper stickers....there are bad guys out there in the world hurting the weak. My band of brothers did God's work in a land that God got tired of. This music....got me through that. Thanks for the extended version.
Don't know how you did this from a technical POV, but I do know what my ears listened to. GREAT WORK!!!
Great show and song,excellent group forever KOOL & THE GANG,genius,magic artist,sound acoustic,welcome a board forever excellent,beautiful song.thank forever,forever.
Remember driving down Lake Shore Drive at 2 am groovin
I understand the streetlights lights were mercury vapor lights back then though I understand they were planning or working on putting in the modern day sodium lights.
Taking that S curve, and driving to the beat and the sounds of the music. Groovin without a care in the world.
yes I do. Home, Chicago, Illinois!!!!
I wish I could ride too😁
Norman Liverpool Yep! Chicago for sure. Cruising by Lake Michigan.
I saw them live when they played this i nearly lost my mind it was outside it was free and of course it was summer great

Thanks a million for making this more lengthy!!!!!!!! Great "cruising" piece to drive by.
