Nice looking drums… nice throws, good wire choice, very classic look. Really enjoyed the mahogany and the walnut. Walnut is one of my favorite drum woods, it retains that low, dark flavor throughout the tuning range (much like it’s metal counterpart - copper). Where some woods don’t have much character, walnut has plenty. Nice to see Ludwig offering so many great wood choices on an affordable drum.

Thanks Cody and Ben, I've been wandering about these snares, I'd probably be tempted by the cherry if I had to choose one over the other. They certainly look great, tube lugs being my favourite, and 14" x 6.5" a good size. I look forward to your next instalment on these Ludwig Universal snares, as well as any other drum related matters. Great job, guys!

@@SoundsLikeADrum Hi! I think the tunning you had on the Cherry one made it the most versatile. I love Ludwig snare drums. My favorite that I have is the hammered bronze 61/2.

I've always felt that a 6"- 6.5" deep snare is the perfect middle of the road. 4.5"-5" in the shallow end, and 8" on the deep end. Of course materials make a big difference in that equation too.

What is the snare on the lower shelf in the background just above the bass drum? It looks like brass or bronze and has a stunning finish.

Am i the only one who doesn't know what snare to buy? I listened to so many different snares and none of them speak to me, apart from maybe the Benny Greb Signature which is decent but expensive.

anyone tried these in comparison to the Tama SLPs? similar price point, but Tamas have better stock heads, die cast hoops, more size options... what sets these apart?

Nice drums, but why haven't you replaced the UT heads?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

We didn't change the heads or wires because we wanted to demo these the way they would perform if you bought them today! After having gone through a bunch of tunings with these, we found the stock heads and wires to be more than adequate to demonstrate how excellent these drums are.

I've always loved Ludwig for the mahogany tones, but I have to admit the cherry has piqued my interest.

Omg, the wood and number of plies, mixed plies, diagonal etc.. does not make a difference on tone.. this myth has been busted many times. It's just marketing. The heads used, bearing edge and shell depth are the only factors that dictate the tone.

    • @scottapthorpe6172
      @scottapthorpe6172 ปีที่แล้ว

Wrong.....different shells of course will provide you with differing tones...I’ve owned several different wood shells... I can certainly say a walnut shell I had was very dark compared to a maple drum I had...

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

While we agree that there is a lot of marketing hyperbole around drums and quite a bit of snake oil, shell material and construction does impact the sonic characteristics of the drum. While the heads, bearing edges, and shell dimensions are all key factors, the shell material and construction cannot be ignored, as contributes quite a bit to the sonic performance of the instrument. We look forward to demonstrating this for you with our in-depth comparison of thee four drums in a video next month.

If the shell is being properly activated by the heads, (the shell vibrates freely when the heads are lightly tapped) then the frequency characteristics of the shell and also the hardware attached to the shell will be added to the overal tone. It should all work together.

You just watched a video where 4 snare drums sounded different from each other, and the only variable was the type of wood used.
"Omg, the wood and number of plies, mixed plies, diagonal etc.. does not make a difference on tone.. this myth has been busted many times."
If that's true, can you provide some credible references to back that statement up? If you can't show us where you get your information from, I think its safe to assume you're not being completely honest. Prove me wrong and I'll stand corrected and give you an apology for calling you out on this issue.
