David Fincher’s The Social Network is the stunning tale of a new breed of cultural insurgent: a punk genius who sparked a revolution and changed the face of human interaction for a generation, and perhaps forever. Shot through with emotional brutality and unexpected humor, this superbly crafted film chronicles the formation of Facebook and the battles over ownership that followed upon the website’s unfathomable success. With a complex, incisive screenplay by Aaron Sorkin and a brilliant cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake, The Social Network bears witness to the birth of an idea that rewove the fabric of society even as it unraveled the friendship of its creators.

This is without a doubt one of the best opening scenes to a movie ever made. Perfectly sets up Marks character as arrogant, self centered, and eager to please. And that line Erica leaves it on is incredible.
Lies again? Harvard Barcelona Orlando
I don't see it as just him being arrogant. He's also someone who can't communicate with people very well.
For comparison, may I present the best intro to a movie ever made.... th-cam.com/video/gHBhKbF2xMA/w-d-xo.html
@@errwhattheflip Then you haven't seen the movie
@@montyi8 I said "just". He is obviously arrogant, that's obvious. But he also clearly has issues with communicating with people. Half of the time in this sequence he says something, and then stops abruptly, meaning he clearly didn't mean to make it sound the way it did. He's pretty socially awkward and doesn't open up to people very easily
Erica: "I think we should be friends."
Mark: "I don't want friends."
There it is. That's the movie. End credits.

Still waiting on that friend request, Mark?
Cleaver but not clever. Try again
I swear, Erica asking him which club was easiest to get into i think hit him harder than virtually any other insult that was hurled his way the entire film. It may be the only time you see him genuinely hurt for the whole runtime. Gives you an idea what an egocentric individual he is
@Maximus Francisco You were right - no one cares.
Erica isn't even real though, movie doesn't portray Mark accurately either.

The title of this film should've just been "Social Network." It's cleaner.
but not before he made his greatest contribution to the comment section. Drop the "The." Just "Social Network."
Omg, you genius
O
The most accurate title should have been “The first future Social Media who’s going to screw our lives”.
😅😂😂😂
The way this sequence so succinctly captures the essence and motivation of the film is truly magical. Everything from the writing to the acting to the score and lighting portrays a scarred, vengeful, small man, looking to settle a score, against a girl, and against society. A miracle of filmmaking.
fun fact: The script was written in 178 pages. The studio told Aaron Sorkin to cut it off at least 30 pages, but director david fincher decided to keep all the pages. He told Sorkin to read all of them within two hours, and Sorkin succeeded. That's why the dialogues in the opening scene starts when the studio's logo is shown.
Also why everybody talks so fast in the movie.
The scene is immediately followed up by two minutes of Mark running across campus
@@columbus8myhw It's okay they made it up by talking at 2x speed the entire movie haha
@@irishkcguy it's hard to catch their pace if you're non English speaker
I also enjoy the fact that they employed Natalie Portman, being a Harvard grad herself, for advising purposes to truly get an authentic feel for that Harvard culture. I've always liked that opening sequence too, following the initial breakup scene, where Mark is running back to his dorm -- but in the process we get a very good feel of that campus and the surrounding area. Plus it's always crucial in films to have a unique score that helps establish the mood and feel of the movie.
I can only imagine how otherworldly competitive these Ivy-League types are that every waking moment of their lives are spent thinking of ways to be seen by the world as masters of the universe. Erica saw how obsessed Mark was to be a big shot, and she wanted no part of that noise. Good for her.
But mark ended up being a big shot, so can you really blame him?
@@praveeshachapman677 If that is what he wants in life, then no, I don't blame him. But this movie depicted him as the computer geek who wanted universal respect and elite status to shed some "loser" image in the eyes of his peers. It must be exhausting having to grapple with that.

Never have I been made to feel less intelligent by a single conversation than I have in this scene. It is absolutely brilliant. Sorkins writing and the delivery by Eisenberg and Mara are perfect. Just a hurricane of intellect.
Agree 100%
"Hurricane of intellect", well that's a first!
You're probably a hurricane of Intellect too.
It's weird though because it's just his personal idea of how Zuckerberg would talk? All the personal stuff is made up for this movie.
Aaron's brilliant writing mind couldn't have wrote a better comment, well said my man.
Just sounded like showoffs.
The word "facebook" having a dotted underline is such a small detail but it's so significant
You have a good eye sir.
I love how loud the background noise is. Creates such a realistic setting and makes you have to really focus on the characters and what they are saying.
They're speaking so fast that I missed most of what they said.
Quite effective, until you try to play it in front of your class to dissect it and they can't hear anything, ahh!
@@danithoits the point. zuck is trying to appear smart by saying facts quickly, but he isn't wise to know he's being an asshole.
Same with the club scene…music is so loud that it almost feels like you’re overhearing their conversation.
@@danitho I get that -- although I'm from the South (Little Rock, AR) and still picked it up perfectly. That specific interaction between Mark and what immediately becomes his ex-girlfriend is meant to be a quick and witty exchange anyways, so it's perfectly understandable why many people would find it difficult to follow -- but it certainly does come across as authentic given the context.
This movie is like a Swiss watch. Every single moment is written, staged and shot with such precision, and the score, editing, and cinematography give everything this sleek, efficient, stylish texture that you just want to live inside. Really hope Fincher and Sorkin collaborate again.
Small thing I loved here in this clip, the voiceover melds perfectly with the audio from the foreground scene. God I love this movie
Sure, it's a great movie. My only problem is that we all know Zuckerberg, and this guy does not strike me as Zuckerberg. At all. I don't really mean the acting. I just mean this movie is about another person.
also, the conversation in this movie is as realistic as an MCU fight scene
@@hansolo631yeah that’s entirely David Fincher’s style, not meant to be realistic but it follows a certain plow and pace so even with a lot of exposition it never gets boring and seems dynamic. You can watch his other movies to see. Tho in here it’s emphasized more as to show just how Zuckerberg thinks.
I can't describe how the first 20 minutes of this movie make me feel. The music, lighting, tone, dialogue, and pacing are all working in step to create this feeling. The setting tops it off. Makes me long for my college days-even though they were nothing like this. Brilliant.
I literally chose my school (dont worry it was cheap) because the campus made me feel claustrophobic like this movies opening campus walking scene does

3:29 Just noticed that both Mark and his girlfriend both said the phrase "You would do that for me?" sarcastically at different points in the movie as a way of pointing out that they see through the other person's BS. Brilliant.
Also the fact that mark used it the same way showed that he knew exactly what he was doing with Erica and what she meant when she said that phrase
This scene is genius and the rapid banter and the subtle way that Erica's intellect rivals his is something I keep coming back to. Success is genius+opportunity+timing+a little luck. The music is the cherry on top.
You're missing the point. success is literally shown to you in the movie and it keep coming back in every real success story of one man. success is having the nerve to be the biggest evil asshole to your best friends and rightful owners for a share of your success. you cut them off, you stab them in the back. most people won't do that, the extra step.
And that is Erica's greatness at least in her lines here. he will win big, but that's because he got the nerve to be that back stabbing stomping on hearts and heads of others to climb to success. the other factors you wrote are there too. but if you missed this part I entailed you missed the point in the movie about success entirely.
and since every first scene in a movie is like a tl,dr for the entire movie....you missed that scene's point too I guess..
@@editingbasket9728 i think there wasn’t any point to get, and you just wanted to feel like you were right about something. OP is right about success being all the things they named, you don’t have to stab people in the back in order to be successful.
@@editingbasket9728 Yep, genius doesn't have much to do with success. There are countless "geniuses' who aren't successful and there are countless idiots who are.
@@pradabears Except they are right about it. If you look into the reality of many successful people, not the story they sell you in a self help book, you'll see that a lot of backstabbing goes on.

The whole topic of the movie is already covered within the first ten minutes. Great work. In theory Mark has such a great sense for social dynamics and processes. In his own life he is completely lost.

What a masterpiece I swear!!!
The scene of him jogging home is such a god damn masterpiece. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like Harvard could take that scene and basically make it their brochure (Not that they need any help recruiting). It makes me feel like I missed out on a major experience in life by not going there. It very much articulates that this is a crowded campus full of incredibly intelligent people, and yet the one who might make the biggest impact on the world, feels completely alone amidst them. I love how there's even visual continuity in the scene. The steeple that they first pan down from at 5:31 is also visible in the shot at 7:01, and you can tell that Zuckerberg takes a left turn after the cut at 7:27 because the same white tower is visible at the end of that shot and the beginning of the next one.
Funnily enough, I think they mostly shot the film at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore lol but I feel you overall.
It's an amazing scene but idk about Harvard using it as their brochure, because 0 of the shots are in Harvard! Harvard hasn't allowed filming on campus since 1970 so the movies uses a conglomerate of different universities in the US
The opening bar is fairly close to campus and the overhead shot at 5:33 is Harvard Square. The rest is Hopkins :)
@@jlaelite Thankyou. I have not a clue
"It makes me feel like I missed out on a major experience of my life by not going there"
Exactly my feelings watching this scene. Can you imagine being successful, dating successful people, working on solo projects potentially worth millions, hanging out at bars with literal geniuses, and just overall thriving in life at the most prestigious school ever? And here I am, a 28 yo specialist in the army with a GT score of 128 sitting in some backwoods barracks. Shit man...
This movie was perfect in a lot of ways, the editing, acting and soundtrack were really something special.
The music says so much of this intro. You feel something haunting and great is about to happen. This is like the opening dialogue has triggered that.
Also...the bar scene reminds me a lot of Fight Club. Not the film itself but the club scenes. The lights, the cinematography, the slick dialogue. Besides, the fact they keep saying "final club" increases this feeling.
Well, they were both directed by David Fincher, so you're definitely on to something.

This is a great opening scene for a thought I believe is accurate. We can see Mark running back to his place while other people just casually walk and go off with their day. This opening scene is spectacular because it really shows you how calm everything is before Mark's actions take place for the rest of the night, before everyone will be the ones who are running and Mark will be the one walking.

Best scene I have ever seen in my entire life ! For an opening or not, this is the best !
Sorkin writes great dialogue
It does a really good job at putting us in Mark’s shoes. The characters don’t choose their words, they just settle on something they can think of in that moment; the first half of the conversation is just them arguing over what they’re saying, showing how it’s impossible to communicate because of context bullshit; the people are all smiling stupidly and ignoring Mark as he passes them by. We don’t talk about it very often, but when you’re socially awkward, especially because of autism or something like it, there’s a certain contempt you develop for everyone who isn’t socially awkward. We don’t understand them, and we don’t like the things they put us through, so we don’t like them.

I can somewhat sympathize with Mark in the opening scene because I've been in his position before. After feeling someone has rubbed him the wrong way, he immediately takes to the internet and creates something scathing about that person, destroying whatever relationship with them he may have had left.
It feels good to vent the anger at the time, and you don't regret it at first because you feel you don't need them anyway. But give it a few years and you begin to contemplate how different life would have been if you hadn't fallen out. That's when you begin to feel guilty.
Several times after Mark is shown trying to make amends with Erica, meaning even if he doesn't personally believe it, he feels guilty about what he did to her.
