The Polar Vortex Part 2!! Closure is Always an Option!!

  • The Polar Vortex Winter Storm hits with a vengeance!!! Part of the interstate is shut down and it's up to me and Mike to get it open. But can we even get to the crash sites with this weather??? This is only a small part of a long series of jobs, crashes, slide-offs, etc. caused by this rare weather system. Please drive for conditions. These conditions wear on your body, mind, and emotions after a period of time. Fatigue and complacency can get you hurt or worse. NO INJURIES!!! Please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

      Enjoy the luxury...people like the Pratts have to turn the keys ON and crank up the rigs to get the work done (and incidentally, the content for the videos)

      I've been fired for doing that in the past strangely I wasn't able to make it into work on my motorbike when there was a good foot of snow outside.... Blessing in disguise I suppose, I don't want to work for people that don't value my safety.

      Well as a truck driver, they can try to make me move, but in the end its my call on if that key turns or not. Dispatch dont like it, they are more than welcome to fly out and drive themselves.

      To be fair, they were initially for liability and very much still are. Large amounts of documentation (in this case video) is good for insurance when you're in the right and Ron is super careful. There might even be a discount for having footage.

    “people are just idiots” very true sir. I have been a pro driver 36 years and thats a true statement. However, if they weren’t, you would be out of a job. 😉😉

    • @calvinbarnes1721
      @calvinbarnes1721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a fellow pro driver, the first part is very true. the second? Professionals will always have work, and even the best driver can make mistakes or have a bad day. Not a criticism, without the idiots it wouldn't be a full time job. Like pulling over for a flat and the shoulder being softer than it looked and getting stuck (that was a bad morning). Thinking on it, can we leave the bad drivers in the ditch? Please?

    • @bailey125
      @bailey125 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not a pro driver, but I have common sense. It amazes me how careless and nonchalant many drivers are. I live in a country that doesn't really get that bad weather, but when we do I see many people driving as fast as normal. I also see quite a few drivers driving far to slow too (like 25mph in a 60mph) even when the weather is not too bad which is also very dangerous. (and I'm talking normal cars not trucks)

  • @alanreeser2187

    Thank you for sharing your experiences and providing invaluable information for new and experienced tow truck operators, and also for the rest of us. I found one of your videos recently and now am slowly working through your past videos.
    I live in south-east Queensland, Australia. We have a sub-tropical to intermediate climate and while I have snow skied in a southern state, I haven't experienced snow and ice like you worked through in this and other videos. In Queensland, snow is very rare and only falls at high altitudes in a couple of our southern areas.
    Please continue to take care and enjoy your family and life.

    I came across these videos by accident. I have to admit that I was bored (covid 19 bored, stuck at home) & youtube serfing. What I thought when I first saw what had happened I wondered how is this guy going to take care of this. It looked impossible so I had to keep watching & Mr Ron Pratt is amazing. Thank goodness for these modern technology has sure helped. The weather conditions aren't always the best. Now I'm hooked watching. It isn't the safest job. I have a son who is a truck driver & one a police officer so watch I see on TV hits to close to home.. Just be safe out there, so many crazy drivers..

      I see you are thinking and applaud you for trying to be problem solving, so don't take offense to this, but I can tell you don't live in a cold state. Up here in MN when the temps drop below zero, the area around the tailpipe is all frosty from the exhaust moisture. Frost will climb all the way up a pickup's tailgate. His winch would be frost covered that way.

    Ahhh! White gold! Every time it snows, it snows money for the recovery industry. So when you see it snowing, the mantra is: mo money, mo money, mo money. Busy times but as the farmers say, make hay while sun shines. In the recovery business it's, make sales when the snow flies! I'm from Southern Ontario, Canada and we're all too used to that weather. Lately though our weather has gone south and now we're experiencing your weather this season and believe you me, I'm sorry you have to endure that weather but it sure feels good to have sunny skies and 40 degree weather this time of year. Keep up the good work and may the good Lord keep a hedge of protection around y'all working in that nasty weather, God bless! 8)

    Ronn telling me - Leave everything in park
    I'm thinking - where is the nearest park?
    We have this weather every year, even then at the beginning of winter people forget, how to drive.

      Yeah, this is the end of winter, people should have had their refresher course by now. Spring fever?

    This is what i miss about towing. 13 years I did towing and the first snowfall every year was always the worst. It was like NO ONE remembered how to drive in the snow.

    Another interesting cvideo, it answered questions I had on how you keep going , snow chains , diff lock and that leg at the back of the truck to steady you whilst winching .
    Stay slow and safe

    Watching the video.. "Gee that's like every other Tuesday here" then Ron says "We haven't gotten snow like this in years". The first 3, I came across one like that further down in the ditch.. I just drove my truck into the ditch hooked up and pulled her back up from where she came. I'm in Central/North Alberta... didn't even put my winter tires on this year, didn't need them.

    With reference to the vehicle that tried to argue with the fire appliance (British terminology), there's no legislating for stupid!! Based on the temperature indicated by the roadside sign, (8ºF) that equates to -13ºC. That's cold!! Thanks for the team update, Mrs Pratt. That must be a very scary scenario. My thoughts and prayers will be with all involved. God bless from the UK.

    Some people think your truck being so heavy it will not slide or skid, my dad told me once a man owned a heavy car and said that it would not skid on ice, dad told him he had just seen a fully loaded dump truck loaded with rocks do 360's in the road, yes you can skid or slide. God bless you and all emergancy workers in this weather.

    This is weather only a penguin would love. I give all you rescue people credit for being out in this type of weather. The wind makes it feel a lot colder. Georgia shuts everything down when we get snow like this because it happens so rarely. We Southerners are unprepared. It was almost 80 degrees here today.

    As someone who lives in Northern Michigan, I could say, welcome to the north, but I won't. Stay safe, it's not so much how you drive but you don't know how the 'other guy' drives. So you have to take extra precautions while out in that mess.
    Edit: I should add, at my age, 71, I don't like driving in weather like that either.

    Lithium batteries do not like the cold and will dump their charge in a hurry, the cold slows or stops the chemical reaction that makes them work.
    Stay safe and keep up the good work.

    My helmet cam for my motorbike used to do that all the time when I was out in all weathers. Nothing you can really do if you can't keep it warm. Best I can suggest is keep the batteries somewhere warm before taking them out to use them when you are really ready.

    I spent 20+years just south of Erie, PA. I remember driving home from school/work in the snow guessing where the road was by the location of the telephone poles. This was because it was 1) snowing so hard you couldn’t see or 2) the road was drifted over or 3) both!! I now live in Florida and hate the heat, but I don’t have to worry about freezing to death in a snowbank!
