      I was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. At the time Bensonhurst was 95% Italian and Italian imigrants. We were aware of the mob and looked away if something looked suspicious.
      Bensonhurst was protected by the mob. We never had worries of break ins.
      I worked in Manhattan for over 10 years. On Wall Street, also, uptown on Madison Ave. Great experience. But expensive, lol.
      For NY to be a wonderful experience, you have to have money. A lot of it.
      Food of any kind is 4 times more than average. You can't live anywhere near if you are not paying bank for rent.
      When I lived there, rents in Bklyn were still somewhat reasonable (for NY). We were luckier than the rents today. They are now out of stratosphere.
      Christmas in NY is magical. As long as you have money to pay for all the wonderful things to do.
      If you cant afford taxis to take you everywhere, you'll need to take the NY subways. That is a trip in itself.
      Be careful of pick pockets everywhere. I was on A train when I had a woman steal my wallet from my purse.
      I knew it was happening, but let it. I was on a crowded A train where I was only the 3rd white person and I knew the 40 bucks in my wallet wasn't worth whatever would have gone down if I said something.
      But, I will say this, New Yorkers have heart. You said hi to your neighbors. You helped people who had less. Italians love feeding people.
      At least at that time ny was a fun and exciting place to be. It's all different cultures now.

    You're the first reactor I've seen to instantly recognize that Michael was telling the truth to Frank Pentangeli, and playing Hyman Roth. Most people are fooled and think it's the other way around. Kudos.
    There are two ways to read Michael bringing Frank's brother to the Senate hearing. The most obvious is that it's a threat; keep your mouth shut, or I'll kill your brother. But I prefer a different reading. Look at his brother's face when he enters the room, seeing Frank at the witness table surrounded by lawyers and federal agents. He's in disbelief, wide-eyed and mouth agape in bewilderment. I believe Michael brought Frank's brother, a non-English speaking old world Italian likely involved with the mafia as well, knowing that Frank wouldn't dare break his "oath of omerta" (silence) in the presence of his brother. It was a tactic to shame Frank, not threaten him. Become a rat? Never.
    Lastly, in the final scene when we jump back in the past to Vito's birthday party and Michael announces that he joined the military, everybody admonishes him and says it's a dumb thing to do and a big mistake. Only Fredo gives encouragement and loving support, and tells him congratulations. That hits so deep, knowing what happens in the end...
    Also the reveal that that Sonny was the one who introduced Carlo and Connie! The awful irony!

    • @CaptainTinny
      @CaptainTinny  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I thought the way they framed the opening were Frank was upset with Michael at the meeting for not helping him was supposed to establish Frank as a suspect to the failed hit but I never really thought it was him because it felt a little too obvious. (He was obviously unhappy with the meetings result, but in retrospect the people who put out hits do not often show their true emotions beforehand, just my opinion)

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought Sonny introducing Carlo to Connie was something Ford Coppola made up to add to the story until I read the book

    • @philipcone357
      @philipcone357 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might want to read The Godfather. The book covers the flash backs in part 2 and the first movie but there is a lot more to it. Coppola originally had a 3 1/2 hour movie on his hands he had to cut down. A lot of James Caans stuff had to be cut out. Fredo in the book is a tough guy. You may enjoy The Freshman. With Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando. Also On The Waterfront and Streetcar named Desire.

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipcone357 though even in the book Coppola still added things to the backstory. That Don killing his family & Vito getting revenge was something Coppola added also Fredo was not a tough guy in the book. Micheal warning him not to take sides against the family is still in there. Micheal didn't seek kay either. It was kay who seeked Micheal after his mom told her he was a killer and she shouldn't get mixed up in the business. But she chose to anyways. Also The Don knew about Carlo beating Connie but told her now that she was married she had to obey her husband

    I'm glad you didn't wait to watch part 2. I love how you track the characters so well. Many people who react to the Godfather movies tend to get lost a bit but you had them all down. Personally, I have trouble deciding which of the two films I prefer because both are so excellent. I do recommend watching the third of the trilogy BUT... it is very different than 1 and 2. Worth seeing but not of the same caliber in most every regard. The bar was set way so high, it was almost impossible to equal a third time. When you have a chance, there is a somewhat lengthy YT interview video of Francis Ford Coppola discussing the making of the Godfather which is super interesting. I bet you didn't know that Brando and Pacino were both vehemently ruled out by the execs but Coppola won out, thank goodness. Lastly, I like this layout. Great job, CT.

    Good research. To answer your question, Clemenza and Tessio were equally ranked caporegimes, each with their own separate soldiers/army.
    Interesting backstory: Once organized, Vito separated Tessio and Clemenza on different sides of New York and told them to never be seen talking to each other. Clemenza was the stupider one, so Vito kept him close so Clemenza wouldnt do something dumb. People thought Vito had only ONE caporegimes, but in fact, he had TWO.
    Vito separated Tessio and Clemeza for two VERY GOOD reasons:
    1.)keep them from getting ideas and conspiring against him in the future
    2.)make the underworld think Tessio's army was DIFFERENT family and not part of Vito's family so that no one knew the TRUE strength of Vito's organization. Isnt that genius? Vito made the underworld underestimate his TRUE strength so that he'd have a tactical advantage if gang-war broke out.
    A rival gang made a move against Vito and in the ensuing war, Tessio would strike from the blind side and fade away. The enemy NEVER knew how the Don could have his men in so many places at once. In the end, Tessio was instructed by the Don to pretend to form an alliance with the enemy, but in reality ASSASSINATE Vito's enemies, once they let Tessio get close enough.
    Also, the guy who kept Michael hidden in Sicily is the SAME guy who got shot off his feet right after Vito assassinated his father's killer. (They had to drag him in the car before backing out of the compound). They pulled that job together, which is why Vito could trust him with his son, Michael.

    I think Michael seemed so ruthless partly because of his military/ combat experience. Brutality based in logic and planning. Michael's weakness is his dreams of becoming legitimate. Vito's advantage was that from a young age he knew there is no such thing as legitimate... corruption is rampant everywhere and safety lies only in power. But Vito's power was based on money and relationships backed by violence. While Michael's circumstances in a changing world made is power based on violence and fear backed up by money and connections.

      Michael was fine until Apolonia was killed. Her death is what triggered him into being cold and ruthless. The warmth of his personality that we see at the beginning of Part 1 disappears until Part 3.

They were very nice, and Connery threw a big party for the crew and extras. Costner was talking about directing even then. DeNiro kept to himself, but people who did meet him said he was very polite and gracious. He even asked for permission to use the phone!

    “Once Upon a Time in America” by Sergio Leone is definitely important to watch. Leone is better known for his westerns (the Clint Eastwood trilogy and others) but he brings the same artistic genius to this story of the development of mob characters. It stars Robert De Niro and features many gorgeously shot scenes.

    The newer format is less distracting - I like it.
    Godfather III is a must see because...well because it's the story of the Corleones, and you are now part of the family, like the rest of us. It was nominated for 7 Oscars, including Best Picture - but it didn't win in any of its categories. There are two cuts available on video - A) The Godfather Part III: Final Director's Cut, with 9 additional minutes (1991), and B) The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone (2020). Many reviewers recommend the coda over the enhanced original theater cut due to improvements in plot editing - however, I cannot testify to the quality of the coda because I haven't yet seen it.

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 ปีที่แล้ว

      Godfather Part 3 is NOT a "must-see." There are TONS of "must sees" that reactors never do, so please don't waste reactors' time and editing energy on such a piece of garbage. OF COURSE it didn't win any categories, what are you CRAZY? They only nominated it because they HAD to nominate it. "GOODFELLAS" is what was nominated against it. THAT'S the story of 1990 mob movies, that and the parody of "Godfather", Brando in "The Freshman", a big hit and an actual funny comedy from Andrew Bregman. "Godfather Part 3" is a piece of a crap, and frankly I'm disgusted and embarrassed by the only-on-the-internet contingent of dummies who wallow in mediocrity and champion that worthless piece of garbage, that EMBARRASSMENT to Coppolla's career and the Godfather "franchise".

      In the original script for Godfather III, which was supposed to be made much earlier, the plot was going to be a war between Michael and Tom Hagen. Tom was always a great operator. He was always put in charge of taking care of high profile targets, the movie producer in Part 1, and the Senator in Part 2. Tom could be just as ruthless as Michael but more control of his emotions. It would have been great to see a war between the two of them.

    You want more Brando? Go back to two classics: On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Name Desire. There are many more, but if you are looking to see some top notch acting with Brando in his younger days, you might want to start here. Also, my opinion is that you watch Godfather part 3, but on your own so you have some closure and see how this family evolved and what happens to Michael. It wasn’t something I would watch again and again, but I think everyone that throughly loved the first two should see how it all wraps up. I saw both of these as they were released in my early twenties, and in both movies you could have heard a pin drop; the audiences at both were riveted seeing it on a gigantic screen with acting unmatched and a musical score and cinematography that was out of this world stunning.

    Just a bit of cast trivia- at the Senate hearing where the mysterious unknown man in the peasant cap follows Michael in the panelist who asks who he is is played by legendary indie director/producer/distributor Roger Corman in a tribute appearance. Corman gave Francis Ford Coppola his earliest breaks in the industry including directorial work on The Terror (63) with Boris Karloff and a young Jack Nicholson and a nifty Psycho knockoff- Dementia 13 from the same year. Several Corman alumni are fond of putting him in bit roles, including Joe Dante who cast him as a hapless phone booth user in the werewolf horror The Howling (80) and Jonathan Demme who put him in Silence Of The Lambs (91) as an FBI official.

    Yes, compared to the others, 3 is weak ... but it still is good enough to watch. There´s a new cut (2020) called "The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone" and Coppola makes clear that 3 is actually an Epilogue, dealing with loose ends. If you watch 3, I would recommend the Coda, but be sure to also watch the very last minute of the original cut.

    Loved yer two video posts on this movie, lots of good stuff. So as for #3, to be fair, it is hard to follow up lightning in a bottle and I would never wish that upon anyone, let alone TWO artistic achievements that live on in history... and, the work a director does in their youth is different that something they take on years later in their life. Having said that, yeah, #3 isn't in the same league as the first two, but, in terms of story, if you just want 'story' and 'what happens', then yes, do watch it. I've watched #3 a number of times.
    p.s. As someone that has watched Goodfellas countless times and agrees on its place up on that list, I say ABSOLUTELY yes to Sexy Beast and Eastern Promises, if not all on that list.

      It's a piece of crap and who the hell was wondering "what happened next" when they finished "Godfather Part 2". Who? NOBODY. Nobody was wondering "when are they going to make another sequel to the Godfather"? Quite the opposite! It was seen as the GOLD standard in sequels (and "franchises"), and now it isn't. You have no clue it seems as to WHY the third one sucks. You hilariously and (errouneously) chalk it up to him being an older director. Buddy......there are TEN THOUSAND reasons why it sucks. Most of them have to do with PARAMOUNT. Who played it cheap. It's a piece of crap and please, don't take up reactors time and energy watching such a piece of mediocrity. It's not a good movie AT ALL. Only a person who only knows the shallow of the pool crap of the 80s and 90s thinks The Godfather Part 3 is anything approaching a good movie. The audience I saw it with LAUGHED at it, in 1990. What more proof do you need?

    I do like your layout. It looks cleaner. For good mob movies, I suggest you look into Mean Streets, with DeNiro and Harvey Keitel, and The Pope of Greenwich Village, with Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts. This last one has some comedy in it, and the first is an early Scorsese. DeNiro is brilliant. I grew up watching the mob movies of the 1930s on TV- Little Caesar, Scarface (the original), Public Enemy, etc. and I was from Chicago, where most of the action took place!

    Unpopular opinion: you should see part III. It is the capstone. Can't stand alone but it completes the story. The affair between two people who may or may not be first cousins (illegitimate son) is uncomfortable. Supposed to be. The family is losing its way.

    Two quasi-mob movies I'd recommend: "The Sting" (Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw) and "Some Like It Hot," a comedy, with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe). Something you said made me think: Michael becomes more like Sonny -- hot-headed -- than his Father Don Vito -- courtly but not to be fooled with. No matter what you hear about the third film, please disregard the negative feedback or low viewer ratings -- while not the best one in the trilogy, it brings a semblance of closure to various players in this epic family history. Try the mob movie "A History of Violence," another with Viggo Mortensen, like "Eastern Promises."

    I have seen it said elsewhere (so I am not claiming credit) that Vito's three boys were parts of him. Sonny was his passion and devotion to family, Fredo was his compassion and heart (but stupid), and Michael was his intelligence and cunning. Each had their flaws and could not replicate Vito. While Part 3 was clearly the weakest of the three films, it was interesting to watch the evolution of Connie who had the largest transition across movies (and especially developed in later part of 2 and all of 3). In the end, I think she was most similar to Vito.

    The Godfather Part II is the best mob movie ever to me! You should complete the trilogy: I think The Godfather Coda (Part III) is the best version--to me it best expresses what Coppola was trying to say with the entire Godfather series. Of the other movies from your list, I love Once Upon a Time in America, Donnie Brasco and Road to Perdition. American Gangster and a Bronx Tale are good, too. Another one of my favorites, though, that's not on that list is Miller's Crossing. It's an amazing film.

I've watched all of then about a million times each. But yes, part 3 is very worth it, especially since you're already vested into Michael. It's a good completion. Just don't expect the epic that 1 or 2 were, and understand that going in, it's not terrible and very worth watching.

    I liked all the films on that top 10 list except once upon a time in America, sexy beast and long good friday. Imo scarface, carlito's way and snatch are better gangster films. Carlito's way, scarface and the untouchables are all by brian de palma btw (pacino stars in 2 of them). I also think the original infernal affairs was a fantastic film, it's a hk film, the departed is a remake of this film. Also if you watch Donnie brasco, I highly recommend the director's cut.
    You might find it a bit old fashioned but I also love a lot of gangster films from the 30s to 40s with George raft, Paul muni, James cagney and Edward g Robinson. If you like TV series, you might enjoy the sopranos, boardwalk empire and peak blinders. Gangster films are my favorite genre, there are 2 comedy gangster films that I love: Oscar with Sylvester Stallone and dick tracy with pacino.

    I feel like we see in the second film how Michael’s way of doing things is wrong while we applaud what he did in the first film. Yes eliminating the other families seemed great in the short term, but long term it shows the cracks in his armor. The second film shows that he can never live up to the Don his father was. You can’t use violence as your answer all the time. Yes people fear you, but they don’t love and respect you. Vito was the perfect Don, he was feared, but loved and respected by all, even his enemies. Vito was always around family, Michael wound up alone, to no surprise. I wonder if Michael would’ve been different if Appolonia lived, who I think was Michael’s true love. She settled him down and brought out his warm side, but all of that was ripped out of him after she died. Kay was his wife for business but not for love.
