Robert Reed may have though this show was beneath him but there is no denying he was perfect as the father and he played the role that no other actor could
This is actually what the 70's would've been like in a perfect world. Sherwood Schwartz created this show wanting to block out all the bad stuff happening in the 70's like drugs, sex, protests, hippies and the Vietnam War. People think this show illustrates the 70's but it actually doesn't. "All in the Family," actually illustrates the 70's much better. It really dates that time period. Sherwood said he wanted "The Brady Bunch" to be dated but it doesn't really date the 70's that much.
@@alexanderpytko5394 The Brady Bunch is very 70s more "internally" as with the fashions, the cars, the decor, the lingo. Still very 70s dated. With "All in the Family," yes it dealt with real timely issues but even so, as great as it was, it also dealt with more than a bit of fantasy. Like when the two "nice and friendly" home invaders enter the Bunker home, unless Norman Lear cut out the scenes where they beat Archie and Edith and rape Gloria. Lear was daring in some regards, but cowardly in others.
Plus they were able to afford a live-in housekeeper (Alice) whom they also took with them on their vacations and who did a lot of the refereeing of the children, reducing the need of Mike & Carol to do much diciplining themselves.
It's the same on all kinds of shows: Brady Bunch, WKRP, Gilligan's Island: there is an underground fan club of viewers who secretly think the plain Jane character is hotter than the bombshell/supermodel character.

It's more of a 60s way of life.
