- Sooooooo, about Olivia Benson.
I guess it's safe to say that she's an iconic and record breaking character.
Now, what I've realized after binge watching all 21 seasons of SVU is that she's a moderfucking badass. I mean, I already knew but DUDE if you stop and think about it for a minute there, it just hits you how much crap she went through since she moment she was CONCEIVED(!!!!) and how strong she is to having made it out alive and somehow mentally sane (I don't know how that's possibile).
She had to deal with the fact that she's the product of a rape her whole life and you can see how much it affects her in the earlier seasons. She's literally afraid of herself and who she is and who she might turn out to be and then she grows and she learns to see what everybody else sees: a strong and good hearted human being, that knows what's good and what's not and that chooses everyday to do good.
Other than that there's the fact that her mother was a drunk, and then there's Harris and then Elliot leaving (Never gonna forgive one single soul for that) and then Lewis and then Lewis again.
But she survived and got Noah, which I think was pretty much what changed her the most and what really made her realize that she wasn't her father nor her mother. She was better than both of them. A whole lot better than them and I think Noah just made her see that simply and clearly.
But then of course things can't be good for too long in fact she almost lost him TWICE in the course of what? 9 episodes? Probably. Whatever SVU, we get it. But then again, she's till there and she's thriving and she's the absolute queen.
Everything possible happened to her and she dealt with it and still did her job when it hurt and when it felt like she couldn't because what she truly couldn't do was walk away BECAUSE SHE'S JUST THAT AWESOMEomigodilovehersomuch.
I mean, I think it's pretty heroic that she chose this job in the first place, given her situation, but the fact that she never gave up even when all that other crap happened to her just blows my mind and it makes me angry BECAUSE SHE'S NOT REAL BUT WE NEED AN OLIVIA BENSON IN THIS WORLD. DAMN IT.
OF COURSE, Olivia Benson is amazing and all but let's not forget who made as iconic as she is.
Give Mariska Hargitay all the awards, honestly.
She gave this show and this character not only literally her whole career but also everything she had and it shows. Plus I think it's inspiring and admirable that this show became her mission in real life.
She fights the bad guys, in different ways, on and off screen. She's completely invested and at this point I wonder just how much of Olivia is actually Mariska and the fact that I can't tell just makes me glad SHE is real because we might not have Olivia Benson but we do have Mariska Hargitay and if you know all the god she does that's good, if you don't then look it up.
Because she's just as incredible as Olivia. Truly.

2:32-2:43 I love love love this parallel. The later scene was post-Lewis and still she retains her utter defiance at the world no matter how hard it tries to bring her to her knees. She has been that way from day one and through everything, that fight, that strength, that fire in her eyes and in her soul has never once wavered. The strength that it takes to survive everything she’s been through and still do this job: it was always in her, from the feisty young detective whose ambition almost got her kicked off the squad numerous times to the seasoned Captain she is today. Olivia Benson, ladies and gentlemen. A class act indeed.
She is an icon and she will go down as one of the best female tv characters of all time, no doubt.

She's a strong person with everything that happened to when she was young;
Mariska is literally my idol and I look up to her so much. She is literally one of the greatest actress ever. she makes her character really come alive. You did such a good job to highlight everything she has achieved.
How does Olivia survive? She's such a strong woman! She absolutely deserves more joy and happiness in her life.

She was definitely good in the early years, but over the years the ratings have steadily dropped. According to some people she overstepped her association with some of the victims. She should have stepped aside so social workers and therapists could work with them. In many episodes she acted very unprofessional to the ADAs and defense attorneys for the accused.
dttruman i agree with you. I think it’s obvious that she does more than a cop would normally do and she’s not always right but that’s a tv choice I actually agree with, mostly for Mariska. She worked hard during 20 years and that’s a lot and if the show is still standing is mostly thanks to her so I think she deserves to be on the spot and if this is the writers’ way to give her credit then, from my point of view, so be it. I’d honestly be mad if at this point she was treated like any other character. (Like I’m a bit mad that Fin is treated sometimes like less than the other)

dttruman no I get what you say, I don’t think you’re a hater, absolutely. On a certain level I agree with you. I think that they keep renewing it because, even if it’s not the same anymore, people still enjoy and watch it also because I mean it’s not THAT bad. It still works and they’re gonna run it for as long as they can and I for one am really glad because I love it so hahaha but I totally understand what you say. Also I’m glad that such an important show, that broke a lot of records, has a strong female leading character.
@@sosoffete9341 Even that "breaking records" is a little deceiving if you ask me? considering "Gunsmoke" ran more episodes per season puts the whole thing in question.
dttruman well I don’t know how many episodes for season gunsmoke had but svu has an avarage numer of episodes per season. Once 19, once 25 I believe and then always around 22-24 and it’s usually the number of episodes for a show. Also they never spoke about record of episodes but of seasons and I think they deserve it because they made it so far honestly and fairly and not with like 10-13 episodes per season. That would have made me question the title of record breaking show.
