You remind me that I've yet to watch that 2022 PBS documentary on Ron Carter, "Finding the Right Notes," that you mention. Which reminds me that I have to catalog my LP collection in Discogs, because your comments piqued my interest in listening to this record... and when I went to look it up I hadn't even remembered that I already have it! As for Carter, his long, elegant hands are as memorable as Monk's chunky ones, though obviously in an entirely different way. Love to see and hear them in action!
Re the documentary: just like the Wayne Shorter one, it's good but IMHO suffers from the typical problem of docs made about a living subject, namely that there is pressure on the director to spend more time focusing on present-day Ron (which is what Ron finds interesting, of course) rather than his years of greatest musical impact. There is arguably just enough about the Miles years but not much on his first years in NY or on his CTI years. More of a feature than a biography I guess.
Great video! There is a book called “Jazz From Detroit” by Mark Stryker that I think you’d enjoy given your emphasis on history in the videos. I appreciate your well-researched style while remaining concise. Lots to learn from each video!
Yesss bass players and piccolo bass! Thank you, amazing album! As an aside, have you heard Erik FriedLander’s tribute to Oscar Pettiford? Bohemia After Dark is amazing, let me know what you think of it! Thank you, your videos bright my day! Also, just saw Ron Carter live last November, amazing stuff! Renee Rosnes on the piano w him, insane gig, very well arranged.
Thanks very much, and I’m glad you enjoy them. Bohemia After Dark is something I’ve been looking for on and off for a few years but the stars have never aligned!
If I can be of assistance re: acoustics, tweaking, suggestions in interior spaces, I'd love to reciprocate your fantastic effort with any free technical engineering suggestions. Simply reach out . Thanks again for your top rated (to me) YT channel. 👍
That’s a very kind offer. I am in the fortunate position of having had helpful recent guidance from a friend with a production background, and am in the process of implementing a number of his recommendations. While for the moment I’m well supported I really appreciate you reaching out.
It blows my mind that at 87 Ron Carter has an active TH-cam channel. God bless him!
If you’ve not seen “Finding The Right Notes” I recommend it. Slim on the history but rich in terms of RC the man today.
My Hometown Brother. Makes Me very proud to be from there.
So many great Detroit jazz folk.

Glad to be of service. But beware: whenever I get into an archival/organizing frame of mind, I end up buying records I realise I "need."

The shacket is the new lumberjacket.
Great record. And another great episode, Allan.
Thanks :)
Another first class video Allan, many thanks. I've got this on order from Pure Pleasure here in the UK, cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it Mark.

Thanks - I’ll seek that out! It’s just astounding how many great players came from Detroit, and especially through that one high school.
