@@itoobot Frugal... The joint strike fighter program springs to mind in its boundless frugality. Especially when you look at the mission profile Canada would require it for. They have such high maintenance requirements they spend more time broken than flying. Our procurement program is so beyond broken that major cap programs take 12 years on average for deployment. Our military is about as capable as a wet paper bag at the moment. The cycle of history sees our military gutted time and time again only to be needed but then the cost is enormous. Kicking a problem down the road is not frugal.

Both delayed equipment replacements. Both clawed back or cut budgets. Bth make big announcements about procurement & then delayed or canceled. The Canadian voters have never made the status of the Canadian military a voting priority. Both play to that & take their cue from that. NATO & NORAD allies have every right to call Canada out. They should do so forcefully. With trade tariffs & trade restrictions.

Canada should boost spending on defence R&D, develop technology, and sell its products to NATO. Technology can always be used for multi-purpose purposes, including agriculture, computers, chip design, software, and health-related purposes. Canada has no physical threat like Europe and does not have the numbers to have a standing army, so why would it spend on a military that it does not have?

As a Canadian I'm proud of our country in many ways but as far as defence spending goes, it's an embarrassment. We should be spending AT LEAST 2%, but 3% would be better. Not only do we need to pull our weight with out allies but we have to protect our own turf better, particularly the arctic. I want peace but to have peace one has to prepare for war, and we aren't prepared enough.

It is indeed embarrassing that a rich country like Canada can't reach the very basic and agreed-to 2% contribution. It is, unfortunately, one more element in the effacing role and reputation of Canada on the international scene. I recently drove beside a canadian military convoy heading out of victoria for training and it looked like a bunch of rusted out hulks that CVSE would condemn if they were pulled over for an inspection. It was wild to see the state of disrepair the equipment was, and all the soldiers uniforms looked like 4th or 5th generations hand me downs. Sad stuff

Except we don't. We can't design and build our own fighter jets, we can't build tanks, and artillery. Even our ammunition plants fall far short of being able to produce enough artillery shells to meet our needs.

actually when Harper was in charge, defence spending WAS higher than current, and plans were in the works, including financial, to add things like new jets and other equipment. We had also had decent amounts of new recruits. Now hardly anyone wants to join because of the shitshow JT has created
