If I had to choose only one of those, it would be the U.S. made version. Just an absolutely gorgeous knife. But the Chinese version definitely has it's place, especially if you want one knife for the collection and one to throw in your pocket for a work knife. Glad you've got both! Cheers, buddy!
I still have the one I bought at the country store when I was a boy in 1978. My blades are in good condition but completely turned dark with patina and it sharpens up excellent.
Amazing!
My parents gave me an 8OT for my 13th birthday in 1992. I’m almost certain that’s the same model my granddad used when I was even younger. I carried mine almost every day for many years (my High School in Texas didn’t mind pocket knives with blades under 4” in those days). I sadly lost it sometime after college, about the same time that Schrade originally closed down. I was heartbroken. Was so happy to stumble upon the new ones a few years later in a truck stop, even if it was a Chinese model and stainless steel. That one is still my EDC knife. I use it almost daily. Might have to see if I can find a used USA one. I did get my granddad’s tiny but vintage 12OT when he died. It’s in my medicine cabinet for delicate work.
Loved reading this 🙏🏼
Both look like they are good pocket knives. It is really cool to have an older knife and knowing someone carried it and had history with it. Thanks for the video.
Pretty cool to see a side-by-side comparison such as this, thanks very much for sharing. Cheers!
An excellent look at the differences between the two. Good on you for finding such a good example of the old USA version across the pond. Thanks for the great video, Slippy.
Thanks TK 🫡
I have an old usa model like yours that belonged to my dad.
I like that you appreciate something quality made.
Myself, I really like the steel.
Pretty much the knife my father carried, very similar. Threw 'em in his pocket and that was it, never oiled, rarely sharpened, etc. Thanks for the comparison!
I just found out that old timer is making the heritage series in the USA with 1095 carbon blades! They are about $71 and smaller than the original.( just over 3 inches long) ive heard nothing but great reviews about the quality. Just putting that out there if you had not heard. That old american one is probably better though! Thanks for the comparison!
Thanks brother 🙏🏼
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great comparison! I have an American made 34OT and it has a comfortable feel, either in your pocket or hand. I really like the Chinese Rough Ryders. Very good quality!
Thanks for watching!
I have a Chinese 8OTB and an American 8OT and i got the itch for an American 8OT from your wonderful video. I love both but prefer the feel of my American one for edc. It just feels different. When I'm expecting hard use, the Chinese one is my go to just because its easier to replace but i really love both knives.
Make sure you grab one, they're awesome
Great find pal and both an example of a solid working carry.atb paddy
Good video. I have a new Old Timer I’ve had for years in a drawer in my work shop. Watching your video made me wonder what I had as I haven’t looked at it in a long time. Took a quick trip outside and discovered it’s a 80T new in the box. I bought it to carry but never did. Here in Alabama they aren’t that rare I wouldn’t think. If we have our pants on we have a pocket knife. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching Keith 🤘🏻
Nice comparison video!
Thanks Drew
Nice!!!
Have them both. Good knives.
Awesome
Great comparison video. Both are nice but I love the USA made, even with the use.
Thanks for watching Randy 🫡
No, the Old Timer steel was 1080, which is which is one reason Old Timer knives were so much cheaper than top tier brands such as CaseXX, Boker, Queen, etc. 1080 is a pretty good knife steel, but it has very low abrasion resistance and dulls quickly. This also means it sharpens very easily, of course, and many loved this about Old Timer knives. I didn't, but many did. When you add real bone scales and overall better construction and features, such as half stops, it was easy to see why Old tome never made it to the top tier of knives.
Back when I was young, the Old Timer was often called the "poor man's CaseXX", and it was a name that fit well. Just about all the kids I knew started with an Old Timer as their first knife, usually when we were seven or eight.
Awesome I knew it was carbon just wasn't 100% sure if it was 1095 🙏🏼🫡
I had one of those US made Old Timer’s (the little 12OT “Pal”), they’re great and well built. I hope to come across another one in that series at a garage sale, etc.. Schrade discontinued the 12OT “Pal” is 2004…
It might be more correct to say the US made 12OT was discontinued, it might still be available through their Chinese manufactured line. Thanks for the video Sawyer.
I believe it's still available from the overseas ones 🫡
I just got one of the new Chinese made ones. Fit and finish is pretty good, except that the factory edge on the blades was only slightly sharper than a butter knife. I have no patience for a dull knife so I got busy with a whetstone. I’ll have to see how it holds up.
Shame it wasn't sharp OTB, but I bet it's like a razor now 👏🏼
Old Timers used to be sold in nearly every hardware store and sporting goods department here in the USA 1970s and 1980s. Good quality and budget friendly. Were/are they common in the UK then or now?
Not the USA made ones, but you can get the Chinese made ones pretty easily 🫡
I have had an 80T in my pocket since the 1960s. While I prefer the carbon steel USA made ones, the Chinese versions are quite useful and robust in manufacture. Today, I have stopped looking for the older ones. The Chinese-made ones are of very good quality and serve well as everyday pocket knives. My favorite design of all knives.
Thanks for sharing
I recently picked a up a China made Buck folder because it was on sale around 11$, it was surprisingly good quality. I wouldn't buy another one though, I'd rather pay twice the price for a U.S. made knife.
Thanks for watching
Interesting comparison there Slippy. USA is easily the better one in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing 😁
The one Chinese made Old Timer that I like better than the original is the Lumberjack. The Chinese version has real bone scales, and I like the stainless steel it uses more that the stainless steel on the original
Great looking knives! I would rather have the American made one!
Agreed Mike, the Chinese one is fantastic for the price though, I love both 🫡
I own two schrade mini stockman knives one is usa made other is China I git the two to see difference if any couldn't tell difference both are great 👍🦊🐾
Both the USA and china made old timers are great 🙏🏼

If you don't mind me asking what is the USA made one worth in the UK?
All depends on the condition, I have a new old stock that can go for £50+ and a used one that's £30+
Where did you manage to pick that up from cant go wrong with a usa made knife
Etsy UK brother 🤘🏻
They really should be dimensionally the same because China not only bought the Schrade name in 2004 I believe they procured the plans as well. I do not own any Chinese Schrades but have thought about getting one to use and abuse for comparison. In my mind they will never be the same though.
It's the machinery discrepancy that makes it different and the lack of hand finishing 🤘🏻
@@SlipjointSawyer That's not all. Schrade had a person working there that really knew what he was doing when it came down to blade temper. This person was extremely good. I'm afraid the Chinese just haven't got it down when it comes to tempering a blade.
I like the Chinese mad Old Timer knives, because I never have to worry about them rusting. You will never see a carbon steel knife without a little patina on it. This patina is nothing but fine grain rust. The Chinese made Old Timers that I own are as sharp as a razor, right out of the box and stainless is much easier to sharpen than carbon steel, IM.hO.
Awesome, thanks for watching
Both are decent work knives, good find on the USA Matt. The Chinese are common, but the USA made are pretty rare. Thank you for the comparison video.
I really dislike the look of the Chinese made ones. I don't like all the brass
China has been making some good knives and they are inexpensive
They are making some exciting stuff
