After watching this video, I called the Irvine Subaru dealership out of curiosity to see what they would charge me. They estimated $128 with a full inspection. Even after conveying I read up on this issue and found that this part might resolve it, they still tried to sell me the full inspection because the part was no guarantee to fix it. When I came into their service department to buy the part, their worker told me that this was a common part being bought. I’m certain the person I spoke to on the phone knew of the issue, and still tried to rip me off. That really bothered me. Anyways, the part cost $17.12 and it took 5 minutes to remove and replace. But my luck is that I did not use the switch that you twist off and on. I had the one with the nuts. Getting it out was no problem but putting it back on you have to have extremely nimble fingers which this 67 year old man does not have so it took me awhile. Anyway, I want to thank you for providing this very helpful video. I am sure you helped save me a lot of money. I am grateful, so thank you kindly.
Thank you so much!! Had the same problem with my '14 Forester. Went to the dealer, got the part for $15 and took less than 2 minutes to install. Problem fixed!!! Your video saved me a ton of time and money. I'm so grateful!
YOU ARE THE MAN! You've saved me a ton of $$$ and I owe you a ton of gratitude!!! Thanks for the extremely concise instructional. My wife's 2015 Subaru Forester had the same error lights as you did: ABS, Hill Assist & Traction Control PLUS the shifter would get stuck in "Park". I had to pop off the little plastic cover just next to the shifter and stick a screwdriver into the hole to manually unlock the shifter every time I shift out of "Park". I replaced the exact part and it works like a charm! Thank you!!!..... Thank you!!!..... Thank you!!!
Thank you for the easy fix. Worked like a charm and saved a lot of time. After inserting the part, the rear brake lights and the hill assist light stayed on. This was resolved by pushing the switch all the way into the slot. No other issues.
OMG! Thank you so much for this video! Luckily I'm only a few miles from a Subaru dealership when my car locked up and couldn't get my car from park to drive cuz all three of these warning indicators came on, ABS, Hill assist, and Track control. I got the part for only $22 and replaced it and now I have a car that moves!!!

Just getting myself a 2008 Impreza, and it's got the same lights coming on. Did a search after I got home from looking at it and found this. Thanks man!

There’s a recall for this brake light switch. Free recall replacement. Subaru has been having bad luck with the supplier of this BLS. Like 10 updated already!! Thanks. So adjusting you turn clockwise?
Hey, i have same problem with my sti 13, i went to the dealership they took the fault code and it was 52 thats mean Motor/Motor relay. But my question is that, did you took the fault code before you change this brake light relay? I am wondering just to know if it can be the same code as mine and it worked with that anyway. Not too cool to buy a new Abs motor pump for 1000$ when it can be fixed cheeper. Thanks for the help.
Hello this is Luis again I took it out it the same for a 2015 my wife pulled it she doesn't remember if it was in all the way does it stick out just a bit
How can you tell if the switch needs replaced rather than just being adjusted as you mentioned? My 2014 Impreza's 3 lights came on for a couple days, but now they are off again.
If they came on and turned back off. It's only a matter of time before they come on and stay on. I would just replace the part as it's very inexpensive.
Just changed this now. Started the car and the lights are still there. Adjusted the screw to go deeper or shallower, but did not fix the issue, sadly. Out $32! Guess will have to take it to the shop. Maybe it's a sensor or something else.
Do you know if this part is also in the 2014 Impreza touring model ? These 3 lights + the check engine just lit up after pick up my car from a bearing repair. It's not related ?
What if u have the hill assist and traction control light on but instead of the abs light, it’s the srs light? I read that it could be the clockspring but not sure. I also did what u did in this vid but nothing new happened, still have the light on.
I have a 09 impreza sport. All 3 lights on. I changed the sensor. I played with it locking it in at different points. The lights are still on any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is that they sold me a bad sensor
Hi Thanks for the video! I got the part and installed it this morning then drove it around and everything worked great. I went to go somewhere this evening and my battery is completely dead. Do you think it has to do with how I installed it??
If you don't install the piece far enough in to depress the button, your brake lights will stay on permanently, even when the car is off, so, this is what drained your battery. If you have to do it, check your brake lights after installation, if they are still on, re-install the switch a little deeper, keep going till the lights are off.

any thoughts on the AT OIL TEMP light flashing in addition to all of these lights solid, just randomly came on my dash on my drive home from work today :( could this still be the issue?
@sdh711 did you happen to test this? Exact same issue on my 2014 Forester. AT OIL TEMP light flashing with the other lights solid. The lights came on soon after I had accident repair and they replaced my brake light. I’m open to any ideas besides giving thousands of dollars to my local subaru idiots (idiots because they recently did an oil change on my wife’s brand new Outback and there was burning oil and smoke out of the engine for 2 days, they said “my bad, it should be good but may still smoke a few days”)
This is happening to me all of sudden. I have a 2016 ford fusion . Can I do what you just showed me? Is there something wrong with my breaks is that why I get these light on the dash or is it just a sensor not working anymore?
Evana Peinado it should just be the sensor! This happens on cars other then just a subaru. Just look under your dash next to your break pedal and you should find the sensor

Luis Dominguez for the newer impreza I'm not 100% sure. Check under your dash in this spot and see if the sensor is there. If it is, that's the first thing I would try.
Great video. One suggestion is to mark the old switch before taking it out. Then put next to new switch and mark to know how far to insert.

There’s a recall for this brake light switch. Free recall replacement. Subaru has been having bad luck with the supplier of this BLS. Like 10 updated already!! Thanks. So adjusting you turn clockwise?
You essentially have to pull the sensor out or put it back in depending on where the positioning is at.
I had this trouble. It was the fuse for the power port (cigarette lighter). Took me two weeks to figure it out.
Thank you for sharing
Hey, i have same problem with my sti 13, i went to the dealership they took the fault code and it was 52 thats mean Motor/Motor relay. But my question is that, did you took the fault code before you change this brake light relay? I am wondering just to know if it can be the same code as mine and it worked with that anyway. Not too cool to buy a new Abs motor pump for 1000$ when it can be fixed cheeper. Thanks for the help.
Hello this is Luis again I took it out it the same for a 2015 my wife pulled it she doesn't remember if it was in all the way does it stick out just a bit
you can kind of just play with it and see how it should sit. if your breaks feel light, push it in farther
You’d have to check with the dealer on that one
I'm just going thru that on my 17 forester all 3 lights just turn on that should be it just that sensor needs to change and it'll be good to go?
Correct
What if u have the hill assist and traction control light on but instead of the abs light, it’s the srs light? I read that it could be the clockspring but not sure. I also did what u did in this vid but nothing new happened, still have the light on.
That I'm not sure on.
2013 Impreza automatic 3 same three lights on , but don't let me drive forward or back...? You think it's couse the sensor?
Yes this should fix your issue!
I have a 09 impreza sport. All 3 lights on. I changed the sensor. I played with it locking it in at different points. The lights are still on any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is that they sold me a bad sensor
make sure that the sensor is far enough in to be engaged and then when you push on the pedal it would be disengaged.
‘15 wrx sti, my hill assist, traction and VDC lights are on, would the replacing the brake light switch still be the solution?
I would start with this
Hi Thanks for the video! I got the part and installed it this morning then drove it around and everything worked great. I went to go somewhere this evening and my battery is completely dead. Do you think it has to do with how I installed it??
also, I have a 2013 Subaru impresa wagon. I got the part from the dealership and they verified that it was the correct part for my model.
that shouldnt have anything to do with the sensor
hmm okay, I tried to jump the car as well and the battery is completely drained so that didn't work. Any suggestions
I would take out your battery and go get it tested. see if your battery is bad
If you don't install the piece far enough in to depress the button, your brake lights will stay on permanently, even when the car is off, so, this is what drained your battery. If you have to do it, check your brake lights after installation, if they are still on, re-install the switch a little deeper, keep going till the lights are off.
Have a similar issue were just the hill assist light came on. Do you think changing out that part you swapped out would fix it?
I just noticed your comment, just my hill assist light is coming on did you ever figure out what was the problem??
I also have the issue in my 2014 Subaru STI and Hill assist light is on only. Buying the clutch switch and hopefully it works.
did any of you guys ever fix it lol i have the same issue!
@@__Square found the fix for mine. There’s a row of fused hidden next to fuse box under dash to the right . Change out the fuse for backup lights. My backup camera and backup lights started working too.
@@dailydistruction thank you for the response my reverse lights also don't work, and my hill assist goes off and on all the time which is almost dangerous when I expect it to work and it doesn't lol. I'm not very handy when it comes to electrical... if you don't mind, does any fuse work? which one did you use? Thanks again I've spent so long trying to figure out what is wrong. I've been hesitant to go to my dealer because I don't wanna overpay!
Thank you, this worked on my 2014 Crosstrek.
Were there any codes before you changed this?
Just the dash lights
This is great but how long do these switches last? I replaced one less than 12 months ago and now the lights are back on!
Paul Eddleston I have no idea how long they are supposed to last.
1:30 why would you need to adjust how far it goes in?
Because if it's not the correct length. Then your break lights won't turn off.
@@801Garage exactly. Why not just have one fixed setting? Maybe the part is shared with other models with different pedal placement I only asked because i was genuinely wondering if there was something to it
@@jamesbondo5895 I mean it makes sense tho. The sensor being pushed in and out. Indicted when to turn on and off your lights
Hi i know im late to the party but if its the switch then do you not have brake lights working either?
I’ve seen both. Where the lights themselves fail or others that they still work
I have same issue on my Acura. How do I get the open under the dash and are they all located there?
I'm not 100 % for the Acura. Refer to your dealer with questions
Thanks. Appreciate your response.
I have this same issue on a 2019 ram Promaster 2500 Cargo Van. Think it’s the same fix?
You could try! It’s a cheap attempt
@@801Garage thanks
This recently started happening on my Forester plus I've noticed my Cruise Control button won't turn on the cruise control function.
Did you get it fixed?
This switch is part of a recall. Contact your local Subaru service dept with VIN and you can get it fixed free and by certified techs..
I bought my 2012 sti at 45k it’s at 50k now and just the hill assist light with the car on the slope is on. i haven’t looked much into it as i don’t drive the car everyday everything appears to be running smoothly and correctly the car is tuned on stage 2? I just ordered the sensor could this be the cause ?
hi i know its been 3 years but did the sensor ever fix the issue, i have the same car and issue you described with only the hill start assist coming off and on all the time. Thanks!
any thoughts on the AT OIL TEMP light flashing in addition to all of these lights solid, just randomly came on my dash on my drive home from work today :( could this still be the issue?
Honestly that’s a first that I heard of those two issues together. I’m sorry but I wouldn’t be able to comment there
@sdh711 did you happen to test this? Exact same issue on my 2014 Forester. AT OIL TEMP light flashing with the other lights solid. The lights came on soon after I had accident repair and they replaced my brake light. I’m open to any ideas besides giving thousands of dollars to my local subaru idiots (idiots because they recently did an oil change on my wife’s brand new Outback and there was burning oil and smoke out of the engine for 2 days, they said “my bad, it should be good but may still smoke a few days”)
Is there a particular length/distance the switch needs to be inserted into the holder? Or it doesn't matter? Thank you!
Yes. Far enough that the switch is depressed when you push on your brake pedal
Would this be the same way for a 2017 subaru WRX? And same item #?
I’m not sure on the item number. I would confirm with the dealership
Does anyone know if 2016 Ford Escape has this same switch? My problem is the same
This is happening to me all of sudden.
Hello name is Luis I'm g aging the same trouble on my 2015 Impreza would it be the same fix my warranty just ended over 36,000 miles dealer wants 115.00 hour to diagnose not even to fix the problem please help!!! thanks
Luis Dominguez for the newer impreza I'm not 100% sure. Check under your dash in this spot and see if the sensor is there. If it is, that's the first thing I would try.
