Great job, as always..! I so appreciate your insight and imagination with the various characters and plots of these famous stories... Keep up the good work..! I look forward to your videos very much... :):)
Hugh Laurie might’ve been a good fit for Holmes twenty or thirty years ago, but it’s important to note that he’s already played Sherlock Holmes, in a sense - on House. There’s tons of similarities between the two series: House vs. home (Holmes), Bonnie Wilson vs. John Watson, etc. The even both live at 221B Baker Street.
The creator of House actually stated that House is based on Holmes (and to Conan Doyle's true to life inspiration to Holmes, his mentor Dr. Bell) So it's really not a coincidence (even House's drug addiction)
Kinda fun - can't comment too much as I'm not good with actors (remembering them, I mean) though I think you're right about Charles Dance. I'll look forward to the Tey review though
For Poirot I'd suggest Rory Kinnear. He is excellent in both dramatic and comedic roles so he definitely has the range for Poirot. Some might suggest that he is too young (he's 46), but he is older now than Suchet was when he first started playing the role, so I'm sure he'd cope. Finally - and I first want to put on record that I think he is a very good looking man - his head is exactly the right shape!
@@summationgathering The more I think about it the better I think Macfadyen would be. Handsome? Tick. Posh? Tick. Quietly brilliant? Tick. Also his wife, Keeley Hawes, would make a pretty good Agatha Troy, so there's a package deal in the offing as well!
I could see it... I didn't really take into consideration prosthetics. It's probably something that many Poirots need. They all have fake mustaches already.
John Goodman would be great since he can do the seriousness, the ego, the humorous parts of Wolfe's personality. Ryan Gosling is a good choice for Archie. Maybe you can cast Kramer the next time around. Dave Bautista gave a very good performance in "Knock on the Cabin Door", so he could definitely be a lead in a film. I would love Charles Dance as Professor Moriarty; I think that Sam Neil would be great too.
I like the choice of Gemma Jones for Miss Marple. A possible choice for Miss Silver might be Miriam Margoyles (she does a great job "channeling" Margaret Rutherford in the Miss Fisher series). I contend that with the last name "Silver" Miss Silver's forebears would have been Jewish whatever religion she practices. And I had often thought of Alan Cumming for Sherlock. I'm sure he can lose the Scottish accent and he has the right sort of puckish physicality which was a strong point with both Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. I do like Pam Ferris as Ariadne Oliver.
I considered Daniel Craig for a lot of the inspectors. I couldn't decide on one for him and I felt others were just a little bit better but I absolutely would love Daniel Craig as Alleyn. Alleyn has a lot of spy/thriller stuff sometimes and his James Bond skills would come in handy.
Pam Ferris, Toby Stephens, Matthew Goode, Gwendollne Christie, Tom Hiddleston, Gemma Jones: chef's kiss. I was a little biased against Gemma because my favourite memory of her is the emphatically working class Duchess of Duke Street, but she has great depth as an actress, and could pull off both the fluffy vagueness and the dangerous adversary. I get why you chose Jim Broadbent for Poirot, because he is a great actor who can play all sides of the role. But he is a tall, husky man, and I guess I'm looking at Poirot through a Suchet rather than a Ustinov lens. Did you consider Tim Spall (see Mr. Turner and Topsy-Turvy, especially)? Toby Jones could also be a good choice. He's played a huge variety of roles, both lead and supporting. The Detectorists is my fave. He was Ratchett on Suchet's Orient Express.
I didn't consider Tim Spall, no. Poirot was so hard to cast. I do suspect one would have to lean more into more Ustinov than Suchet. I didn't even think of Toby Jones for Poirot but that would also be a good choice.
You're not alone apparently. I think Jim Parsons could nail part of Ellery very well but Ellery also has several Archie Goodwin-esque quality to him that I think he's a poor fit for. A lot of it happens off page, but it gets mentioned a lot how Ellery is always out partying and womanizing.
Peter Dinklage? Does his rather extreme physical peculiarity qualify him for a Poirot? Jim Broadbent would be excellent. Bit tall though? Hastings is easy - lots of gentlemanly actors around who can do decent but dumb - Hugh Grant in an earlier age would have been perfect. But a black Holmes? That well may be the way things are going - we already got a black Arsene Lupin in the French tv series - tho it doesn’t mean it’s the right way. Historical accuracy is still important to some people.
Peter Dinklage was on the list because of the audiobook, which I have not listened, to but when I thought of him and Poirot, I could see it. I wouldn't be opposed to a black Holmes because I think Sherlock Holmes is a character who has so many iterations, I don't think that kind of change would be unwarranted. My general view of this situation is that iconic fictional characters should be treated in the same way one would cast for actual historical people. I think Sherlock is a bit of an exception, although it would be jarring (as in unrealistic) to see set in Victorian times.
Oh that's not a bad choice at all. I did not consider Dutch actors. I did look at French actors but then I shuddered at casting a frenchman as Poirot. Poirot would not approve of that.
Actually he's Danish. But I've heard Danish is called the French of the Nordic languages because they don't prounounce all the letters clearly, so there's that.
I think Pam Ferris as Mrs Oliver is Inspired Casting; I like Zoe Wanamaker as an actress, but have never thought she was that good a fit for Mrs Oliver. When I went to the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay this year I saw a talk with Mark Aldridge, and someone asked him about any actresses he would like to see play Miss Marple in the future. He said that there have been attempts to produce a series with Gemma Jones as Miss Marple for a few years, but they've come to nothing. I agree that Gemma would make a great Marple.

Thanks!
I can see Inspector Japp waving his fist and screaming at the sun: “THE ONE TIME, I ACTUALLY WANT YOU TO SHINE, YOU GO AWAY!”
Oh absolutely.

Yeah that did come to mind as well, whether or not Hugh Laurie has already played Sherlock Holmes. He's come close enough, I would say.
The creator of House actually stated that House is based on Holmes (and to Conan Doyle's true to life inspiration to Holmes, his mentor Dr. Bell)

Oh, and to me the ideal Inspector Alleyn is Matthew Macfadyen.
Having an egg-shaped head was absolutely something I looked for in a Poirot. Rory Kinnear would be a good choice.
I considered Matthew Macfadyen for a few people but Alleyn wasn't one of them.

I could see Colin Farrell playing Poirot after seeing him as The Penquin. Prosthetics also go a long way in making an actor get into character.

I would have loved to cast Sam Neill but he does have cancer and I'm not sure if he is still acting or if he retired.
this was fun
Thanks!

I didn't include the detective in this video because the it was running long but I considered Alan Cumming for Harley Quin.
Jean Claud van Damme as Hercule Poirot. 😂😂😂😂
It'd be funny. But no.
I've been trying to figure out who Colin Firth could possibly play all day lol. I also wondered if Daniel Craig could play Inspector Alleyn
Interesting choices all around, although I wish you hadn't said Jim Parsons as Ellery Queen...... because now I want to SEE that. LOL.
Thanks!

Hear me out.
Poirot = Tom Holland.
Holmes = The Rock.
Miss Marple = Zendaya.
Nice video, btw.

I'd love to throw Mads Mikkelsen into the ring for Poirot, I know he's Dutch, not Belgian but I think he'd be interesting

Helena Bonham Carter would be box office if they could get her to do it.
For which character? I did think of her but I didn't see a character to cast her for.
@@summationgathering She's about to play Lady Caterham in the new Netflix version of Seven Dials Mystery actually
@@summationgathering sorry, Marple - hbc is a mistress of disguise and acting

I did not know Gemma Jones was under consideration to play Miss Marple. I would be ecstatic if just one of my casting choices comes true.

Is this Kenneth Branagh? Tom Holland could probably play a young Poirot tbh. I wouldn't like it but I could see it.
