@@RickBeato Hey Rick, what are your thoughts on putting out a solo album? I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in welcoming that as a possibility. With your reinvigorated chops and musical experience & maturity, it seems like it could be a good time to consider. It would be nice to hear what you would do with the sheer diversity of influence you've had and the in built production advantage. A guitar centric album of jazz, classical and rock influenced originals and / or standards would get my pledge. Thanks for what you do Rick, really appreciate your enthusiasm, passion and generosity.

    Rick,
I'm 55 years old and watching your channel ("What makes this song great?" and training exercises) got me back into practicing again. Your '5 things every beginner guitarist should know' episode has me relearning previous guitar instruction and, when thinking about songs I think are great, has me actively listening for those elements in practice and for the love of the music. I have grown from you and your generosity and I hope you continue to help us new beginners learn, love, and play. I ask myself, I wonder what voice I have through my guitars? How can I embrace and make my own the great blues guitarists who have come before me? How do I actively listen for new inspirations? And finally, what would make my music great? Thank you!
I just bought your book - thank you!

Rick, thank you for sharing that story. For YEARS I berated myself for abandoning my violin (my first instrument) for three years while in music school. I was at a private school (ALMOST went to ithaca, actually, but I said NO to SNOW) in NY, I returned home to the local Uni bc money. Said state Uni has NO string program, and my other instrument was voice (classical/theatre). So I put my poor violin in the closet while I finished up at school. In place of Violin, I decided to ALSO study jazz & jazz vocal style. I became a better musician bc of that choice. And picked up my violin 3 years later to see it in a COMPLETELY different light. Now I play 5 instruments (AND sing in various genres). Sometimes that old adage "When a door closes, a window opens" becomes a life-changing reality. Your story is so much more enthralling, but gave me so much validation. THANK YOU.

Rick, I had given up on myself as a guitarist and almost even thrown in the towel as someone who wanted to see himself as a musician. Your teaching and enthusiasm have given me a tough love smack in the head to keep reaching to grow and learn.
You lend new life to a kind of mysticism of rock, blues, and jazz to which I subscribed in my youth but in which I more recently-quite foolishly-had started to lose faith.
Thanks for the smack in the head. 🎸🙏🏻

I've only been playing (at least 5 days a week for at least 40 minutes) for about 14 months... and I do find that an occasional 4-5 day break sort of refreshes me. I focus better and have more patience for repetition after taking a break.

I don't know about 5 or 10 years but a weeks-plus break can definitely help. Not only with guitar. There is some science behind this, something about letting neural pathways grow. I can't find the research right now but it is indeed a real phenomenon.

I went 18 years between gigs and rebuilding my music. I did not pick up a guitar for 18 years. My musical voice was still there but the story I had to tell had changed. My vocabulary was there same but my ear had changed. It’s a broken story, but it’s easy to create new stuff because all been pent up waiting to be released. Music is SO fun now!!! I’m 58’ and have SO much to say. Music is wonderful.

  • @WillieSurvive1
    @WillieSurvive1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I admire people my age and older who still have a passion for playing music. I don’t know how they can keep that alive.
Guitar was my life from age 14-23. Then it became an on/off thing from age 24 til 39-40. I’m now 47, and though I’ve kept my most prized guitars with the most sentimental value, the idea of me trying to “be a guitarist” these days clashes so much with my self-concept of husband and father, I just can’t reconcile the two. Every once in a purple moon I’ll plug in and mess around for a little while, or I’ll pick up my acoustic; but those moments are few and far between, definitely not enough to build my skill back up to where it used to be, let alone surpass that. In my youth, I never imagined I’d be one of those guys who “used to play.” I used to shake my head in bewilderment when I’d hear about guys like that.

Aha! yes Rick, your steady progress is clearly evident. How practice & focus on goals really does pay off. Our stories & ages are almost parallel in detail. Except you stayed on the music path, me into bussiness. I had similar experiences rebooting, my music after a 27 yr absence I believed was permanant. Now playing better than before, which I too found remarkable. Stay with it SIR. I love your short, modest & honest to the point type of recent videos. Great work, thank you. I had a bad reaction to an antibiotic a few years ago. All the skin on my hands and feet blistered and fell off. Couldn’t walk or handle anything for a while. Then when I could my skin was sooooooo sensitive and all my 10+ years of calluses were gone. It took a looooooong time to get back to where I was because of the pain and then discouraging rust. Now I’m going beyond where I ever was before with the help of your inspiring videos! Keep it up Rick!!

Dude parallel early paths with bass as my primary. Played every genre but jazz was my favorite. Did some Big Band stuff and some guitar/piano, bass, vox. Life finally got in the way and my dad passed during this time and I lost passion. You're amazing. I pick up my fiddle or banjo or guitar and it's like I never ever played. Speed is gone and can't even remember easy fingerings.

Playing guitar was my life from about 12 to 18 when I went to university. I got busy with studies and girls and the life and yadda yadda. I’ve always had the guitars laying around and would pick them up and even go through phases of weeks or months playing again but never making progression and overall absolutely losing my chops. I’m 30 now and taking more seriously than even when I was a teenager. I’m a old but new student of actual music now and I’m loving having a new (old) passion and skill to work on at this age.

I like this idea of building a new structure out of the ruins of the old edifice. I've written several novels that seemed, when I wrote them, to be great, but then if I let them sit untouched for a year or two and then go back to them, the glaring faults in the writing/expression become clear and I can make improvements based on my newer perspective and knowledge.

This one hit a home run for me Rick. Playing since I was 16, did the bands thing, taught (junior school) for 5 years, a combination of raising kids and guitar burn out stopped me playing (other than occasionally noodling) for 10 years. Thought I was the only one. Have started playing properly again. Saddened by the loss of chops, but I know a lot more theory that did it for my first 20 years. Just purchased the Beato Book + YT Bundle.

Oh wow, Rick, thank you. We're about the same age. I grew up in a very musical family, playing violin for 15 years before finally rebelling, quitting the orchestras, and picking up guitar. Played many hours a day for about 10 years. Then, something happened. Moved to the west coast, had a family, etc. Now, it's been 25 years since I've done any real practice. You've motivated me to pick it up again.... today. Cheers!

I played for 20 years straight from the day I learned my first chord. I couldn't get enough. I played at least a couple hours a day or more. I discovered pain medication and went for about 15 years without playing. I would play a little here and there, but only enough to show somebody I could play a little. As of tomorrow I will be 4 years clean and sober and going on 3 years of playing daily. I found my mojo I guess. One of my biggest inspirations for picking up the guitar again is Mick Mars. He had to slowly get back in the game after his own issues with pain meds. I'm so glad I started playing again.

Interesting you figured out now that it is easier to play that way. Classical guitar has taught that forever but I guess it ain't cool. Playing the classical posture is easier because the elevated fretboard allows for a less bent wrist. The more bend the harder it is and the more likely you'll get tendonitis.

Thank you so much for posting this! I taught myself to play guitar in 1980 and kept playing until 2003 and then stopped. 17 years. The calluses fell off my finger tips years ago. Anyway, I've been thinking about picking up my axe again and wondering how long it would take to get back up to speed, so I found your post today helpful. Thanks!

Like Les Paul, I suffered an injury to my left arm and it still does not straighten. I had to re-learn at age 25 and as I re-learned the guitar, the only way I could bend my arm and reach the low E string was to hold it in that manner. I had already performed for 12 years and was considered a shredder, but when I re-learned I incorporated classical elements into my country lead, so now I can play almost anything, but I still have to hold the guitar that way.

I hear a lotta 80s era Eric Johnson in that one Instagram video.
I stopped playing for about 16 years(after 15 or 16 years of playing professionally)and got back into it and had to go through the same reinvention(I was sounding really old and stale and horribly dated). It took me about 6 or 7 years to get my footing again but I have to say that now at 55 I have never played better in my life. Plus, I've learned that even when you stop you learn how to hear music as a listener again so that when you start over again it stays with you.

I started playing at 14. I only knew power chords and nirvana jams when i stopped at 19 due to theft of my guitar. I picked it up at age 33. I regret not going back sooner. From 33 to 37 i learned more chords, progressions and took formal lessons. From age 37 to 42 i learned more theory, scales modes and more melodic improv. I still have the what ifs but i do like where I'm at and i know I'm right where i need to be. Thanks for teaching me Rick. Your TH-cam pupil, David

I'm just starting again after a five-year break. First 3.5 years I just had nothing in me (depressed I guess). Then one day went to sleep and woke up in my room which had caught on fire. Every single thing burnt to ashes, including my guitars. Just last week I finally saved enough to buy a new guitar. There is definitely a lot in me now, new music waiting for me to create it. I'm still sleeping on the floor, and only other musicians can understand why I would buy a guitar before buying a bed. :)

I'd love to see a video on how you got your chops back. The nitty-gritty of the: practice/drills/abject boredom/grind/embracing the suck. Another video idea that I think you are qualified to do: Personally, I think musicians who learn to play by ear first and then learn to read music, theory and harmony are better musicians than people like me who are put in front of a music lesson book and taught to pluck the dots from the strings. Reading music, theory and harmony are easy skills to learn compared to hearing the difference between close intervals (I struggle to do it). Your comments and insights would be most interesting considering your background.
And if there's another COVID lockdown, it'd give me something to do.

I started playing at 14 and stopped around 24. I practiced at least 4 hours a day every day then stopped playing for 17 years. I just started playing again about 10 months now. I play when I can and I’m having a lot of fun when I do.
Secret is not to try to set the world on fire and just enjoy. That’s what it’s all about.
