I would like to thank you for uploading this video. I do not remember how I saw this video, but when I saw the thumbnail I thought, "An animated Bismarck? Eh. I'll check it out." Boy am I glad I did. Thanks to you, I discovered that I liked High School Fleet. Then thanks to High School Fleet, I discovered Girls und Panzer. Which is even better! Once again, Thank You!

One of the things I love about Girls und Panzer is how despite being an alternate history/science fiction anime, this show has more historical accuracies than many Hollywood movies. The timeline for the show is some time in the future, and assumes the sea evel is higher then the current tallest building of Yokosuka. The ships are modern recreations and mostly automated, and are meant for glorified Coast Guard duties.... the assumption is that if it's only women in the Blue Mermaids, from the sailor swabbing the decks all the way up the chain of command, the ships will not be used to wage war.

Yamato was also known as the hotel ship due to the lack of action it saw in the pacific theater. So it being in drydock during the series is no surprise to me lol.

@@Honkaiamv If you are interesred in WW2 Ships as a whole (which is very likely considering you made this AMV) I suggest taking a look at the TH-cam Channel "Drachinifel", he is making awesome content about WW1 and WW2 Ships, with a short guide for a ship (or class) every week, as well as Wednesday specials and a Q&A Saturdays. He knows his stuff, debunks myths, and proves that almost anything wich makes you go "why did they build it like that, thats dumb" in ship construction/usage has a reason behind it. He has studied naval Design for Years now
Bismarck by Sabaton is hands down my fav song of all time. I have seen various videos. This one brought about some real intensity that I think could have been so much better. I liked it. But some of the scenes with the anime crew were powerful. Id like to see this video done again with much more attention to detail. Good job though.

The problem for a WWII batlleship against a modern guided missile destroyer, would be to be able to get into firing range, as modern radars, surveillance satellites, and sea patrol airplanes would have the old battleship constantly located and pinpointed, and attacked from over the horizon with ASMs like Harpoons, Exocets and Tomahawks while the modern destroyer maintains always a safe distance.
On the other side, if it happened that, somehow, the battleship could get into close range... 127 mm single gun of a modern destroyer can not affect vital points of a battleship, although the high firing rate with 90%+ accuracy could make possible (maybe...) to attack sensible points like targeting optics (surgical shots).
Antiship missiles like Harpoons and Exocets, I think they would be of little effect against a battleship, the typical around 200 kg warhead (no more than a 280 mm gun round and not really meant to pierce heavy armor) is much smaller than the massive rounds a Yamato class can fire (1460 kg per projectile!!! More than 13 metric tons of rounds per barrage!!!).
I suppose that antisubmarine torpedoes could be fired also against a surface target, and probably with 100% accuracy, but again they usually have smaller warheads than pure bigger antiship torpedoes (it is needed a smaller warhead to cause severe damage to a submarine), and the battleship has also underwater armor...
In the end, given the occassion, I think it would be a matter of luck for the modern destroyer, that would do better trying to put distance in between (no much speed difference)... One or two direct hits by 457 mm rounds, and bye-bye. The battleship probably gets damage, over waterlevel and under it, but I suspect it could survive without sinking to more than 8 Harpoons and 8 ASW torpedoes, and 100+ 127 mm hits (the real Yamato was hit by 20 antiship torpedoes, apart from more than 40 heavy bombs). Even an ASM Tomahawk has a warhead of about 400 kg, again much less than a 457 mm gun round and less also than a 406 mm round and a 381 mm round, from which Yamato-class was designed to be "inmune". The Tomahawk can be equipped with a tactical nuclear warhead of up to about 150 Kt, but as far as I know, only the land attack version (and it would be very unusual for a destroyer nowadays to carry a nuclear warhead)

Fun fact: I conceptualized a ship that defies the "Half to most of the ship's firepower is in front" stereotype and put most of the guns behind the bridge. You know why? So that it has the element of surprise. It can easily be mistaken for a Deutschland class Heavy Cruiser, but it's a Battle Cruiser.
Edit: Just realized that destroyers also defy that stereotype
But the front is a better place for the firepower. That way you don't show your steering and propulsion to the enemy.

@45Kimber1911A1 Modern DDs' *most powerful* anti-ship missiles pack warheads of less than 500 lbs and simply can't pierce the belt or deck armor of a BB. Modern DDs have roughly the same top speed as those Fast BBs of WWII, so they're not outrunning each other. No modern frigate, destroyer or cruiser could stand against a battleship.
@45Kimber1911A1 Pick an anti-ship cruise missile, any one of them in service across the world. None have the power to penetrate the belt or deck armor of a battleship. The one exception is the P-700 Granit, and its incredible size (about the same as a fighter jet) limits it to being deployed only by Kirov class cruisers, of which only one remains in service.
Simply put, modern anti-ship missiles can't beat BB armor. That's not a game thing; it's reality.
@45Kimber1911A1 Neither missile you mentioned has the ability to aim for certain parts of a target; neither missile you mentioned has the ability to target a moving ship. Both missiles are GPS/INS guided and thus must be targeted at a *grid coordinate*. The -158 has a terminal guidance that activates and can seek out a specific target once it reaches its designated grid, but the target has to be in said grid when the missile finally arrives. For a ship underway, it simply won’t be in the grid by the time the missile arrives. Also, the Tomahawk is strictly a land attack missile for that reason. Great for stationary things, useless against anything moving. The anti-ship variant of the -109 was retired in the 90s.
BBs could easily suffer the loss of their entire bow section and stern section and remain both afloat and operational. This is thanks to the reserve buoyancy and integrity of their water-tight, thickly armored citadels. In ship to ship combat, every crewman is in the citadel (or above it in the superstructure). Neither the AGM-158, nor the Tomahawk pack sufficient punch to destroy or break through to the *vital parts* of a BB. The 900lbs of explosive in a -158 doesn’t pose a serious threat to a BB if it can’t pierce the armor, which it can’t. If you can’t pierce the armor, you can’t rupture the hull or compromise its integrity, meaning your hit will do only minor damage outside the ship, but doesn’t pose any serious threat to the ship or its crew. Your line of thinking (use high explosives to negate the benefit of armor) was tested by battleships against other battleships in combat at the battle of Tsushima. It was a resounding failure. High explosive warheads are basically useless if they can’t get through the armor and damage the inside.
WWII battleships were slinging 1800 - 3200 lb armor piercing shells, with impact *forces 6 - 10x greater* than the -158’s 900lb warhead at subsonic speed. The USS South Dakota took three hits from warheads that were 500lbs heavier and impacting at about *twice* the speed of the -158’s impact speed and she bounced all three. But you think the -158 could seriously damage it... The USS Stark-a small, 4000-ton frigate with no armor at all-took two direct hits from vaunted *Exocet anti-ship missiles*, survived and returned to port. But go ahead and tell me all about how an anti-ship missile is gonna sink a battleship.
As for the torpedoes, modern destroyers don’t carry anti-ship torpedoes. Modern destroyers carry much smaller, specialized anti-sub torps, no bigger than 13-14”, with warheads of 100lbs or less. That’s not breaking a ship’s keel. Said torps are for killing enemy subs and not much else. @45Kimber1911A1 The improvements to guidance systems and increases of range don't negate their lack of punching power. They still can't break the armor, thus can't rupture the hull citadel, thus don't pose a credible threat to the survival of a battleship.
Nothing changes the fact that it's *only* the magic of screenwriting that allowed those destroyers / frigates to defeat the battleship.
