  • Joe talks frankly in this touching, emotional excerpt about the actors from the show who are no longer with us, including fulfilling his promise to discuss why Michael O'Hare, who played Captain Sinclair, really left the show. He also discusses Jeff Conaway, who played Zach, Andreas Katsulas who played G'Kar, and Richard Biggs, who played Dr. Stephen Franklin. Some touching moments.

I'm rewatching season one right now, and for the first time since O'Hare died. I find myself paying closer attention to his performance than in the past, and knowing now what he was going through, it's remarkable how little of that shows in the episodes. There are occasion awkward moments (his angry reaction to news of Ben-Zayn's investigation is forced and unconvincing), but his characterisation of Sinclair as compassionate, haunted and zen-like never wavers. Knowing now that he and Jerry Doyle did not get along (to put it mildly) makes me respect their performances even more. There's more of a visible apprehensiveness in Claudia Christian's interactions with him (she didn't speak fondly of him in her autobiography) but it does dovetail with Ivanova's remoteness. It's tremendously sad to learn what Michael was going through, and that his last years seem to have been quite grim. The flipside of this is to learn of the love his friends and family had for him, and the sheer amount of support they provided. I hope he knew how much he was loved.

FWIW, I did not know that O'Hare and Doyle did not get along.

Thank you for sharing with us. Last weekend was one of the most moving I have ever been involved in. It was amazing to be at this panel. Too many of the B5 family members are gone, they are truly missed. All I can say is thank you to all of you for all the joy you brought to the fans' lives and the wonderful story you told.

Makes me cry and at least we know what was happening with poor Michael. They are so much missed, all of them. I love JMS and B5 forever.

i saw Rick annually at a con for several years. He always ran the auction VERY successfully, raised tons of money for the con, willing to meet and greet and answer questions, always seemed to remember everyone and was happy to see us all. He was very open and honest about his hearing problem, and found ways to compensate when he had trouble hearing questions from the audience (sometimes it wasn't how loud the questioner was, but the frequency of their voice). I found out about his death in a grocery store checkout line (the cover of Soap Opera Digest - he was on Days of our Lives for many years). I grieve for all of these deaths, but more for him that the others - maybe because I was acquainted with him, maybe because I loved him as Marcus in DOOL before he played Franklin, maybe because of his youth, maybe because of his very young children (2 and 4 at the time). There is still great sadness in my heart at his having to leave us too soon.

I was also a huge fan of his because of his role on DOOL. Was so excited to see him on Babylon 5.

How many guys from this show died way too young? Sad. Every one of them were awesome in their roles.

To be remembered so well. JMS did a great service to all of these people who passed. Unselfishly, it seems. They live on in the films and they love on in this story. To know these people more than we do ... but this is good. the circle is complete.

Poor guy, he was great in his role. I assumed he just had another role or something.
I was wondering why he didn't end up in any other big roles. I only now just found out he passed away.
Very selfless of him to push the series to continue.
My condolences to his friends and family.

What a wonderful segment. Thanks for posting this. It would have been nice for JMS to have said something about Tim Choate, who played Zathras. But, perhaps he didn't know Tim well enough to be able to comment on him.

So glad to finally know this. I never finished the series because I never could stand the Sheridan character, and didn't like the way he just replaced the character the story was initially built around. Now I can go back and, i think, finally watch it all the way through.
So very sad what he went through, and tragic how many of these talented people are already gone.
