I severely recommend getting a 36 degree locking piece for michael machines and putting it into this. It will reduce your recoil drastically and make it suppressor ready. Its like tuning an ar gas block.
The part is called a G17

Also, a heavy buffer goes a LONG way for these.
You would be amazed at how smooth they get.

In Germany, I was allowed to use the G3 during my time in the Bundeswehr. I held this great weapon in my arms while sleeping. During the first target shooting, I won a case of beer. Danke für die schönen Erinnerungen :-)

Just a note from a PTR owner, PTR licensed the HK patents. It's not a simple HK clone, it's an exact, licensed duplicate, built to HK specs. All the parts/accessories are fully compatible. One of its best features is how fast and easy it is to field strip and clean - no tools required! It's one of the best firearms I've ever owned. First time I've seen anyone shoot those 5 gal water bottles long ways like that. Very impressive. I'm going to have to try that one sometime.
Unfortunately, I'm not currently in possession of my PTR, because I live in a state with a little Moussilini for a governor, and was forced to send mind to live with an out of state relative - until SCOTUS gets around to explaining to him what "shall not be infringed" means (or we finally muster enough Republican votes to kick his fat ass to the curb).

The HK&K G3 was pretty much a clone of the Spanish CETME, which predated it. The HK91 was a semiauto civilian version of the G3. The PTR91 is a licensed copy of the HK91.
I have a Century C308, which is pretty much the same as the HK91 and PTR91, but is made using a mix of new parts and some surplus CETME parts.
Don't know what the magazines sell for these days. When I got my C308, they were dirt cheap, and I bought a ton of them. Unissued surplus 20 round magazines were less than $4 each. I also got a huge pile of mag pouches.
Not sure, but I think the PTR, just like the original CETME, has a fluted chamber. You'll probably notice striping on the expended brass casings. Nice thing about that is, they're 100% reliable with steel cased ammo.... which is hard to get now, due to the whole Russia / Ukraine thing.
Some years back, you had the blue plastic .308's all over the place cheap. They were made for use in the G3. You might still be able to get a lightweight training bolt, that will cycle the blue .308's. I don't think you can get the blue .308's anymore, though.

The Norma Whitetail ammo is for hunting deer so that’s why it stayed intact, don’t want lead/jacket fragments in your deer meat. The Hornady Critical Defense is supposed to fragment causing critical damage. Awesome video buddy, keep up the great work!

Back in the late 70's I dropped by my local Firestone dealer, A family friend owned the place and they did a little of everything, besides tires. They did mechanical work on cars, sold appliances, and firearms. My friend had a HK 91 hanging on the wall. My jaw dropped and I started drooling. I asked to see it and he handed me the rifle. It was in pristine condition, I pulled the mag and couldn't find a mark on it. I ask the dealer where he got it and was told he took it in trade, for repairing a transmission on a car. The owner was from another state and broke down while passing through. I asked the price and he told I could have it for what the repair cost was, $400. I passed on it. If I had told the owner I'd give him $20 and paid it off, so much a week, he would have agreed. But I let it pass. I still cry about it, sometimes. At that time, they sold NIB for $800.

I too had always wanted an H&K 91...and years ago got one to evaluate along with an M1A and FAL. I still have the M1A and FAL....the 91 is long gone. It was very accurate and reliable, but compared to the other two rifles the trigger was lousy, the recoil much more harsh and the things are an absolute BEAR to clean. Not to mention it murdered my brass which I reload and back in the early '90's the magazines were scarce and around $100 each so putting up a good supply prohibitively expensive. Sad to say....about two months after I got rid of the 91 the flood of cheap surplus magazines became available and that would have changed the calculation a bit whether to say goodby to the 91. Interesting video as always...thanks!

@@irysh9 When the Berlin Wall fell...and Germany reunited they had a glut of weapons and surplussed a bunch...including G3 mags. So up until then you had to go through H&K for the mags and they were crazy expensive. After the glut of surplus aluminum mags came in...yep..$3 a pop. Made me sick...but the 91 was gone by then so...oh well.

I literally traded one of the 3 SKS rifles I paid $75 each for (they were still packed in Cosmoline when I got all 3 of them too lol) and $125 for it.... Worst part of it all, is I sold it due to being hard up for cash at the time... Man I wish I could go back in time and sell something else instead of this...

I love my PTR, I've done a bit of trigger work and put a muzzle brake on it, it shoots like a dream. I also made some trigger stops in the trigger pack to decrease pre and over travel so it only travels as far as it needs to to fire and reset, it's much faster that way especially on top of the 4.5lb pull weight I got it down to as well as the minimal trigger creep (I cut the hammer hook down to .015" thou tall), she's a real shooter now. The PTR seemed to get a bit of a bad rap when it was introduced but I don't know WTF those people are talking about, it's my favorite rifle now.

Mine stays n a 3in circle at 100 so I can’t complain great battle rifles. Great video if I had the connections like u I would love to try some Federal Gold medal match r a few other real good match ammo 168 r 175 through it to really see what she could do.🎯 nice to know what your weapon is capable of doing and not capable.

Awesome explosion. Water cannot compress, so if you put it up against a solid surface or a heavy object the water will move in the only way it can to escape the pressure. I'll bet there was sonoluminescence as well

For accuracy I've found that my two PTR-91s both seem to like 147gr M80 ball 7.62x51 the best. I get 1.5 to 1.75 inch groups at 100 yards. Mine do not seem to like the heavier .308 loads as much and the groups open up a bit.

As far as I'm concerned this is the top of the heap when talking about battle rifles of the era. I hear a lot of chatter about the recoil impulse and attribute the majority of it to internet parrots repeating what they "heard". Recoil is subjective and of the .308/7.62x51 semi auto rifles I own, my just under 8lb AR10 is the most comfortable shooter with the PTR #2 followed by the DSA/FAL #3 and M1A trailing behind. I'd say the AR and PTR are about equal in the reliability department followed by the FAL and the M1A dead last. As far as accuracy goes it's AR(by a wide margin), PTR, M1A and the DSA way behind(3-4 moa at best). If I had to pick one for their intended use, (although the AR has benefitted massively from development) I'd pick the PTR. It's never once malfunctioned, is very accurate, very shootable, has the best feel in my hands, cheap available mags, shoots any load and I'd say probably best reliability. FAL'feel long and unwieldy, have never been terribly accurate, and I hate the grip angle! The M1A has a certain cool factor but that's it for me. It's big, heavy, average accuracy with loads it likes(wildly inaccurate with ones it doesn't), and not terribly reliable. And the AR10 while extremely accurate, very ergonomic, fairly light and compact, excellent magazines that are reasonably priced and readily available comes with its own set of problems. Mainly being, no standardization! They're all over the map in build quality, price, and design. Parts incompatibility is really the deal breaker. With that said, my current best bang for the buck and favorite has been my Springfield Saint Victor.308. I had everything I want and nothing I don't for a decent price.

Supposedly, the Desert Tech MDX, I think it is is the best .308 battle rifle even though it's a bullpen. DemoRanch had one as did Ian McCollum and they both loved it.

Great rifle. Had one for a year in National sevice. Not allowed for civillians even if you throw a semi auto trigger pack in that has existed for over 50 years Very accurate and easy to clean. I always wondered why the the US Pulled the M14 back into service when they could readily buy or lease G3`s as DMR from friendly countries. MSG90 is an accurised version that was readily available. Even a lmg version of the G# was available.

You gotta check your barrel twist rate and buy ammo accordingly first off i see a lot of newbees throw away perfectly good guns because they have no clue how to match up the bullet weights with the twist rate they have - in a nut shell if you have a short fast T R you need big heavy rounds if you have a long slow T R then you can use greased lightning fast lightweight rounds .

A good basic rifle. You don't need to rock the magazine into it. Just insert it like an AR. Unless you want to prematurely wear out your rifle and magazines.

I will say that owning an Sig 716 AR 10 platform, HK-91a4 😂 it was cheaper than the Sig 716 patrol and I have a Zastava M77. The For the price of the Sig 716 Patrol I could buy almost 3 M77’s and the HK-91 I got back in 2012 for $2600, it’s dated to 1978. 30Hate is expensive and so are the weapons. The PAPM77 I bought brand new and way under cost

The HK clone is nice, but in the US parts and magazines will be easier to source for the AR10 platform. Had a 91 back in the day and sold it, as well as my FAL in favor of the commonality and ubiquity of the AR10 platform. Nice video though, even if our preferences differ.
