I absolutely love the proportions of this fine old car, not to mention the cool background soundtrack. A decent background soundtrack practically never happens in these youtube videos...lol
@@HarryMollyNut ~ You may or may not be surprised, but I couldn't agree with you more. I make the remarks that I do, regarding these old cars because I have been a gear-head just about my entire life. I love physics, etc., so different ways of mechanical motivation have always been interesting to me. I don't have two nickels to rub together myself, so its not like I'm one of those rich pigs. I just like their toys.
I have a 3 x 3m shed with a workbench and my moped i work on. I hsve JUST enough space to work and can barelly turn my ass to do something but when i enter that shed all my problems are gone.
@@HarryMollyNut : Mr.Marx & Co tried to eliminate that mistake in the human condition with the help of a system called communism. As a result, you have a Chinese totalitarian system with a rich "nomen clatura" and less rich millions of tightly controlled poor folks. The North Korean system is even worse. Does this help the sub-Saharan Africans? Humanity seems to be unable to eliminate that problem of birthrights. So we invented that beautiful fairytale called "from rags to riches." And in many cases you forget about the rags and start off with the riches!!!
It is Gorgeous! The Iron lung sound. My grandfather was a WW1 pilot. 21 started to train. He graduated. 20 funerals. It is marvelous to listen to it breathe. Cheers
I've watched this video many times and I still grin like a child every time when I see him launch that old car and just haze the tires!!! How many people own something like this and actually DRIVE it!?
The mosaic of sound this beast exudes..... A fabulously wonderful v8, with eyes closed is very much the low flying airctaft, the whine of the gears and chain, the distinct tyre sound. To experience this in its presence or even drive it would be indescribable. My 83 year old mate has just finished a model A rodaster with a mid 1930s 6 cylinder aircraft engine which is a vehicle of beauty, the v8 Hispano would be so much more..
Just like this wonderful machine, the guy that made this is part of a dying breed that will soon be gone forever. It's so sad that so many young people today can't turn away from their video games to try and learn from guys like this
Not all of us. Been working on old cars for years now. Built my 54 Mercury from a mechanical wreck up to a decently driving car. The big downside is just the price of the cars these days. I cannot afford most of the cars I like
We're still here, my mate is 20, a massive steam fanatic and owns a traction engine. He's a wonderful metal worker and fabricator. I'm also 20, just bought my first car, a Triumph Herald, so starting out in the world of classic cars. And it's something I'm learning from and learning about. And most importantly, I'm learning from and asking people like Tom Walker (the chap in this video) for help and advice. There are still young vintage and classic enthusiasts.
Top notch video, Goodwood... love the external distributor. The fact that the Suiso has survived is just amazing. And the best line was... " If you can't fix it, you're not trying hard enough!"... this was total inspiration!!
This man and his beautiful machine personifies exactly what I love about vintage / historic racing. Thankyou for sharing this excellent story. Magnificent automobile.
As an American who was sold on ''California was the birth of hot rodding'', these cars are enternally fascinating to me. I would love to have one of these in the states. What an experience it must be to drive. My 51' Plymouth is an experience, these must be a whole different level of theatrics. Love it. Respect from the ol' U.S. of A.
This video is different. The subject matter has a heart and soul steeped in history. Congratulations to this gentleman for loving this car enough to keep it going and sharing it with the world. Wish I hadn't watched this, now I will imagine what it is like to drive.
Oh wow, what an amazing vehicle. It would be an honor beyond comprehension to take the wheel of this magnificent veteran. Awesome in every respect. The H-S engine having a flight history is quite a bonus. Mechanical Art....
One can only dream about this stuff. A very nice car and I bet just a tremendous blast to drive it. Well done and please don't crash it. These are treasures for sure. Great video.
The V8 was invented in France by Mr. Lavavasseur in 1902 the engine was named Antoinette, but that H-S 12L V8 is a formidable very early example of V8 power.
Love this automobile! I had the chance to fly behind the "Hisso" engine in an old Travel Air biplane in the mid 1980s. Last I heard the airplane still exists in Oklahoma in the US. Sure would love to give it a go once again.
Would I drive this car? Hell yes and then some. I love this kind of stuff. It's priceless! This is what motoring is all about. Outstanding sir and all the best of luck to you with this car. Thanks for sharing this video.
Exceptional video. Goodwood, you have excelled yourself. This series of films about old early-20th century cars capture the magic of motoring, the passion and enthusiasm of the owners, and they all share a wonderful quintessentially British feel. Whoever made these, you should be heralded for such fine work. Well done to you all. I salute you.
In the USA between the wars these engines were popular with speedway drivers in their sprinters. Nick named the Hisso, they were actually cut down the middle to make a giant 4 cylinder engine .
The SPAD used the more powerful American Liberty engine. The SPAD XIII was the fastest fighter of WW1 with a top level flight speed of 138 MPH and a terminal dive speed of 233 MPH (due to the innovative all metal airframe). Liberty engines were therefore a popular choice for record breaking planes, cars and boats in the 1920's.
27 litres of V-12 aero engine would be a bit much for this tiny Amilcar chassis. At 845lb dry weight, the Liberty engine probably weighs damn near as much as this whole car...
This guy, Duncan Pittaway and the other aero engine fanatics at the VSCC are a bunch of mad old bastards, and I love them for it. I'd love to have a car like this one day. What an amazing custodian.
Hispano Suiza engine? My 1928 Waco ASO came from the factory with this engine....It was used in WWI in the Spad, the 5A and other WWI airplanes....Later versions were geared to the propeller....
please advise on Timing the engine!! My pal Mark Farrall is in need of whatever info you can advise: His Brasier car is to be Raced at Goodwood "members meeting" later this year, but only IF the timing can be fixed..Please please advise
I repaired and drove an Amilcar CGSS (Duval body) from 1929, it's a magnificent car but horrible to drive. You have 2 centimetres between each pedal and when you get to the 3th gear, the fun starts since your legs are stuck in the corner of the car. Better modify that, but since my client wanted it as genuine as possible. Great choice of engine, Amilcar's are fragiles.
Am I weird when I say, I like to live a somewhat sustainable life where I think about the environment and like and respect nature, but I also like cars like this. Which is the opposite of that. It is noisy, it smells, it is a real machine, but I appreciate that from that car.
A handful of enthusiasts with machines like this has probably a negligible effect on the environment compared to some business executive in a private jet

Love the fact that it looks as vintage as it is! Glad he resisted cleaning and polishing every surface of the engine, suspension, etc. Top notch!
Amazing. Damn brits never cease to amaze me with their ingenuity!
And no helmets or right roll cage too!
