- In the new episode of Lord of the Rings the Ringa of power season 2 episode 8, King Durin awakens the Balrog in the Caves and sacrifices himself to save his son Primce Durin| LOTR Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 8
"It was you. Just you. Getting stronger." As a father, this scene cuts deep.
As a son with divorced parents, you get the cut with a huge sprinkle of kosher salt.
Durin bane is the only one that has not been recast.
Only Adar has been recast as far as I know lol

Not to be that guy, but the Balrog's horns are different, thus he's a different actor. It's sad that they never mention that the original Balrog who portrayed Durin's bane died in poverty because he didn't get enough roles after LoTR. I hope that this Balrog doesn't suffer the same fate.
Can't believe they cast a female balrog! Get woke go broke, etc etc. Am I Internetting right?

I hope we get an entire episode of the balrog doing balrog things
I wonder what balrogs do too, besides sleeping and manifesting the ultimate will of Melkor - destruction. Do they poop? Do they eat, and in that case, what do they eat? Can they speak? Is the balrog mourning the death of that balrog that somehow made mithril? Is the balrog sad? How is the balrog doing? Is the balrog misrepresented in the lore somehow? Will Nori somehow ride the balrog, for some reason? Will the desert hobbits ever meet this balrog? I have no goddamn clue. Maybe Durin's wife will cheat on Durin with the balrog? Will this be Sex and the Misty Mountains?

The slow motion scene of Durin's charge, the back ground score and that clash of steel with fire was hands down the best scene of the entire show. Durin's charge was not only an admission of guilt for giving into greed, but an example of sturdiness of dwarves and a lesson for his son, to stay strong. It was terrific and worthy to fit the oft quoted Durin's bane.

Now, my friends, imagine an entire show about the silmarilion, showing morgoth, the balrogs, the valar...
It wouldn't work. The time scales in the Silmarillion are enormous, and there's no real plot. It was mever a novel, it's a compendium
@@digitalarsenal5234 How it doesn't have a plot? The creation of Arda, the two trees and the Silmarils, Feanor's oath, Elves leaving Valinor to pursue Morgoth, all the incredible wars and side stories interconnected. There are also novels like Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin, certaintly more material than what The Rings of Power is based upon.
@@airixxxx Let me correct myself here: there's a plot, bit theres no story. There's a sequence of events, but many of them are isolated. It reads easier as a jistory book than an actual story with arcs.

It is true it was a “copy” of the movie scene in many of its mechanics, but the emotional tale leading up to it was far different. I agree with you OP, this was a fantastic opening scene. In general I have been disappointed with this show, but they have several moments of greatness here and there and it’s enough for me to always be rooting for them. Agreed. I think the only real "issue" with the show is that S1 was pretty much just getting a setup for S2.
Additionally, they have already crafted the entire story arc for all seasons so it will not face the same struggles that later Game of Thrones seasons and the Star Wars sequel trilogy faced.

Ok i despise RoP but even i have to admit they pulled this off PERFECTLY
beforehand have to say that FINALLY THEY DID THIS SCENE HAPPEN!!!
Now my thoughts on this.
I figured they would make this scene (out of frame) to let us preview what would happen 1,731 years later with Durin VI without ruining the entire series timeline and so they decided to condence all in 1 to make the whole audience the live the full pack!
How Durin VI unlock the Balrog later on? (plot wise)
In the show the current Durin saw his father grow sick due to the ring and what that path lead him into. I strongly believe that due to this experience, Durin will avoid using the ring and teaching his future generations not to use it else what happened to his father might befell upon them.
Of course as the years pass by and generations, adding the fact that the Balrog prob went back to sleep, seeing no signs of abnormality or weird events and having a weak Will than his forebears, Durin VI (just how later on Balin assume the Balrog was prob dead = age), he decided to prob attempt to use the ring to improve Khazad Dum economy (lack of mithril). This will eventually lead to his downfall and unlike the luck they dig a sidehill cavesystem which made the Balrog slip, the VI might not have that luck and literally create a cave system steady enough for the Balrog to get free.
Share your thoughts!
Great theory, I love it
I hope we see at the beginning of s3, the Dwarves trying to find way to "imprison" the Balrog, like putting tons of rock over that shaft in particular lol.
It's weird to imagine tho, that this Durin IV would let the story of the Balrog be forgotten or undermined so few generations after him. My (sad) guess is that something might happen to him (and Disa), like, sadly he (they) won't have a big influence in his son's life or something.
it will make no sense because it suppose to be durin 4 dying like that because they decide to mine too deep for a mithril trade with the elf . and durin 4 is literally there in this scene wich make even more no sense

My favorite moment was when the Balrog roared: "It's balrogging time!" and then balrogged all over both Durins.
days without accidents: 0
Even with everything wrong with this series and even the character of King Durin, that was a badass scene. And we got two interesting things.
First, the ones who read the books are aware that the Dwarves are amongst the people of middle earth, the strongest physically. Surpassing man and elves. And we got to see some elf’s batttles against Balrogs and even a Maia. But never a dwarf and their strength put to the test. And like all others, he went down with a sacrifice. It was a nice touch.

Finally this show has a memorable moment. Durin going out like a badass and the CGI of the Balrog looked amazing

That is why Sauron has vowed to destroy them." -Celebrimor "Shadow of Mordor"

This show has SO many issues with it, and yet, there are some moments here and there where it truly shines with cinematic brilliance. This is one of the top moments of the whole show so far.
This and some of the scenes with Celebrimbor and Annatar are pretty solid, especially in episode 7.
Gold in a poop mine.
This was the best scene of the whole season! I don't care that it isn't with the lore. This is how a dwarven king would have gone out. Also the fact that King Durin let's go of the ring when his loved one is in mortal danger shows that the rings, which are based on Saurons powers, can't comprehend true love. Because Saurons sense of love is a twisted and false one. And this is something that Tolikien could have wrote himself. This show has many hits and misses, but this was really good.
I just happen to be peeling onions while I watched this 😭

One would think a significant portion of this show’s BILLION dollar budget would be to give spectacles like an extended scene with this fine fiery fellow. Why are they so stingy with his screen time??
Because it's not his time yet. We are being teased for a reason.
@@eryniel95 I get that but I’m still having a hard time seeing how this show cost literally a *billion* dollars if they don’t go all in on stuff like the Balrog and the REALLY big battles.
@@n7sorcerer419 Issue is that a lot of the stunning environments are just as hard to make as the big battles.
Some fantasy like Star Wars gets around this high cost by filming in front of a crazy high resolution screen but this only works for open flat areas like deserts or big rooms. RoP really wants to have a cool immersive environment that feels like Middle Earth so it makes the whole thing crazy expensive since every scene needs so much detail.
The best scene in 2 seasons of the show
