You have to love Alice Cooper. Behind all the make up and the stage act is a very humble guy that still lives in his home state of AZ and who likes to go fishing and play golf. He did it his way and he did it very well.

I was at that show. I went to high school with Alice and went to the VIP regularly. That was up in the top 2 shows I ever saw; the other was The Chambers Brothers at The Atlantic City Pop Festival in Sept. '69. The Spiders/Yardbirds show cost a buck to get in, which is pretty incredible. Apparently The Yardbirds lost their asses on that tour. I think they ultimately wound up losing money. It was an incredible show.

In 1983, I got tickets to the Los Angeles engagement of the ARMS concert tour. I was there to see my 2 favorite guitarists (so far), Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, but their fellow Yardbird, Jeff Beck was also on the bill. I had just started learning about his stuff, was glad to be seeing him. Well, Eric was drunk off his gourd, Jimmy was messed up, too. But Jeff Beck was freaking AMAZING! He brought Paul Rodgers out to sing a few, and they did "Going Down". During a guitar solo, I saw Jeff take the Les Paul by the tail end with one hand and point it downward as it made a long descending wail, until the headstock gently touched the stage, and he grabbed it back into his arms and played the crap out of it. It is hard to describe in words, but Jeff had complete control of the sounds he was making as he lowered it even though he wasn't even touching the strings. It was Pure. Effing. Magic.

As a young guitar player in the 70's I don't remember who introduced me to him but I had "Blow By Blow" and "Wired" and was quite familiar with who Jeff Beck was, when "There And Back" came out in 1980? It was HUGE for us in my musical circle, a couple friends got to see him on that tour, I loved that album and I was devastated I did not get to go for whatever reason. It was always a hunger for me to get to see the great Jeff Beck. Well about 10 years later I got my chance. He was playing with Santana who I also admired yet wasn't to concerned with because I was going to see "Jeff Beck"!! Well, it was like being in the presence of God, I think I had a smile on my face his whole set it was musical magic and ended far to soon, I then felt "baptized" as a guitar player. My other guitar player friend and I sat in awe of what we just witnessed. The stage then came alive again to flashy outfits and congas playing my friend and I looked at each other and said "you good" yeah I'm good "you good"? Yeah I'm good, we bailed, "sorry Carlos" the only chance I'll probably ever get to see Carlos and I didn't care, I just saw "God" play the guitar "let's go home"

I saw Jeff on the same tour with Santana at mud island Amp. Beck came on first and everyone was literally picking their jaws up off the floor. Terry Bozio was on drums and what a fuckin show! Santana came on next and my buddies and I looked at each other and said "you ready ", and we booked. Santana is a great guitarist but watching him get all spiritual and such having just watched Beck walk on water, no comparison. The whole time Beck was playing everyone was looking at each other mouthing "did you see and hear what I heard . Never seen anything like before or since.

Jim and Chris were also great and before that Paul. They were so different from evry other band. Cosmic.

According to every other account of their concert on August 23, 1966 Casino Ballroom, Avalon, Catalina Island, CA Their set was cut short due to Beck being ill as well as a myriad of broken strings adding to their woes. Apparently they never played Lost Women so perhaps you are mistaken?

There was tension between Keith and Jeff, but it had nothing to do with Broken Strings. Where did you get that? Yes they DID do Lost Woman at that show. Only time I ever heard them do that live.
It was the best concert ever. Jeff and Keith were doing the most advanced and complex sound shaping I had ever seen them do. At one point Keith went behind Jeff and gave him an upside down middle finger over Jeff's head which was very strange, but the tension was musical.
Yes Jeff was starting to crack, but the call and response with Keith and Jeff was mystical and never heard again. I have always kicked myself for not recording it. Always searched for someone with a recording of it. (I am the person who recorded the shrine bootleg with Page)

It was a complete show and for me the biggest surprise was the addition of Lost Woman and of course the loss of Paul and adding Page. At that time in UK print was comments from Keith mentioning the dream of doing a "Space Opera," and Jeff calling the cosmic sound a "Perversion of Sound"
They all had matching Jorden Amps which supposedly Jeff hated. I thought they were amazing. Jeff had this incredible stereo sound the was ping-ponging from right to left. Jeff was on the far right of the wide stage and Jimmy was at the far left. It was surreal in every way. Keith was wrapping the microphone cord around his arms and shoulders and completely electrified All in all this was the Yardbird performance that topped all others I had seen. Maybe the sea air and festival atmosphere added to the tension. The Les Paul had replaced the Esquire and it blew my mind completely.

You can really hear the influence of the Yardbirds in 'School's Out'. There are elements of 'Shapes of Things' in the rhythm, the bass patterns are very similar to Paul Samwell-Smith's when he comes out of the solo section. One of my favourite Alice Cooper songs, mainly because it reminds me of the Yardbirds.

    • @doccyclopz
      @doccyclopz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Aerosmith was another band who worshipped the Yardbirds:
" Listen to 'Somebody,' a song I wrote for Aerosmith's first album: It's all from the Yardbirds. They were the shit to us, out of all the British bands in the Sixties. The Yardbirds were a bit of a mystery. They had an eclecticism -- the Gregorian chant-ness of the vocals, the melodic diversity, the way they used guitar feedback. I loved that weirdness. They did "Shapes of Things," "Beck's Boogie,"among other songs. I was in such awe. They played like no other band. They weren't concerned with clothes or looks or hit singles. Their thing was "What do we do with these sounds?" They did things with harmonics -- minor thirds and fifths -- that created this ethereal, monstrous sound. The two shows I remember where I just sat with my mouth open was that Yardbirds show in 66', and Led Zeppelin at the Boston Tea Party in 1969.The shame is, I know how great the Yardbirds were. But I don't think everyone else knows it. The Yardbirds' music is a gold mine waiting to be stumbled upon. Aerosmith did, because we grew up in that era. The riff in "Walk This Way" is just us trying to explore the blues in the Yardbirds model."

Clapton is a little boring for me as a survivor of heroin addiction. By that I mean when he cleaned up after his Derek and the Dominos phase, the intensity of the energy in his playing was gone. Upon hearing I Shot The Sheriff for the first time on the radio, my friend and I looked at each other and simultaneously said something to the effect of "Is that Clapton?" in utter bewilderment. Almost 47 years since that moment and I still can't believe he ripped off Marley for his comeback. Cheesy and borrrring!

The documentary Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars claims he was envious of the authenticity The Band exhibited in Music from Big Pink. He left his ventures into electrified blues and muscular psychedelia to spend the rest of his career searching for that Americana kind of sound and feel. He failed spectacularly IMO.

Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were pals growing up and exploring guitar riffs. There's some similarity in their playing to a point, and then there is the fork in the road. Some guitarists rely heavily on a couple tricks and very little structure. Beck and Page went from 3-D to 4-D with their playing and exploration of feedback and fuzz distortion.

That particular tour influenced so many people. Not going to disagree with a word of what Alice says here, but the chemistry between Beck and Page led to some monster extended improvisations, which not only inspired metal but also prog. I would dearly love to get hold of one of those bootlegs again, which were the only evidence unfortunately. AFAIK they were the first pop/rock band to do anything of the sort.

Stanley played Fire and Hey Joe simultaneously while holding the strat over his head without missing a note. I am not claiming Stanley Webb ranks with many guitar players, but I have never seen that done before or again. He was just on fire that night and probably never duplicated the feat. I think.

I concur. A gym I used to go to played Jeff Beck's "Flash" cd on their sound system. Whenever "People Get Ready" came on I would stop whatever I was doing and just sit there and soak it in. It would just put me into a trance. Both Rod and Jeff made that track transcendent. And the original by the Impressions was sublime to begin with.
