Dude its like he's a demigod from Greek myth. The man is a legend, no joke. He probably suffered alot at the time square was failing, it was only he gave his soul and all to a game he created that he was finally rewarded by god.
Nice video but I found an error in something you said. Nasser Gebelli the programmer of Final Fantasy had previous experience coding his own games. He even had his own game development company for a while. In the video you guys say he never programmed a game before.
+KabaCreate Thanks for this, looks like you're absolutely right. The video should instead say that he'd never programmed a role-playing game before. I'll put an annotation on the video later to clarify this, really sorry for the mistake!
Final fantasy was gonna be called "Fighting fantasy"? well good thing he named it as if it was his last game, cause the name "Final Fantasy" just sounds awesome!
This video so well made, soo much thought, research and emotion has went into it. You guys really did capture the feeling of Final Fantasy here. The end part literally made me cry.
I loved this video, but I also feel that Dragon Quest should get more recognition for starting the JRPG series. I really think you should do a video on Dragon Quest, if the story of it's origin is good enough. I love your videos and wish that you could find more recognition! Good luck with your videos!
We'll definitely consider a Dragon Quest video, thanks for the suggestion! Although we've got a lot of other videos in the pipeline first, so it might take a while for us to look into it.
I just binged all your videos on my lunch break today. I cannot give high enough praise to your channel. You've definitely got a subscriber in me, keep up the great work 😊
This is technically the origin story of two FF products: Sakaguchi's Final Fantasy, and Stan Lee's Fantastic Four (end consequently the Marvel universe).
I compared him to Stanley Kubrick because the make entertainment with a deep and heavy story which the RPG genre is well known for having a heavy story.
Funny: I've known the details of this story for a long time, but your presentation made it fresh and relevant all over again. Great job. I'm going through a particularly hard, grueling, sometimes-unbearable time right now, and this spoke to me very directly, in a way I totally didn't expect. Thank you for this.
If we can help anyone who's struggling, then this video has succeeded in its purpose. I definitely know the feeling of hitting a wall with some trials. Good luck, I hope you conquer your challenges.
I'm supposed to choose a hero for ELA tomorrow. I would've chosen my waifu Freya Crescent, or another glorious character. But, they had to be real. So, I decided on Sakaguchi, since he made (most) EVERYTHINGGG
You said the Final Fantasy's programmer had never programmed a game before... well the programmer for the first three games was Nasir Gebelli, and he made a bunch of games before coming to Square. He was already a well-respected game designer for the Apple II.
Andrew Whitehead Thanks for this, yeah, we made a mistake. The video was supposed to say he'd never programmed an RPG before. We're working on a follow-up video to clarify things.
Do you know how Enix used to be the king of the JRPG market at the time for their Dragon Quest games while Square were the ones who were struggling financially? Mister Sakaguchi flipped the switch with Final Fantasy and made Square a true rival with Enix up until their eventual merger in mid-2003.
Again well done. However I think you maybe should have included the work of Nobuo Uematsu which in my opinion contributes a lot to what Final Fantasy eventually became.
That's actually a good suggestion, I'll add him to our list of ideas! The nice thing about focusing mostly on one creator per video is we'll be able to go back later and give other developers (and composers, and artists) the attention they deserve.
I totally get your standpoint, just thinking that Final Fantasy is the product of three incredibly talented people being at the right place at the right time. Including Amano here as he is for Final Fantasy what Toriyama is for the Dragon Quest franchise. Please note: It's not my intention to devalue this video. You are doing awesome work, I love the unique style and way you pronounce Japanese names.
+The Ubiquitous Thanks for the suggestion, we'll add him to our list! Might take us a while to get round to him though, we have a lot more videos in the works at the moment.
A lot of this one in particular was strangely relatable..... This was a really good one, honestly, and it was a pleasant surprise to see this show up in my subscriptions list already :)
+Nerd Chaos Glad to hear you liked this one, it took a surprising amount of work! I had to render it three times for silly mistakes, and we recorded the audio in three shifts! Glad you felt a connection with this. There's a lot to learn from some of these game developers about pushing through trials and not throwing in the towel! We really appreciate your comments each time :) it's wonderful to see your avatar in my inbox every time we upload a video. We're hoping to get these going a bit more frequently in future, but we can't promise anything!
Just do what you can. While it would definitely be awesome to keep seeing these more often like this, I understand if it would be too difficult, and I don't want you guys to stress yourselves out. Either way I'm really eager to see what game the next video is about :)
Again... Thank you for these. These are the legends that so many of us hope to follow. Are you going to do the story of Rovio? Also how about the story of Dong Nguyen of dotGears?
I had a chat with BretonStripes about whether we should do Dong Nguyen or not. I was hesitant because his story doesn't really have a happy ending, but she said we should give it a go, because the moral is that we should all be kinder to each other, and I think that's fair enough. So he's on our list, but it'll probably take us a while to get to him. As for Rovio, I'll have to do some digging to see what I can find, so bear with me on that front!
From what I remember, Rovio was on their last game with a dwindling budget when they made Angry Birds. On Dong Nguyen, he's still around. It was a hoax that he committed suicide (thankfully.)
So THATS why it’s called Final Fantasy. I could never figure out if something was final it had so many other games! Also, interesting to note the Fighting Fantasy book series in the UK nixed his original title!
The programmer never learned how to program a game before? That can't be pertaining to Final Fantasy on the Famicom then, because Nasir Gebelli (a.k.a "NASIR") knew how to program a lot of games, many of which were best sellers at its time and Hironobu was a big fan of his. The programmer didn't know how to program an RPG or how it worked by design since he was more of an action game programmer.
+callak _ Believe it or not, I still haven't played it! I want to track it down for the GBA as the Micro is my favourite way to play games, but I'm worried about the tiny screen and lots of text. Plus, it's pretty rare and pirate copies seem to be more common these days.
Considering how many times the game was ported, there's many, many options for you to get the game. There's the original cartridge release, the GBA Dawn of Souls cartridge, the PSone disc, on iOS devices, Android devices, a couple more options and the latest would be the NES classic which then you can play it on your tv easily!
Let’s hope Hironobu Sakaguchi doesn’t repeat his home company’s mistake of hiring revered Sega veterans to make a flopped platformer, or else that would tarnish the reputation of Mistwalker, the company he founded after leaving Square in 2003 when they acquired Enix.
Disney needed another cash grab to sell more toys and remove the stain of Disney games being awful. And they chose (rightfully so) a good gaming company. So SQEX did what they know how to do: a good game. The end! sorry, I know a lot of people love this franchise but there is no story there, just a (very) competent gaming company doing its job right.
Unfortunately, the rumor that it was named "Final Fantasy" due to it being what was thought to be their last game, is untrue. They wanted to name it "Fighting Fantasy", but that was taken and they figured anything with the initials "FF" would work.
I've added both of them to my master list of ideas! It'll probably be quite a while before we get around to them, as I feel like I want to be more experienced at making these before tackling such big gaming icons, but we'll hopefully get there eventually.
RoboticMagus Final Fantasy II is not a bad game by any means. They went out on a limb to try some new things that didn't work so well, but that's life. The mechanics are a neat idea just not properly executed Anyway, XIII is widely considered the worst. II is considered meh.
The dude just pressed F twice to pay respects, and blew the whole place sky high.
This channel certainly needs more recognition than it currently does...
I agree. A lot. :D
Final Fantasy is probably one of the coolest names ever.
Dude its like he's a demigod from Greek myth. The man is a legend, no joke. He probably suffered alot at the time square was failing, it was only he gave his soul and all to a game he created that he was finally rewarded by god.

Flipping hell I end up getting a final fantasy advertisement!
Specifically about...
That's why every game developer should create it's game as it's final game.
tell that to EA and Activision...
Ubisoft didn't get the memo.
You right
Final fantasy was gonna be called "Fighting fantasy"? well good thing he named it as if it was his last game, cause the name "Final Fantasy" just sounds awesome!
Agreed!
This guy was to Square Enix as Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Naka were to Nintendo and Sega perspectively,
The programmer was not a beginner, it was Nasir Gebelli who at that time was already known for having programmed many good games
This video so well made, soo much thought, research and emotion has went into it.
You guys really did capture the feeling of Final Fantasy here. The end part literally made me cry.
I loved this video, but I also feel that Dragon Quest should get more recognition for starting the JRPG series. This was beautiful :') your voice made it sound like a fairy tale
I have loved Final Fantasy for most of my life. This was yet another awesome story time. And god timing too with FF15 just coming out!
Really, really good video (as always)! Seriously, you guys need way more subscribers than you have.
D'aww shucks! Well we really appreciate the subscribers we do have - You guys are the best!
I just binged all your videos on my lunch break today. I cannot give high enough praise to your channel. You've definitely got a subscriber in me, keep up the great work 😊
Really glad to hear you enjoyed it, thanks so much! :D
This is a beautiful story of the man behind the videogame series I love so much.
I love coming back and rewatching these videos. They always encourage me when I need it.
I love the illustrations and narration and how this feels in many ways like a story book.
Keep up the good work. Amazing story. I did not know about what Hironobu Sakaguchi passed to make his Final Fantasy. Cheers from Chile.

These vids are so incredibly soothing, love them.
You can really see the drop in quality of Final Fantasy after his departure from Square.
yay another Squaresoft nostalgiatard :D
Giordan Diodato nostalgiatard? Have u finished ff10-2 through 15? I have. They suck balls in comparison to ff1-10
Giordan Diodato Pathetic
indeed
@@GiordanDiodato Didnt mention anything about Square or Enix merging...
Aw man, they went with the “this could be my final game” version of his story
I'm supposed to choose a hero for ELA tomorrow. I would've chosen my waifu Freya Crescent, or another glorious character. But, they had to be real. So, I decided on Sakaguchi, since he made (most) EVERYTHINGGG

i love it, thanks for making this videos i found them very motivational
Thank you for watching! We appreciate you :D

Very inspirational.
amazing I cry in every video
i wonder if you should do Naoki Yoshida and Final Fantasy 14 is worthy on this Storytime from its Troubled Development to a successful relaunch
Definitely worth consideration, I'll add it to our list!
ok looking forward to it besides FF 14 Development story is a good cautionary tale.
Thankyou for this video, I love your work ❤️
This is trully inspiring.
even the soundtrack is epic
Such an awsome video!
I need to watch all the stories.

and here we are now
music is reminiscent of star ocean 2, really nice work
So wholesome at the end :)
Without Dragon Quest There is No Final fantasy. Thank you Yuji Hori Godfather of JRPGS
*INTRO CREDITS WOO YEAH*
Pretty good and informative.
You should do a video on Yasunori Mitsuda, the composer of the music from Chrono Trigger!
+The Ubiquitous Thanks for the suggestion, we'll add him to our list! Might take us a while to get round to him though, we have a lot more videos in the works at the moment.
His story is incredible. I listened to it on Dark Pixel.
Would you make a video about the story of Hideo Kojima? :D
He's already on our list, and should be one of the next few videos we make. Expect it some time in the new year!

Love the cartoons/animation!
Game developers nowadays dnt really care abt narrativd..jst make it a battle royale with microtrans...huge ROI with little effort

Narrator straight up came out of a dark souls game.
From these videos I have learnt that the key to being a god designer is god imagination and risks.
Awesome awesome video! I subscribed! :)

wow that was deep...
FF1 was supppsed to be square's final fantasy but little did that know it was their beginning
Please so an Episode on Yuji Hori as well.
:,) LOVED THIS
Hearing the bit about enix makes the merger all the sweeter...
But now Final Fantasy is being milked to death by Square Enix (e.g FF XV). I'm beginning to worry about this franchise
Woo, Final Fantasy 1! The 1st console rpg I played.
+callak _ Believe it or not, I still haven't played it! I want to track it down for the GBA as the Micro is my favourite way to play games, but I'm worried about the tiny screen and lots of text. Plus, it's pretty rare and pirate copies seem to be more common these days.

Video Game Story Time Get it for PSP (preferably to play on PS Vita). That is the definitive, most beautiful, version. You won't be sorry.
Ooh, that would mean dragging out my old PSP from wherever it is now. That thing hasn't seen the light of day in years...
One question... is the one drawing for this video is katie cook?
No, although we do love Katie's stuff. The artist is @kotorcomics on Twitter.
@@VideoGameStoryTime oh,ok then thanks for the info

Fight til the last breath for the things that you want in life. 🙂🐤🐤🐤
The only inaccurate fact in this video is that he wasn’t going back to school, he was in fact going to pursue a hiphop career.
God this is so sad for such a groundbreaking game >
Legend fantasy 😎
Subbbedddd you got me at hidetaka mayazaki 😂

Do Kirby! Or Chronotrigger!
Ah, that was a nice one.... but I'm feeling sado/masochistic: HIT ME WITH FEELS! Do Gunpei and/or Iwata.

do earthbound
nice video, but his full story is far more epic
My dad is friends with Hiro. But I u fortunately hate my dad now that I'm older and see the truth
I am not a fan of FF but damn... Such a strugle and now I knew why the title is Final Fantasy
You need resident evil and silent hill :)
You need to turn up the audio and speak up your too quite.
Also tomb raider :)
This video is ASMR lol
Why was your voice so soft and shallow in this video? Should've spoke more assertively and confidently.
Why do you call him “hirrrrooonobu”? It doesnt sound English and doesn’t sound Japanese either
Too bad that the first sequel was also the worst game in the main series.
IV is still worse

Giordan Diodato And you're on crack.
Elskidor Gwanallia I hated IV and liked XIII.
IV is literally one of the best games in the series.
