Blimey! I actually remember this! I was only 6 back then.. but I realy do remember that! Wow. what a heck of a blast from the past that was. Many thanks for uploading.
Hey,herbert 57, thanks LOADS for sharing that with us ! What a great clip, think I can just remember that sequence, but it wasn't long before they changed it to the later one, in the Holness era - when the set had the blue background.
I thought the whole show was quality through and through, from titles, music, graphics, presentation, subject matter, and ultimately, a fine congenial unpatronising host - Mr Bob Holness. He will be missed.
Until today, I'd never seen this opening (I'm 39) and often wondered why Welch quoted the symphony. I didn't realise that the music was scoring Beethoven's portrait actually appearing in the original title sequence! Just another bit of 1980s class. :)
The theme for blockbusters was composed by Ed Welch. Central TV and Ed Welch released the full 3 minute version back in 1988 on 7" single. A friend of mine still has it!
One of the stated aims of the game was to test the adage that "two heads are better than one". Given that the single contestants won quite often, it seemed to be evidence that one head is quite sufficient (fortunate really, as I only have one head myself).
What a tune! The show was so boring but Bob was brilliant! It was an odd mix though, such a cool modern tune mixed with the type of host you'd associate with classical music. Still it worked... for 10 years!
You were Being Rude, 1st commet: What the hell kinda Blockbusters is this this proves it. also UK version run for over 10 years, US well 3 years at most
This guy's like a god... Okay, so he's the host of "Blockbusters." What religion are you-Blockbuster Episcopal? Blockbuster Witness? I know- BLOCKBUSLAM!! WHO IS BOB HOLNESS!!? And what country is this from???
Two messages fer ya, me bucko: 1. If BILL CULLEN or BILL RAFFERTY ain't the host of Blockbusters, then it ain't the REAL Blockbusters. 2. If Bob Cobert didn't write the theme song, then it ain't the ORIGINAL Blockbusters, hosted by BILL CULLEN. 3. If Mark Goodson/Bill Todman Productions or Mark Goodson Television Productions didn't make it, then it ain't the REAL Blockbusters. 4. I AM 37 YEARS OLD. I KNOW BLOCKBUSTERS. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT IT...?
Uh-unh. No way Ray. No you didn't... Since you're in the UK, you should have had the art of reading English mastered. Obviously, you don't. Let's go to class... The user "snakecharmerofborg" ran his trap about mouthing off. But he got the straightening put on himself about that already. Read the comments again, and pay attention to who says what before you go running YOUR mouth. my statements aren't based on research, but first-hand experience. Have a good day.
cold winter evenings tucking into my warm hearty meal back in the 80's, loved it.

3 reasons why Blockbusters was the best gameshow around:
1. Great concept

The theme to this was used in a McVitie's Jaffa Cakes advert in 2014.
I always loved the theme tune ! Reminds me also of the wonderful theme tune to Channel 4's "Treasure Hunt."
Anyone notice that the theme tune quotes Beethoven's 5th at the moment when Beethoven's portrait appears?

Gulp, sigh I think I'm going to cry.
Notice how the music goes “de-de-de-duuuuh” when Beethoven appears
A clever use of Fifth Symphony, I oughta say.
It was Ed welch who composed the UK Theme tune.
Absolutely love Ed Welsh’s title music together with Catchphrase

This intro sequence resembles the colour scheme of early CGA-based PCs (Magenta, Cyan and Black). That is kind of scary.
