All of wrestling is cringe to the average eye, no matter what era, its like calling grass green. Unless you are immersed in the product and wholeheartedly enjoy it, its all gonna be easily perceived as cringe worthy. That's why people have used "Suspension of Disbelief" when viewing performance arts for centuries.
