Exactly, and considering that the novels that True Blood is made from weren't really even intended to be serious, it's kind of entertaining that people take it so seriously. It's not supposed to be accurate, it's supposed to be cheesy and fun. And it is. Signed- A witch who gets together with her coven on Sundays to watch True Blood and discuss which male character is the loveliest (Eric all the way, I don't care what anyone else has to say about it)
As someone whos studied Classical Greek Religion in college, i both loved and hated this scene They get SO much right about traditional Maenads and Bacchantes, but they may a huge glaring error in the ancient Greek they are chanting The phrase is IO, IO , pronounced YO YO, not LO LO! It means "Hail! ", Praise to!" , much like Ave in Latin and it is used to invoke or praise a deity.I am guessing the script writers when doing their research for this scene, they found transliterated Greek, and thought the capital Is were lowercase Ls and didnt know any better. The rest of what they are saying , are all the names and titles of the God Bacchus/Dionyssos, the patron deity of Maenads Bromios the loudly shouting , Dendrites, the tree like, Eleutherios, the liberator etc
They also butchered a phrase that Maryann says when Sookie overhears her thoughts if I remember correctly. It comes from the rituals of Eleusinian mysteries (these go back to Mycenaean period) and it was the "Hekas o hekas este bebeloi" (begone be the profanes) one. Even though they did a good job to give a subtle hint to the maenad's background and age (i guess greek dark ages which makes her around 3600 years old) the pronounciation is wrong on so many levels. Not the actress's fault at all still, she nailed the role
Are you saying that the Maenads and Bacchantae did not throw wild orgies? Are you saying that they did not stir worshippers into an ecstatic frenzy, that they did not eat raw flesh, that Dionysos is not the God that Comes? Are you saying that they did not kill Orpheus or engage in wild Bacchic rites and bacchanals?
The song is called The Forgotten People by Thievery Corporation.
Thank you for your work
@@Alexander-wq7qo I came here because of that song, people at the song said they came there from this scene so I had to go watch it.
Gods above and below, I LOVE the music in this scene!
This episode was one of the most enthralling episodes I’ve ever watched in any show 💯
I Love Maryann 😍
My favorite season haha
Mine too. I was fascinated by the maenad, and they chose the perfect actress to play her.
Lo-Lo Bromios, Lo-Lo Dendrites, Eleutherios, Enorches, Bacchus
