  • These are tips for people who want to come to Thailand to live, work, teach English, or even just to travel. These are some of my best tips and informational insights I gained during my year and a half of living here (so far). I hope these are helpful and will give you a better experience for when you finally do come.
    Thanks for watching! :)
    *Update Nov. 5, 2013*
To all of people have written some pretty nasty comments regarding this video, that's fine to have your opinion. A lot of this information was meant to be taken in a certain humorous light, so relax people. I wouldn't describe myself as a very judgmental person at all, although some of what I said may have come across like that. I have friends from all different races, of all sizes, shapes, abilities and disabilities. I made this video from my current perspective at the time I filmed it. And, I have absolutely nothing against Thai people. In fact, I hold them in the highest regard and the culture is near and dear to my heart.
So, take what is useful from this video and leave the rest behind and please leave the rude comments behind too. If you have constructive criticism, fine, but the name calling and attempts to insult me are not necessary. If you don't like this video, go find another one that is more useful to you. :)

It’s so interesting to see the reaction of a “westerner” who has arrived an Asian country the very first time and experienced the cultural shock ( I was the other way round - an Asian who went to the West and was surprised by western culture, many years ago). These “weird things” are pretty much the same in most Asian countries, just like we Asians thought most “White people” are “so different from us”.
Decades ago people from “developing” countries went to the “West” and learn to live there. Now the “westerners” move to Asia, and learn to cope with it. Very interesting. The world is becoming a huge “village”. Let’s just understand that we are all brothers and sisters in this big family called “universe”, we should love each other.

Hi, I'm Thai/ English, live in Thailand, and after watching your vid I feel I need to clarify a few things:
    1) In any mall or 'tourist' restaurant/ hotel they DO have plenty of tissue in the toilet.
    2) You'll find napkins in any upscale restaurant or chain restaurant.
    3) In the supermarkets, like Big C and Tesco, they DO sell normal body lotion.
    4) I've never met anyone in Thailand who works 20 hours a day! Come on...
    5) God knows what you're talking about regarding Thai's love for 'small' animals???
    6) There are in fact three seasons; you missed out the 'Rainy' Season from May-October.
    7) There are many Thai women who are not bimbos and actually have a brain.
The most important TIP when coming to this country, like anywhere, is stop comparing the country to your own, and embrace the differences and culture. The best tip when coming to Thailand is smile and be respectful:-)

I've lived in Thailand for 4 and a half years now and I just want to say some stuff coming from my experience.
    1. There aren't mosquitos everywhere! I rarely ever get mosquito bites! But if there are mosquitos in your house though, I suggest spraying with insect killer every week or so.
    3. I agree with this one but I think I saw a comment saying something like they used bottled water to brush their teeth? I mean you can use tap water just as long as you don't drink it, so you can wash your hands, face, you know any part of your body.
    4. Only in public toilets that are at places like petrol station.
    5. So what? I just wanna clean my face from the food that's on it. Also, hahahahaha 'That's a big difference.'
    6. What stores are you going to? There are plenty of stores that sell non-whitening body lotion.
    7. Are you saying that you don't understand their accents? I mean as long as their not hurting anyone with their accents then it's all good!
    8. Not everyone!
    9. New Yorkers walk fast as hell though! They basically run compared to other people IN AMERICA!
    10. Really? Never heard that before.
    11. NOT EVERYONE!
    12. Not everywhere! 😑
    13. It's 'cause they know cars aren't going to hit them
    14. Did you notice that umbrellas also provide shade as well as cover from the rain?
    15. Not just in Thailand. They do that in a lot of other countries as well. Also, they don't want your dirty shoes walking around their super clean home.
    16. Not everyone 😑😑😑
    17. Guess again? Not everyone. You are talking like all thai people are the exact same! They are all different! Just like they are in America and England and anywhere else in the world.
    18. No we drive on the left and walk on whatever side has possible room.
    19. We got bad traffic, OK? It isn't like traffic just pops up at rush hour(s), it's just a constant traffic jam.
    20. Nope. We got, like you said, hot, hotter, but then, rainy and winter (22º C)
    21. Ya those are called motorbike taxi stands... They aren't like normal taxi's, you can't exactly wave them over easily. That's why there are taxi stands and plus there's one on almost every soi, so don't really see what the problem is.
    22. NOT EVERY WOMAN!

I'm Thai myself and I agree with everything in this video. I've lived in the UK for most of my life so it's very easy for me to draw comparisons between Thai and Western culture and all of your observations are indeed correct (or at least contain some truth!)
I wanna make a few comments on some points too, Thais don't use toilet paper because they prefer to use water to clean themselves as they believe that using water is cleaner and it also cools them down!
I agree that Thais are very honest but it's not to be rude, it's all for your best interest because they want you to look good! There are lots of stray dogs in Thailand and most are ill or diseased in some way - so most Thais don't own a family pet because not only can many families can afford to feed an extra mouth but they also can't afford health treatment if a family member catches an illness from their pet.

People relax. My wife is Thai and these observations are 100% true. She'll chuckle and admit it. I though Regina's delivery was awesome. I am about 5'11" and I feel like a giant. The biggest culture shock for me was to see a soda in a glass bottle... they took that bottle and poured it into a grocery bag with ice and stuck a straw in it -- Sweet Jesus, that's batty.

it's not their "culture", thai coca cola company recalls their glass bottles for recycling, if the customers took the glass bottles, they don't have any to recycle and are forced to manufacture new ones. Use your brain.

    • @randomness8819
      @randomness8819 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Siri Rii In the mid east its the same. However, if you want to take the bottle or case you leave a recycling deposit (just a bit of change). That way if the bottles arent returned they are paid for and if so the customer get the change back...

Another Thai here and I have a serious fact about my country. Only few groups of Thai people can communicate english (below 10% of 60+ million) so, if you wanna live here you better learn to communicate Thai language as best as you can because we're too shy to speak english.
Hanging out with native friends, the topic you have to avoid are politics and anything about 'inside the palace' unless your friend starts the topic then my best advice is to agree with every single word because your friend might be a (irrational) patriot (rather fanatic) he/she may insult you severely or even hit you and tell you to "pack your fucking stuff and get the fuck out of my country", something like that. (sound likes joke, huh? It's real, Thai people wide open to anything except these two things)
Most of our kids have no respect to public property and more likely to overlook some rules -- internet, "no other language in general chat but english" - World of Tanks, but what I saw is [][][][][][] 555+ (box language is actually Thai font that my current patch don't support and 555+ is equivalent of LOL or ROFL "5" pronounced "ha" and "+" means infinite amount). So if you encounter something like this, please forgive them.
Last but not least, if you says "english please" to thai kids, the response you'll get maybe "english no language mother me" (english is not my mother language, in other words "thai please")

5:56 They use umbrellas for the same reason they have whitening cream in body lotion. They don't want their skin to get dark from the sun because it is considered unattractive. The word "umbrella" evolved from the Latin "umbella" or "umbra", meaning shaded or shadow. Also -ella in French is used as a suffix added to words, attaching the meaning of "little", thus an umbrella is a "little shadow". One of the main uses for an umbrella is to shade from the sun, not only from the rain.

I'm Thai and I appreciated your opinion on Thailand. However, I feel like I have to comment, since you are speaking inclusively about "Thais". I do agree with some of your "tips" but I feel that you're not having a good time in my country based on your attitude and I'm sorry for that. I do feel a bit frustrated when you mentioned about Thai people's behaviors. Hopefully you'll have more time to get to know educated Thai people. Many things you have mentioned is based on your opinion which I fully respect. Just try to get to know Thais that can fully explain our society and culture to you in English then I think you'll appreciate Thais a lot more.
P.s. Please don't let the accent bother you, I was not offended by your Thai pronunciation on "no oil" :) so if you can't speak perfect Thai then why should you expect Thais to speak perfect English?
    Have a good day

If you are in the northeast Issan region, it is an advantage to wear a pakama or long sash of plaid cotton cloth about your waist. It can be used as many things and, for me, comes in handy when having to dry my hands, wipe my brow, use as a wind or sun mask, and occasionally, to loop above the door frame on the bathroom to hang my trousers when the stall does not have a hook. The Isaan folks are delighted to see a foreigner wear the pakama and assimilate.

ok, some constructive criticism :) i always encourage and favour people who do effort to make videos and give tips. sadly a lot of what you say is not really sooth.
So i just comment them, ok. not shoot me :)
    - a mosquito racket is not really useful in thailand. in the day better buy a lotion and in the night a mosquito-net. and there not that much mosquitoes in Thailand.
    - yes They do 'waays' in Thailand. But is not common. If you waay to the wrong person in the hierarchy, you look like a fool.
    - They have napkins in restaurants :) only not in a cheap restos or street food carts
    - Thai people are surely NOT honest. I don't mean that in a bad way but they will never try to make you feel uncomfortable. They are shy people. They are not straight up as Americans.
    - If you 5 or 10 minutes late in Thailand.... you are too early ! :)

The umbrella thing makes sense; it provides shade, helping to keep people cool and prevent their skin from getting excessive sun exposure. I just hate it when people using 'sunbrellas' take up the entire sidewalk and it's impossible to cut in front of them when they walk slowly.

I really love the mosquito zapper idea, that is the best thing to have when traveling Asia. where did you get your's? Btw, regarding keeping up appearances in Thailand, there other many countries who care about appearance and looking their best when they go out to a bank or even outdoor market-Europeans and most of the world do this w/o evening thinking about it. America through the 1980s used to dress up and have social graces and nowadays it seems that going out in PJs is the norm (which isn't bad, but I don't think I would like to see a bank teller who is handling my hard-earned money sloppily dressed or wearing PJs).

One more thing, I didn't teach at the University level. I did teach temporarily at an exclusive and expensive private school. During finals one of the teachers was giving answers to the students. What's worse is one time she gave the wrong answer to one of the students. I got in her face and told her she couldn't do that. It kind of deflated my enthusiasm for a while. I'm thinking about returning. I might try Turkey or Vietnam. I do like the hot and humid weather.

You're absolutely right about image. Especially with younger people. Also, losing face isn't just a Japanese thing. It's pretty much Asia wide. I never once raised my voice at my students when they got out of control. A cold, icy stare at the perpetrator always shamed them into sitting down and shutting up. Thankfully not all my classes were a bunch of monsters. I taught elementary kids. The 9 and 10 year old students were the most disruptive.

I'd say you're right on the mark. While many Thais do have dogs and cats as pets I didn't notice an affinity for other small animals as pets. L's and r's? Those aren't the only letters. K's are actually a G sound at the beginning of a syllable. L's at the end of a syllable have an N sound. Very confusing for English speakers but when I learned the Thai alphabet I understood why. :-)

You are correct on most of these Regina. I'm from New York and my wife is Isaan, now I know why we can't walk together! And, yes, she cannot say "noodle." She says "nooda" and I think it's cute not frikkin racist. I can't imagine how laughable my Thai and Isaan language skills are. A couple adds to your list: Don't hug Thai people. Americans think it's cute, Thais think it's as invasive and French Kissing your mother. When visiting someone's home sit lower than them - never stand over them or sit higher than them - that's really rude. As a Marine I always learned it's respectful to get off your ass and stand when you greet some one - not so in Thailand, stay lower. My knees, back and legs kill me after about 20 minutes of sitting on the floor! And for the European girls who strut around topless on Thai beaches: you might get a rise from men in Germany but Thai people think you are real jerks and would rather you stay home. If falangs would remember it's THEIR country, not yours, regardless where you go, you will get along better with local people and share a much more rewarding cultural experience.

And of course, don't forget that in general there are THREE sounds, for R .. L and then a separate set of three for D .. T.
And of course (eg) in other languages like Innuit (main-land Eskimo), Viet Namese, there are many more VOWEL sounds that if you don't learn by the time you are three or four, they are almost impossible to get. -- Lingo 222, humans -- and they thought "The Library of Babel" was intrigue-ing. -r.

It always humours me when people claim to not like a video but watch it anyway then take the time to leave a bitch ass comment. Your video is fine and a good intro to things new tourists will notice, I'm just back from Thailand and agree with them all, especially the dogs, you have to watch out for them trotting out from a side road when you're on a motorbike. Oh, and the Thai honesty, it can take you by surprise when people are so smiley and friendly and then say something which in the west would be impolite but in Thailand is normal. They (usually) don't mean any offense so just smile back, always smile, that solves most things!

No toilet paper in public bathrooms? Is that a policy they adopted because of Chinese travelers and ex-pats coming to Thailand, or has it always been that way? Do they at least supply liquid soap for killing germs after using the toilet? (The majority of Chinese restrooms do NOT have soap nor TP.)

A lot of us are sorry for what our government is doing. A lot of us are ignorant because of our system. Do you see our Daily Show and other such parody channels? I think you may went to just only small place in Thailand or living in a short time, that's why you didn't understand why Thai walk in the right and drive in the left. Many country didn't same I think,It's normal.
So we use "umbrella" even it's not raining coz it's very hot in Thailand 30C in a day almost all year. The hot sun may make your skin burned and that's why thai girl look so young than true age.

    • @Loukgob
      @Loukgob 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. In Sweden we do drive on the right and walk on the left. This actually make sense if you would walk along a road in the dark, since you're much more likely to see cars coming at you and will have time to step aside if necessary. Thailand is the same but reversed, still makes just as much sense.
Regarding umbrellas there are days in April to May when I use them as well, sometimes it's just too hot!
