G-SHOCK versus Watchmaker

    How difficult, for a watchmaker, can a G-SHOCK Carbon Core Guard be to stripdown completely, clean, rebuild and configure? This sounded like and interesting challenge and it came with the added bonus that a would create a video, this video, filled with rare footage of what is actually inside, deep inside, a G-SHOCK watch. Challenge Accepted !!!

    Really enjoyed this - perfect with a Saturday morning mug of coffee. Im slightly embarrassed to say (although only slightly) I've got 5 gshocks now, mostly picked up used from ebay, and have had a couple open to change batteries. The debris that fell out of one of them was enough to plant a small plant, but under the real caseback it was mint - amazing really.
    Thanks.

    I'm a watch and clockmaker. I've owned my G-Shock since 1989. Only had to replace the battery once. It's now on year 9 of battery number 2. I even done a video of me throwing it at a pebble dashed wall and 50ft in the air to prove how tough it is. It'll outlast me.

    Well done, Richard! In this episode, you have satisfied my undying curiosity of G-Shock watches. It has always fascinated me on the inner workings of these iconic watches. Once the watch was reassembled, and I witnessed the functions as the mode control was manipulated, I now realize the necessity for two batteries. This was quite enjoyable, and educational at once. Thank you for posting! Cheers!

    Richard, when I first saw you doing this I was like "Why is he servicing a g-shock?"
    Then i saw the crud that had worked its way inside.
    So while a digital doesn't need to be serviced in the same way a mechanical watch does, it still needs to be cleaned occasionally. Bang on video, mate!

      Hi JToddHubbard7 .... I did 'go a little further' a little further than was strictly necessary to remove the crud; but it was interesting right? An occassional clean as you say is a good thing with all watches I guess. Thanks for the feedback. Richard

  • @Chris_the_Muso
    @Chris_the_Muso 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I used to scuba dive. After you've been to the beach it's extremely important to wash everything made of metal in fresh water to remove all traces of salt. In this case where it has a plastic over shield, leave it soak for half an hour with occasional agitation.
    I would have been tempted to use a little rust converter on the rust stains. About 5% phosphoric acid for about half an hour. You can buy 85% food grade phosphoric acid and dilute 1:16 with a little distilled water. It does tend to leave bare steel with a blue/black patina (iron phosphate) but doesn't touch coatings (your mileage may vary). The bare steel can then be retouched with a little enamel paint or recoated to prevent further corrosion.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just a tip for most analog-digital G-Shocks, press and hold the set button (top-left) for 5 seconds until it enters the hand adjust option. This allows you to “zero” the analog hands so they correspond with the correct digital time. Press the mode button (Bottom-left) to switch between the main hands and sub dial. Use the right buttons to move the hands position to get them back to zero. Press the adjust button (top-left) to exit this mode. This should be done every time there is a battery change, or if for whatever reason the hands don’t match.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Neal... Thanks for this. I actually misaligned the hands a little ( in relation to one another) so I went back in and sorted that out. Then i read the manual and used the facility you describe to sync the hands with the digital read out. It worked very well. Good tip. Thanks so much l. Richard

    • @gmtoomey
      @gmtoomey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most higher end Casios have a "touch movement". This is Casio-speak for actuators on the hand motors that let the watch know their exact location. This is why they need to be adjusted after a battery change.
      Also the buttons on G-shocks have dual gaskets instead of the more normal single gaskets, which makes water ingress unlikely. This also means the buttons are large.

    On most G-SHOCKs those springs go flying when you take the metal backplate off. Most are a connection to a speaker on the backplate for the alarm and button push sounds. If you lose one a truck is to find the correct size lug bars (shock absorber looking things). Pull them apart and get the spring out of them. Cut the correct size length off and replace into the hole it came out of.. Put your backplate back on and voila. Your alarm and button sounds work again. They won't be brass but they still conduct electricity and work just as well.

    Great video, I am curious about the motors, they look like Lavet-type stepper motors (single coiled attested by this exceptional video), but Lavets usually are unidirectional, In this watch it seems Casio used Timex like step motors, which explains the difference and somewhat lagged hand movement result in the natural steps onwards versus backwards, FYI US patent 4205262, it's referenced by thus 1988 European patent application by Timex. This for sure will be a matter of discussion always about the cost versus engineering delivered from Casio to its customers.

    Wonderful. Thank you very much but the one important question . . . !
    Is this G-Shock tougher than say a Rolex - if you threw both watches against a wall - multiple times - which would survive longer?
    In every day life - slaming a spade into rocky soil gives an automatic watch massive shocks and breaks some watches . . .
    I tried diging with an older watch which then needed repairs . . . I now have a G-Shock 2100.
    Would love to see a video on the 2100 series or even the later version with solar charging.
    The other beauty of these watches - parts can be changed - I like the idea of a bespoke watch!
    Would you be interested in adding bespoke parts?
    At the moment sorting out the movement and a more attractive strap - would like to enjoy wearing the watch
    Many thanks for the video,

    I love my Citizen Attesa CC9015-54E. It’s an all-analogue display, with a titanium body and bracelet, anti-reflection coated sapphire crystal. It receives radio time signals and so is always correct to the second, it has GPS so on foreign trips it automatically adjusts to the correct tine zone, and it is charged by light, so no battery changes needed. Yet it’s really light on my wrist because of the titanium.

    I have a G-Shock GA100 which I bought ages ago from Argos for £40 because I needed a watch at work right there and then. I absolutely hate everything about it, the way it looks, the way the hands always seem to cover the display when I need to see something on it. But it just won't die, and I've worn it on and off for years. Much better watches that I loved have come and gone, and at the moment my Traser has stopped, my Luminox needs a new movement and my Tissot's crown has fallen off - so I'm back to using this G-shock at work that I can't stand but just seems to be indestructable, despite being abused and having not a single days service in at least 15 years.

    Great video as always Richard. Here's an odd one for you. Would you mind explaining (if you haven't already) the meaning of your family crest? Something to do with jewerly... gold.. watchmaking? I'd be interested to know. Cheers from Canada!

    Great video!! I had a ga-2000 but stripped the threads in several holes (for the caseback and rear guard) when changing batteries, so no chance of resisting water afterwards. Luckily, I found a used replacement in good condition. What can I do to avoid the problem when I come to change the batteries next time? I thought about pressing the caseback down while unscrewing, so the screws weren't under as much tension, but you didn't do anything like that!? Was I just unlucky?

    Hello, very interesting and instructive video, thank you very much however why make a comparison of a G-Shock at less than 80$ and compare with a watch of 10000$? Of course the materials and workmanship are not the same. Wouldn't it be more reasonable to make a comparison with an MRG-B2000GA-1A for example to get a real idea of Casio Premium?

    My partner is a Casio / G-Shock dealer - and they are not a great company to work with (in the words of my partner - a bunch of shits) - normal watches can have their batteries exchanges easily in the shop, these are more of a challenge and customers do not like to be charged extra - further if you want to sell other models then they are not flexible at all.
    I wanted to purchase a casio watch for personal use and they said no ( and yes I would pay for it)
    It now looks as if they will only sell on-line in the future

    Nice to see for entertainment value but pulling apart a G Shock like this is asking for trouble, we don’t really service them in the way you will service a mechanical watch, most parts are unavailable anyway, at best, if you are lucky can find a whole movement for it.

    I have the exact same watch in the same colour combo. I wanted an indestructible watch that I can swim and use in the gym etc without worrying and g shocks have done the trick for years. I’ve got Raymond Weil, Seiko etc but literally never use them. I just use the g shock.

    i'm not likeing how dirt accumulates between those plates 2:06, that will then keep leaking dirty water to then skin after taking a shower and cause fungus infection and smell. i think i would rather have another casio watch without that second plate.

    Done in true British 'bodge it in the shed' fashion! Captivating and cringe-inducing at the same time. By the way, what bit did you forget to do on the reassembly? You didn't show or tell the answer..
