    This is really funny to me because I'm only just now venturing into making fitted garments, and the dress I recently made for Valentine's Day, while warm and cozy, was SO heavy that I had to constantly yank up the sleeves and hitch up the bust to keep from showing off my strapless bra to the general public. So basically, I've just learned my own lesson about yarn vs. gravity the hard way, and it seems these designers have yet to get it themselves 😂

    its giving when pattern writers have clearly never branched outside of xs-l and think a 2xl is 100cm like bae who is writing these patterns like hire me to test and edit your patterns PLEASE like how is an actual COMPANY making these patterns and kits but not doing the math and taking stretching, hook size, and tension, into account??? a 7mm hook with a light weight yarn yet having THAT be the reference picture is crazy because HOWWW did they use a 7mm hook with light weight cotton and not have any gaps or stretching??? even working with a 5mm and cotton with tight tension would at least leave small holes. we r knitters ur a catfish fr!!!

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      the 7mm with that size yarn does not make sense, i kept checking their website to make sure i was meant to have a 7mm hook in hopes i was sent the wrong one but nope.

  • @MsNinjani
    @MsNinjani 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    I never thought of this before, but in these kits where they send you needles/hook, are you just screwed if you don't meet gauge?

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      i think so! the instructions also didn’t come with any photos, just a few digital diagrams… unironically one of the worst patterns i’ve ever followed

    When I got a kit from them, there wasn't enough yarn to make the garment hahahah
    Also the sweater slowly becoming floor length throughout the video is so funny hahahaha

  • @ladyangua1
    @ladyangua1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Holy hell this kit is $200 in Australia! The kit says a 7mm hook but if you look at the yarn page the recommended hook is 5mm. I would frog it, redye the yarn and make something else.

  • @tadpole53

    I had a similar experience with the Toto Sweater kit from WATG (A brand very similar to WAK) a few years ago. Pretty pricey kit, and I spent a few weeks working on it. It turned out mostly ok after I finished it, but the bottom hem was way too big and loose, and the armpits were way too tight on me. The shoulder seem sat on top of my shoulder instead of being a drop shoulder like it should have been. And the sweater was ok-ish until I decided to give it it's first wash. It grew SO much. My sleeves were super long and went over my hands like your sweater. I obtained gauge for the pattern, but I think what's going on is they don't account for the gauge AFTER being washed, or in your case, what the fabric will do when worn and it's own weight stretches it out. In my opinion, EVERY pattern should list what the gauge should be before AND after being wet blocked if the finished product is intended to be blocked afterwards. And the worst part about my sweater was that it was a super fluffy mohair, so I tried to take it apart but there was just no saving it :') A complete waste of money. Good on your for showing how this kit really worked for you even if it was sent for free!

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yes!!! emphasis on they don’t account for the gauge after being washed! my initial foundation ch and the first row was the same measurement as what the instructions said but the length is way off

    • @quinn799
      @quinn799 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Before/after wash comparisons are the point of gauge in the first place 😭

  • @OkayestChemist
    @OkayestChemist 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I don't know a ton about crochet but I know my way around fiber and this pattern looks like it almost has no structure as written - I'm not surprised at all that this thing grew like 200% the second you put it on. The edits you did to create some structure look pretty cute, but if you don't think you're going to wear it, frog it and make something that you will wear!

  • @ilyily96
    @ilyily96 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A 7mm seems wildly inappropriate for that yarn 🤣 thanks for making me laugh out loud. Hopefully you get more PR packages!
    Maybe some starch or something would help fight gravity and keep it attached to the lining?
    Good for you trying to salvage it, great video!!

  • @Corduroykidd
    @Corduroykidd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I tried dying cotton with avocados and yours came out way more pink than mine. Maybe because I used the skins and not the pits? Also the sweater is so funny. It kinda reminds me of Drew Barrymore's dress in Ever After with the long medieval sleeves and the pink colour.

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I added baking soda to change the ph!

    • @Corduroykidd
      @Corduroykidd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexandria_masse ah, I should have thought of that. I used baking soda when I dyed with black beans to get a more blue green instead of purple.

    n00rvana made her own kit with her own pattern. I think its called the believe top & the believe skirt. You can maybe reach out to her to see how she did it. I also think it shouldn't be shamed to ask other creators for tips on how to get sponsorships.

      in the video I was mainly referring to yarn companies, unfortunately a lot of them only “pay in yarn” or not at all. sorry about not being very specific! since i made this video i’ve had the opportunity to work with other companies (just no yarn companies yet)

  • @marialouise3450

    Is it bad that I kinda dig the sweater? lol I do think the sleeves should be shorter though, and maybe the body too?

  • @PataPtichou
    @PataPtichou 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Was your gauge accurate??

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      yes! i followed their measurements too, the issues came along when it was time to put it on the body, there’s just no way yarn that thin with a 7mm hook could hold a structure

    • @PataPtichou
      @PataPtichou 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@alexandria_masse yeah that's crazy!! Massive design flaw! I've tried a few knit kits from WAK like 6 or 7 years ago, it wasn't as expensive and they were fine, even as a beginner back then. But I started crochet last year and I ckecked out we are knitters and wool of the gang and holy molly the kits are EXPENSIVE for very basic designs

  • @Eropne
    @Eropne 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I adjust the patterns all the time because I feel they never have right measurements. Which is fine when the pattern is free or few euros. But for that prize, no. That's expensive. For that prize, I would expect to have detailed instructions how to crochet the sweater and modify the pattern to fit my body. It should be perfect for being that expensive. Especially if these are targeted to beginners. Not everyone knows how to modify pattern

    • @alexandria_masse
      @alexandria_masse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i absolutely agree! it’s normal to modify patterns for garments because every body is different. the pattern this kit came with was only a few pages long and didn’t have a single photo, for the steep price of 100usd i expected a LOT more

  • @stringcheese6833
    @stringcheese6833 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You did a great job making the best out of a terrible kit. It really seems like they didn't really match the yarn content to the project. Cotton stretches, and it really requires a lot of structure for a garment. To help with further stretching, you could elastic thread to help add some cinch and keep things in place!

    okay but before you made it into a dress, if it was a little longer and dyed black I would wear it lol, BUT obviously this is awful to get as a kit and is no where near what was expected.
