Traitor Guard and Dark Mechanicum feel like the black sheep of Chaos. Squashed in the droves during our stories, but get no army rules except for Legend sheets or one off units.
to be fair, just dirty up or kitbash them. realistically, if you want traitor guard, use guard and cultists as a mixed allies, no one is going to argue about it. dark mechanicum isn't going to happen because they can't even get the CSM mix of daemon and tech done right. those armies may have a small fanbase but they don't carry enough distinctiveness to matter, mechanically.
If they get around bringing the mechanicum fw heresy models to plastic we might see them coming to 40k, though with their current stance that would seem unlikely, but things can change. The reality is that gw have too many spinning plates for doing much of this sort of thing, especially at present where they have a distinct shortage of writing and creative staff as lots have either left to go it alone or long standing staff who have left due retirement. Plus the continuing logistics and production troubles they have. They have a new season of kiĺl team to start soon, a campaign leading to probably anew edition for aos, and the old world coming out over the next year as well as the range refreshing in both aos and 40k, 40k especially with probably dark angels getting a big range update, votann and world eaters getting the 2nd half of their range and probably late in the edition emperor's children.
Really weird how they introduced Votann with very few lore and left them there for like a year. So they are part of the setting, but kinda not linked with it. They just chilling. We have no stories of them, no wars, great campaigns etc...
@@oatlord after thorough research, we have gotten some small additional lore. We got a hearthguard One shoting a Night lord with his concussion gauntlet. The kronus Hegemony in a war with Orks and an ark of omen. The greater Thurian league having cleaned a world of orcs and secured an artefact( chaos then started attacking the League, so a war is going on there). We also have a blood angel strike force fleeling because they didnt want to get anihilated by a Kronus Fleet. I think thats all that was found in the arks of omen books and other random releases.
Well as far as I know they were kinda locked away? Sealed idk they j weren't fucking with anything outside of the galactic core cus of warp shenanigans or something beyond BUT I do know that there was something that was preventing others from getting in their "realm as it were

The rest of the world has some encounters with them, but very few. The main reason nobody really saw them before was that the core is an extremely dangerous place to travel and basically impossible to establish colonies. So most factions didnt care about it(other than orcs and necrons). Plus the leagues worked extremely hard to conceal their true identity to other factions. Using weaker technologies when interacting with them and all. The great rift simply shattered a part of the Leagues, thus they had to spring up into actions as they couldnt just lay back anymore. They had to get proactive.
@@NagosCrit No. Scions are trained from the beginning to be special Forces and are usually pulled from the nobility. The Kasrkin are pulled from the standard Cadian regiments to be given more specific training. The reason they're more liked is because they still have that everyman feel to them, just even more badass then your average Cadian. The scions are kind of dicks due their background of both being from noble stock and being taught from an early age to be emotionless killers.
I always liked Mark Bedford's pewter Stormtroopers more than the plastic Tempestus Scions. Mark Bedford Stormtroopers made for great Inquisitorial Stormtroopers.

eldar exodites are mention for the first chapter of Infinite and the divine. But you're right that they should be brought back and its a damn shame they aren't being featured in the recent setting development. I know GW can work with the dinosaur/lizard models so combining those and eldar units should be a no brainer.
Traitor guard in general. You can stretch a lot of armies in order to play as different factions. For example, with all the teleporting that they do you could easily use the grey knight ruleset to represent some legion of the damned jumoing into real space smd doing their jobs before hopping away. Or what ive d9ne with GSC and turn them into a "Khorne-Stealer Cult" where i use the more melee focus side of the gac book and its emphasis on characters doing awesome things as representation for a mortal cult of Khorne. I have also done a more generic thing of using the imperial guard rules and play traitor guard but theres no way for me to incoude daemons or daemon engines in games with those as kuch as i would like. We've had the kost and the dakned as playable factions before, i think the oast time there were rules printed for them were the imperial armor books from 4th or 5th edition, but the traitor guard represent a giant unseen faction against the imperium that people either never hear about or think are fringe because apparently GW oore studios thinks that traitor guard regiments are more rare than traitor marine chapters based on how many we hear about and even have names for. Theres so much untapped potential for them that could fit a niche for the CSM and Daemon players such as good shooting support outside of obliterators and forgerfiends, and allowing huard to bring daemons and csm could give them staying power, really neat cinematics of bringing grester daemons alongside giant tanks, and give the guard some melee shock troops or just general melee power.
i much prefer the Steel Legion as they come without the unfortunate historical connotations. alas, you'll never see them again due to conflict of interest with the Krieg. I think Steel Legion hits with a better Firefly/Serenity "Browncoats" vibe.
Always thought Exodites should be in the game. Maybe not as a major faction, but a minor one to fill out the world and you can do a lot of interesting things with them: ambushers akin to Genestealers, deep strike shenanigans, magic to manipulate the battlefield. And you cannot convince me that space wizards riding dinosaurs wouldn't sell to at least the model builders

They have non arrogant elves, spirit magic, space tech, and dinosaurs which greatly benefits from our expanded understanding of them. Let's face it, the imperial cult has long since killed humanity, they are no longer human. Besides I can totally see the Exodite elves traveling around in biotech meteors that serves as a backup/extension of their world spirit and a terraforming seed in case something terrible happens to their maiden world.
As far as i got it, the Dark Mechanicum was wiped out during the Horus Heresy, and only some Heretechs with a more spiritual connection are left today, not capable of the great technological achievements and feats of the original. On most of your choices, i agree. I only ever heard about the Severan Dominate from Arch who made a longer video about them. With the Sons of Malice, they SHOULD be more prevalent as they are a key aspect of binding Malal legally into WH40k, but that might also be the reason they are so left aside.
DM were like wiped out, they were driven from mars at the end of the heresy (probably immediately afterwards when they retook mars of they may have abandoned mars without a fight, seeing the writing on the wall) and fled to the Eye of Terror with the traitor legions
I'd say the Lucifer Blacks are more forgotten than the Tempestus Scions. The Lucifers are even better non-augmented humans that protect the Golden Throne.
The Exodites show up for a bit in *The Infinite And The Divine*. I haven't read far into the book but the opening set up has Trazyn Indiana Jones'ing some stuff from them. Doubt they'll show up again later in the book but what little we see of them is good.
Personally I hope that if the dark mecanicum dies make a come back that it's not gonna be chaos related and more focused on xeno tech, AI, and other tech heresy. Or if they do make a dark mecanicum they should also have a traitor guard, and an equivalent of the sororitas. Just full send the emporium but chaos. While I'm here, combine the grey nights, inquisition, assassins, and some other stuff like the arbites into their own cohesive faction.
This is super interesting, especially because if you consider the tapletop, guys like the Harlequins actually have gotten a pretty solid amount of representation for how little they appear in the lore.
Dark Mechanicum did get those Negavolt Cultists & I assume you can paint/convert your Knights to be from a Dark Mechanicum Hellforge. That being said, they’re really underutilized. Maybe they’ll get a release in 10th or at least a detachment in the AdMech codex. Iron Hands really have been overlooked. If the Shattered Legions stories in the HH series weren’t overshadowed by better novels/stories maybe they’d be more prominent. I will say they’ve had a few instances of meta relevance on the tabletop, but nothing long lasting. I really, really, really wish the Exodites would get some love. I still remember a fan army list posted in the old Citadel Journal & that’s it.

The problem with Malice is that he is to similar to Malal. The name is similar, he does basically the same things as Malal, and his followers use the same colours and symbols. But Malal can't be used because to of copyright problems. So to not end up with another copyright dispute they never mention him directly. For example, he was mentioned indirectly in Horus Heresy 8, under the name Mirror of Hatred.
The exodites are also in the Infinite and the Divine, that's who holds the world Trazyn and Orikan keep going back to at the very beginning. Trazyn fights some dino riders.
I remember seeing that Ferrus Mannus might be 'somehow' recovering deep inside Mars. But at the same time both thr Mechanicus and the Iron hands all deny this. That is the one and only way Ferrus is coming back. Dorn also seems done for good? But every time I read about it there's always the 'apparently' dead written in there. Despite his knuckles being in amber and getting carved into by the chapter masters of the imperial fist. All the others have a chance to be around. I think Corvus might have been confirmed to be a shadow raven monster hunting the Word Bearers. But everyone else is just gone. Lion woke up recently, Vulkan is waiting for his Chapter to discover his lost items to come back. Lemen Russ went to the eye of terror but there's nothing much on him. And The Khan is stuck in the webway. So all ofthem have good plausible(?) chances to return.
What do you think about an Exodite army using their World Spirits and Bone Singers to raise armies of wraith constructs? I imagine the Bone Singers and Seers acting a bit like synapse creatures controlling specific units. I also imagine snake like mobile battlements so you can move your firing lines/heavy weapons.
I still mourn the loss of my Inquisitorial Stormtroopers as a Troops choice for the Inquisition to this day. The Inquisitorial Stormtroopers were the backbone of any Radical Daemonhunters armies back in 3rd Edition since they were the only available mandatory Troops choice upon fielding a Daemonhost, Unbound Daemon or Adversaries (Daemon Packs, Greater Daemon, Daemonvessel). Inquisitorial Stormtroopers Veteran Sergeant wielding a Thunder Hammer right out of the Daemonhunters armoury was a sight to behold, and they were great for objective control, loaded up in Rhinos. I have fond memories of my Radical Daemonhunters army, eschewing Grey Knights in favour of the Daemonhosts was unpredictably fun.
Dark Mechanicum are the antagonists along with the Iron Warriors in Rob Sanders' Skitarius and Tech-Priest novels. I'd say they are a big part of the enemy force in Abnett's Titanicus. The main antagonist in Graham McNeill's Forge of Mars novels is a Heretec.
The Inquisition used to have not just one, but two entire dedicated armies of their own back in 3rd Edition, Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters, and the third army, Alien Hunters, was promised countless times, until the Inquisition as a whole was discontinued at the tail end of 5th Edition in favour of the Grey Knights and Sisters of Battle. The Enslavers are another forgotten army. They had their own army list written by Andy Chambers as featured in White Dwarf 292 (UK) - Chapter Approved: Creature Feature at the tail end of 3rd Edition, which was also published on GW website at the time.
It took like 2 years of being in this hobby to realize the iron hands and the imperial fists were different legions - or the iron hands and iron warriors. Somewhere between those three it turned out I had no idea who the iron hands were. So yeah; I agree; Iron hands is the most unknown legion.
I will also like to say, as a fan of the Alpha legion, they are surprisingly given the back seat sooooo many times, and rarely are given proper attention in the games, books, etc, but they are still there unlike some of the others, just an honorable mention.
Exodites also show up in The Infinite and The Divine, albeit in small part. But overall there isn’t much story potential for exodites other than them being damsels in distress. They self exiled from eldar society, they do not want to be involved with galactic affairs unless it’s literally at their doorstep.
Caiphas Cain book 2 has a decent bit with the Scions. He's fairly sure one of the commanding officers he works with is a former Inquisitorial Stormtrooper as well.
I know they're never going to come back, but the Severan Dominate have the best drip in the setting imo. There are kitbashes of them online that look perfect, and I don't think they'd need new rules particularly, they'd just use astra militarum rules. Maybe they're organised a bit differently to reflect Roman legions?
I kinda feel like the Exodite could have replaced the Craftworld eldar as the main "Good Eldar" faction and have the craftworld ships being kinda like crusade like ships for the Phoenix Lords to campaign around and fight specific threats to the maiden worlds (Chaos being the main one, but occasionally fight the Imperium, Orks and Tyranids). Then you can still have the dino-riders eldar and the path-oriented society.
I find it amusing that lorewise, the Raven Guard and especially the Iron Hands have so little in the lore, but for the past few editions have been the chapters with the most competitive rules, to the point where people playing Iron Hands are routinely seen as meta chasers.
The reason Sons of Malice arent as big, is due to Malice/Malal being retconned out of existence due to the creator not being apart of GW anymore, and so now the Sons of Malice are just Chaos Undivided now. Also the Lucifer Blacks are technically the best "Guard" equivalent soldiers, not Tempestus Scions haha
Headcanon: Tzeentch didn't win the Great Game and turned back because he realized all this would do is finally summon Malal, the entropy of chaos as we know it.
Just bring back Malal to 40k and rename him (or it) as Malaise the Malignant One. Also, the lesser daemons of Malaise should be the Furies while Malaise should have greater daemons in the form of the Doombringers or something similar.
As an iron handa player. We do have one chatacter in modern 40k; Iron Father Ferrios. Buuut thats about it. All of our lore is 30k, with Shadrak Meduson and Iron Father Autek Mor. And it sucks! What lore we have is deeply interesting. Cybernetic necromancy, necron c'tan on medusa, the helfathers and the conspiracy that suround them and the mechanicus. There's so much interesting lore already there, the Shattered Legions in the wake of the Dropsite Massacre were led by the Iron Hands, and the Shattered Legions NEARLY KILLED HORUS, FULGRIM, AND MORTARION MULTIPLE TIMES. Fuck its so frusterating. We dont have a singe unique unit outside of Ferrios. And 10th got rid of our sub-factions rules, and more importantly, our CHARACTER DREADNOUGHTS. Religating the Iron hands to be; Space Marines but Worse due to unit choice.

Sorry about the late post, but i think there is some ownership issues with malal and i believe some bad breakup issues that is holding back any sort of fleshing of the lore. Its not looking good from what i remember.
A sad thing about the rivalry between the ODST and Spartans Is because of the spartan 4 program a lot of the best odst got turned into Spartans and as a result of that ODST dont feature as prominently in the lore anymore. Still I've always thought the rivalry was funny it's so obvious which one is better master chief as a child with no armor beat the fuck of 3 of them with just his hands

None of these factions are forgotten. They are all present. Even if only just. Forgotten would be something like the Slaan, Chaos Eldar, Tarelians or Rebel Grots
Damn the tempestus scions and the ODST comparison is hitting me hard. Makes me wanna know more and hope GW does something with that unit. They're a cool concept.
So: Overall comments. 1: Yes. We need more dark mech stuff. There's like... three? novels total that have them as the antagonists (Calgar's Fury, Dark Adeptus, and Sepulturum), and frankly they're all just slightly more subtle and less sorcery oriented tzeentch bois. Would seriously like to see them expanded upon. 2: Of the four Iron Hands novels out there, I actually find myself cheering for them to be wiped out. Their use of allies as bait makes the Marines Malevolent seem compassionate in comparison (they sit around and sacrifice an entire Raven Guard company to orks so they don't lose any Marines), though I suppose the fact that the "chapter master" before Stronos was pretty much a heretic from page 1 does colour my perception of them. 3: Tempestus Scions. Scions in my experience have very little personality to speak of. The closest I really see any of them being deemed remotely as human is one of them momentarily breaking character in The Warmaster because something funny was said in her presence. Said Scion gets shredded before the day is out. They're used as either comedy pieces (Gaunt ordering his Scions to literally face a wall) or as troops that get wiped out when things get serious (a squad of them lose their minds when a Necron Pariah shows up in the third Cain book).
You mention the Scions, well to be fair they replaced at some point the Kasrkin, which even make it worst, GW suppost to throw other part to put a new one and then didnt do a thing with them, big face palm.
From what I got from their lore is that the dark mechanicum doesn't like cooperating and prefer to hoard everything they have to themselves and themselves alone it's pretty much why most dark mechanicum groups tend to usually plague minor sectors like the calixis sector, stay in their little hell-forge world or have been already exterminated by the imperium and only their devices remains in fact chaos skitarii tend to be as equipped as the average lost and the damned soldier because they even go as far as to take the skitarii gears from them not to mention that they only care about whatever pet project and experiment they're currently doing soo much so that it's pretty much why CSM always lord them over because otherwise they'll waste time and resources in whatever pet project they're doing that will probably end up with killing them rather than use those resources and time to arm and supply the mortal forces of chaos in their war against the imperium and this is ignoring the hereteks that have been driven insane by their own experiments at least that's what I got when reading the lore EDIT: also about malice i don't think he's a chaos god I feel like he's sort of like vashtorr in that he's a major warp entity unaffiliated with the chaos gods
Dark Mechanicum should a no-brainer. Even if to start with they just made conversion/upgrade kits for generic troop units like Skitarii and Kataphrons it would be a start. But, because GW won't create rules without models, folks are stuck playing their converted Dark Mech units with Admech rules 😑
I kinda want Lucifer Blacks to get some stuff in the current timeline considering (I've only heard this) they are supposed to be the non transhuman equivalent of custodes.

Poor Leagues of Votann, they were gone from the setting for more than 20 years and when they do come back, neither GW nor Black Library has any narrative for them. Yet when Lion comes back in a campaign book, Black Library has a tie-in novel ready to go. A year after Leagues release, and still nothing from Black Library.

Traitor guard in general. You can stretch a lot of armies in order to play as different factions. For example, with all the teleporting that they do you could easily use the grey knight ruleset to represent some legion of the damned jumoing into real space smd doing their jobs before hopping away.
Or what ive d9ne with GSC and turn them into a "Khorne-Stealer Cult" where i use the more melee focus side of the gac book and its emphasis on characters doing awesome things as representation for a mortal cult of Khorne. I have also done a more generic thing of using the imperial guard rules and play traitor guard but theres no way for me to incoude daemons or daemon engines in games with those as kuch as i would like.
We've had the kost and the dakned as playable factions before, i think the oast time there were rules printed for them were the imperial armor books from 4th or 5th edition, but the traitor guard represent a giant unseen faction against the imperium that people either never hear about or think are fringe because apparently GW oore studios thinks that traitor guard regiments are more rare than traitor marine chapters based on how many we hear about and even have names for. Theres so much untapped potential for them that could fit a niche for the CSM and Daemon players such as good shooting support outside of obliterators and forgerfiends, and allowing huard to bring daemons and csm could give them staying power, really neat cinematics of bringing grester daemons alongside giant tanks, and give the guard some melee shock troops or just general melee power.
I loved the look of Kasrkin and Steel Legion. You can get the same Steel Legion vibe from Krieg though.
i much prefer the Steel Legion as they come without the unfortunate historical connotations. alas, you'll never see them again due to conflict of interest with the Krieg. I think Steel Legion hits with a better Firefly/Serenity "Browncoats" vibe.
Always thought Exodites should be in the game. Maybe not as a major faction, but a minor one to fill out the world and you can do a lot of interesting things with them: ambushers akin to Genestealers, deep strike shenanigans, magic to manipulate the battlefield. And you cannot convince me that space wizards riding dinosaurs wouldn't sell to at least the model builders

@@SadisticDouble don't take it too seriously. I know no more on them than you. They have so much untapped potential that makes them perfect for a protagonist faction. They have non arrogant elves, spirit magic, space tech, and dinosaurs which greatly benefits from our expanded understanding of them. Let's face it, the imperial cult has long since killed humanity, they are no longer human. Besides I can totally see the Exodite elves traveling around in biotech meteors that serves as a backup/extension of their world spirit and a terraforming seed in case something terrible happens to their maiden world.
As far as i got it, the Dark Mechanicum was wiped out during the Horus Heresy, and only some Heretechs with a more spiritual connection are left today, not capable of the great technological achievements and feats of the original. On most of your choices, i agree.
I only ever heard about the Severan Dominate from Arch who made a longer video about them.
With the Sons of Malice, they SHOULD be more prevalent as they are a key aspect of binding Malal legally into WH40k, but that might also be the reason they are so left aside.
DM were like wiped out, they were driven from mars at the end of the heresy (probably immediately afterwards when they retook mars of they may have abandoned mars without a fight, seeing the writing on the wall) and fled to the Eye of Terror with the traitor legions
I'd say the Lucifer Blacks are more forgotten than the Tempestus Scions. The Lucifers are even better non-augmented humans that protect the Golden Throne.

The Exodites show up for a bit in *The Infinite And The Divine*. I haven't read far into the book but the opening set up has Trazyn Indiana Jones'ing some stuff from them. Doubt they'll show up again later in the book but what little we see of them is good.
Personally I hope that if the dark mecanicum dies make a come back that it's not gonna be chaos related and more focused on xeno tech, AI, and other tech heresy.
Or if they do make a dark mecanicum they should also have a traitor guard, and an equivalent of the sororitas. Just full send the emporium but chaos.
While I'm here, combine the grey nights, inquisition, assassins, and some other stuff like the arbites into their own cohesive faction.
This is super interesting, especially because if you consider the tapletop, guys like the Harlequins actually have gotten a pretty solid amount of representation for how little they appear in the lore.
Dark Mechanicum did get those Negavolt Cultists & I assume you can paint/convert your Knights to be from a Dark Mechanicum Hellforge. That being said, they’re really underutilized. Maybe they’ll get a release in 10th or at least a detachment in the AdMech codex.
Iron Hands really have been overlooked. If the Shattered Legions stories in the HH series weren’t overshadowed by better novels/stories maybe they’d be more prominent. I will say they’ve had a few instances of meta relevance on the tabletop, but nothing long lasting.
I really, really, really wish the Exodites would get some love. I still remember a fan army list posted in the old Citadel Journal & that’s it.

The problem with Malice is that he is to similar to Malal.
The name is similar, he does basically the same things as Malal, and his followers use the same colours and symbols.
But Malal can't be used because to of copyright problems.
So to not end up with another copyright dispute they never mention him directly.
For example, he was mentioned indirectly in Horus Heresy 8, under the name Mirror of Hatred.
The exodites are also in the Infinite and the Divine, that's who holds the world Trazyn and Orikan keep going back to at the very beginning. Trazyn fights some dino riders.
The sad thing about iron hands is that there's some real good stories with them but there's fuck all done with them.
IKR?! They have a VERY unique culture compared to other chapters with the clans of Medusa and such but we just never get much with them
I remember seeing that Ferrus Mannus might be 'somehow' recovering deep inside Mars. But at the same time both thr Mechanicus and the Iron hands all deny this. That is the one and only way Ferrus is coming back. Dorn also seems done for good? But every time I read about it there's always the 'apparently' dead written in there. Despite his knuckles being in amber and getting carved into by the chapter masters of the imperial fist.
All the others have a chance to be around. I think Corvus might have been confirmed to be a shadow raven monster hunting the Word Bearers. But everyone else is just gone. Lion woke up recently, Vulkan is waiting for his Chapter to discover his lost items to come back. Lemen Russ went to the eye of terror but there's nothing much on him. And The Khan is stuck in the webway. So all ofthem have good plausible(?) chances to return.

What do you think about an Exodite army using their World Spirits and Bone Singers to raise armies of wraith constructs? I imagine the Bone Singers and Seers acting a bit like synapse creatures controlling specific units. I also imagine snake like mobile battlements so you can move your firing lines/heavy weapons.
I always wanted a dinosaur army.

I still mourn the loss of my Inquisitorial Stormtroopers as a Troops choice for the Inquisition to this day. The Inquisitorial Stormtroopers were the backbone of any Radical Daemonhunters armies back in 3rd Edition since they were the only available mandatory Troops choice upon fielding a Daemonhost, Unbound Daemon or Adversaries (Daemon Packs, Greater Daemon, Daemonvessel). Inquisitorial Stormtroopers Veteran Sergeant wielding a Thunder Hammer right out of the Daemonhunters armoury was a sight to behold, and they were great for objective control, loaded up in Rhinos. I have fond memories of my Radical Daemonhunters army, eschewing Grey Knights in favour of the Daemonhosts was unpredictably fun.

Dark Mechanicum are the antagonists along with the Iron Warriors in Rob Sanders' Skitarius and Tech-Priest novels. I'd say they are a big part of the enemy force in Abnett's Titanicus. The main antagonist in Graham McNeill's Forge of Mars novels is a Heretec.
The Inquisition used to have not just one, but two entire dedicated armies of their own back in 3rd Edition, Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters, and the third army, Alien Hunters, was promised countless times, until the Inquisition as a whole was discontinued at the tail end of 5th Edition in favour of the Grey Knights and Sisters of Battle.
The Enslavers are another forgotten army. They had their own army list written by Andy Chambers as featured in White Dwarf 292 (UK) - Chapter Approved: Creature Feature at the tail end of 3rd Edition, which was also published on GW website at the time.

It took like 2 years of being in this hobby to realize the iron hands and the imperial fists were different legions - or the iron hands and iron warriors. Somewhere between those three it turned out I had no idea who the iron hands were. So yeah; I agree; Iron hands is the most unknown legion.

I will also like to say, as a fan of the Alpha legion, they are surprisingly given the back seat sooooo many times, and rarely are given proper attention in the games, books, etc, but they are still there unlike some of the others, just an honorable mention.
Exodites also show up in The Infinite and The Divine, albeit in small part. But overall there isn’t much story potential for exodites other than them being damsels in distress. They self exiled from eldar society, they do not want to be involved with galactic affairs unless it’s literally at their doorstep.
Caiphas Cain book 2 has a decent bit with the Scions.
He's fairly sure one of the commanding officers he works with is a former Inquisitorial Stormtrooper as well.
The exodites (or better one exodite) literally got his own animated short series.

I know they're never going to come back, but the Severan Dominate have the best drip in the setting imo. There are kitbashes of them online that look perfect, and I don't think they'd need new rules particularly, they'd just use astra militarum rules. Maybe they're organised a bit differently to reflect Roman legions?
I kinda feel like the Exodite could have replaced the Craftworld eldar as the main "Good Eldar" faction and have the craftworld ships being kinda like crusade like ships for the Phoenix Lords to campaign around and fight specific threats to the maiden worlds (Chaos being the main one, but occasionally fight the Imperium, Orks and Tyranids). Then you can still have the dino-riders eldar and the path-oriented society.
The Iron Hands are in Battlefleet Gothic 2. They regularly get their system taken over by Ork pirates.
I find it amusing that lorewise, the Raven Guard and especially the Iron Hands have so little in the lore, but for the past few editions have been the chapters with the most competitive rules, to the point where people playing Iron Hands are routinely seen as meta chasers.

The reason Sons of Malice arent as big, is due to Malice/Malal being retconned out of existence due to the creator not being apart of GW anymore, and so now the Sons of Malice are just Chaos Undivided now.
Also the Lucifer Blacks are technically the best "Guard" equivalent soldiers, not Tempestus Scions haha
I ran the sons of malice back in 7th when I started, and I still run them now.
Exodites are in the Infinite and the Divine, albeit briefly. Trazyn does a little trolling with them and the dinosaurs at the very start of the book.

Headcanon: Tzeentch didn't win the Great Game and turned back because he realized all this would do is finally summon Malal, the entropy of chaos as we know it.
Just bring back Malal to 40k and rename him (or it) as Malaise the Malignant One. Also, the lesser daemons of Malaise should be the Furies while Malaise should have greater daemons in the form of the Doombringers or something similar.
Pretty sure the sons of malice were made as a simple call back to malal, who inst canon since GW doesn't own the rights to the character.

As an iron handa player. We do have one chatacter in modern 40k; Iron Father Ferrios.
Buuut thats about it. All of our lore is 30k, with Shadrak Meduson and Iron Father Autek Mor.
And it sucks! What lore we have is deeply interesting. Cybernetic necromancy, necron c'tan on medusa, the helfathers and the conspiracy that suround them and the mechanicus.
There's so much interesting lore already there, the Shattered Legions in the wake of the Dropsite Massacre were led by the Iron Hands, and the Shattered Legions NEARLY KILLED HORUS, FULGRIM, AND MORTARION MULTIPLE TIMES.
Fuck its so frusterating. We dont have a singe unique unit outside of Ferrios. And 10th got rid of our sub-factions rules, and more importantly, our CHARACTER DREADNOUGHTS. Religating the Iron hands to be; Space Marines but Worse due to unit choice.
I feel like the Sisters of Silence are getting added to this list

Sorry about the late post, but i think there is some ownership issues with malal and i believe some bad breakup issues that is holding back any sort of fleshing of the lore. Its not looking good from what i remember.
A sad thing about the rivalry between the ODST and Spartans Is because of the spartan 4 program a lot of the best odst got turned into Spartans and as a result of that ODST dont feature as prominently in the lore anymore. Still I've always thought the rivalry was funny it's so obvious which one is better master chief as a child with no armor beat the fuck of 3 of them with just his hands

None of these factions are forgotten. They are all present. Even if only just. Forgotten would be something like the Slaan, Chaos Eldar, Tarelians or Rebel Grots

Damn the tempestus scions and the ODST comparison is hitting me hard. Makes me wanna know more and hope GW does something with that unit. They're a cool concept.
So: Overall comments.
1: Yes. We need more dark mech stuff. There's like... three? novels total that have them as the antagonists (Calgar's Fury, Dark Adeptus, and Sepulturum), and frankly they're all just slightly more subtle and less sorcery oriented tzeentch bois. Would seriously like to see them expanded upon.
2: Of the four Iron Hands novels out there, I actually find myself cheering for them to be wiped out. Their use of allies as bait makes the Marines Malevolent seem compassionate in comparison (they sit around and sacrifice an entire Raven Guard company to orks so they don't lose any Marines), though I suppose the fact that the "chapter master" before Stronos was pretty much a heretic from page 1 does colour my perception of them.
3: Tempestus Scions. Scions in my experience have very little personality to speak of. The closest I really see any of them being deemed remotely as human is one of them momentarily breaking character in The Warmaster because something funny was said in her presence. Said Scion gets shredded before the day is out. They're used as either comedy pieces (Gaunt ordering his Scions to literally face a wall) or as troops that get wiped out when things get serious (a squad of them lose their minds when a Necron Pariah shows up in the third Cain book).

The Dark Mechanicum were definitely the main antagonists in the novel Mechanicum.
You mention the Scions, well to be fair they replaced at some point the Kasrkin, which even make it worst, GW suppost to throw other part to put a new one and then didnt do a thing with them, big face palm.
From what I got from their lore is that the dark mechanicum doesn't like cooperating and prefer to hoard everything they have to themselves and themselves alone it's pretty much why most dark mechanicum groups tend to usually plague minor sectors like the calixis sector, stay in their little hell-forge world or have been already exterminated by the imperium and only their devices remains in fact chaos skitarii tend to be as equipped as the average lost and the damned soldier because they even go as far as to take the skitarii gears from them not to mention that they only care about whatever pet project and experiment they're currently doing soo much so that it's pretty much why CSM always lord them over because otherwise they'll waste time and resources in whatever pet project they're doing that will probably end up with killing them rather than use those resources and time to arm and supply the mortal forces of chaos in their war against the imperium and this is ignoring the hereteks that have been driven insane by their own experiments at least that's what I got when reading the lore
EDIT: also about malice i don't think he's a chaos god I feel like he's sort of like vashtorr in that he's a major warp entity unaffiliated with the chaos gods

Dark Mechanicum should a no-brainer. Even if to start with they just made conversion/upgrade kits for generic troop units like Skitarii and Kataphrons it would be a start. But, because GW won't create rules without models, folks are stuck playing their converted Dark Mech units with Admech rules 😑
The factions not touched by the GW that much tend to stir exitement among the fans.

Poor Leagues of Votann, they were gone from the setting for more than 20 years and when they do come back, neither GW nor Black Library has any narrative for them. Yet when Lion comes back in a campaign book, Black Library has a tie-in novel ready to go. A year after Leagues release, and still nothing from Black Library.
