It's amazing that the man who claimed to be familiar with East Pakistan like a palm of his hand turn out to be a blindman in his own backyard. After listening to the shouts of "shame" "shame", he decided to say goodbye to the world of womanizing and drinking all day. An Arab scholar made a sad observation about the Hindu mind during the Arab invasion. He observed that the Hindus seem to know all while staying ignorant about the outside world. That observation must be read to all soldiers of Islam in Pakistan---a failed and bankrupt state. Ignorance of history carried cost back then and will carry cost in remaining Pakistan. History, please.

Your source (Stanley Wolpert) offered a different explanation, which you did not mention. The main idea behind Wolpert's analysis is that Mujib was really not in a position to say anything before first gauging the mood of his own people, as to what his people really wanted.
