Living in the UK there isn't much out there for debt repayment and budgeting that's useful, so I've watched a lot of American channels. You come across as so personable and down to earth, it's easy to relate to you, and reminds me being a mum and organising life can be tough, but we are all totally smashing it doing the best we can. Thanks for a great channel, advice and keeping it real 👍

Recent university graduate here 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m in love with these types of videos! I’m swimming in debt and I’ve been implementing these small steps myself. Makes a huge difference. I think we need more youtubers to talk about money and break the silence. Thank you for all that you do!!

This is a great video! 27 years ago I had 12000 credit card debt. I have lived frugally since...we paid that off....and I have been obsessed with saving money. Paid cash for my kids college and retired at 50....I still love being frugal and all the wonderful vacations and savings it has given me. Keep it going! You have a beautiful family!

Top tip on the flyaways with the makeup brush! Piano lessons are a great investment. If, later in life, they want to sing or play guitar or fiddle, they will already have music theory and understand chords. Feel well soon, Lydia. I hate using money I’ve saved, even in my emergency fund but I get it: this is the
Rainy day I prepped for. It’s not a set back, it’s a victory.
You’re doing great, Lydia. I’m proud of you, too. And, your hair looks wonderful.

You're my favorite TH-camr cause you're so sweet but realistic. I count a success for today due to I needed to get my wisdom teeth removed and actually went to the dentist's before the appointment to ask if I could save money anywhere and they said it's not the extraction it's the drug they give me that's expensive; come day of the surgery I live 10 min away so I walked and said no one was gonna pick me up so instead of putting me to sleep they HAD to give me local anesthesia and that easily saved me like close to 1000 dollars. Did they take the time to give me that option due to my money concern's? No. But did I force them to save me money by being stubborn? Yes. Yes I did.

I started taking piano lessons this year, at the age of 56. I have wanted to learn for several years. Finally decided to take the plunge this year. But it is going really slow--even though I am practicing a lot. My memory is not all that great, and it is discouraging.

I loved the long vlog and all the sharing of tips for home and family. My kiddos are all grown, I see my grands sporadically but there is still something I learn from you in your gentle, chill way of delivery. Hello from Texas. I've watched you for a while and love your common sense advice with a healthy dose of humor. In 2017 our home flooded during Harvey. We rebuilt and on 9/19 we lost everything in Tropical Storm Imelda. For eight weeks we have been homeless, living with friends. Today we began the process of purchasing another home. But it's half the size and half the cost of our flooded home. That is in part because of your message. Having a lot does not matter if you are in debt. We wanted better so we are committed to living with less and we will be debt free soon. Thank you for what you do. Hugs from Houston.

I want to say to those people that say they are doing things and it doesn't feel like they are getting anywhere. Just think how much further in debt you would be if you were not trying. Even if you have to use that emergency fund on something that you didn't plan to. What would you have done if you didn't have it. Not doing anything will just cause extra stress and like you talked about in one of your other videos, a lot of times it will cost you even more if you have to borrow money. DON"T give up!!!!

I have a ton of bell peppers from the garden, pre-chopped. Saves a ton of time during cooking and lets me add veggies to dishes I normally wouldn’t. And I’ve recently started doing onions as well. Since I may use only half for a recipe, I’ll chop the rest and freeze. Next time it’s ready to just pop in the pan.

It’s true it sucks to be knocked backwards to saving that energy fund again. 😣 It helps to realize everyone goes through this. We have a fun excursion coming up the first week of December we have saved up and are cash flowing our trip to Florida to see my son and his wife’s first house. One way we are saving money is packing our lunch for the first day of our trip. We are going to splurge on restaurants with our family so skipping on the restaurant on the way down is an easy savings. ❤️ Thanks for showing us your freezer food. I hate throwing excess veggies out cause we didn’t eat them. They are going in my freezer for now on. 😄👍

I used to wash out baggies and do some of the other more frugal things you do when my children were little. I made breakfast burritos in bulk and froze them for quick breakfast. I did all this so I could stay home with my kids. We drove 10 year old vehicles that we paid cash for. Just lots of things to save.

Chop, peel, blanch, layout on cookie sheet to freeze, once frozen transfer to freezer containers and store in freezer. Then just cook them as you would. You can make homemade frozen french fries, hash browns etc.

Piano lessons with a teacher (not virtual)is key and money well spent. It builds character as well and it's something that they can use in the future for all kinds of music and instruments and using it to serve others. But if you have trouble paying for it, then stop temporarily. I think taking the winter off from basketball could be a wonderful treat for all of you right now. It's okay. It's a season. Sometimes you need a break, get recharged and then you can revisit it or something new in the future. We had coop classes for many years and then we just stopped for 2 years - time and being burnt out. When we got back involved, it was a different season with slightly older kids and we were ready for it.

Lydia! I have a small but big update I wanted to share with you.
Our saving up for a new HVAC unit in our home will be complete next month. All $9k of my DH's dental work will be completed by March (cash flowed---been doing one crown every couple months for a year), our small but cash funded vacation is after that and, yes we have our emergency fund, cash envelopes and a % going to retirement. That said, here's the update: In three days, our mortgage will officially be in the 5 digit range. Yeah! We have been making small extra payments for awhile and will continue to do so, but to see that # go from $100,xxx to $99,xxx.....is a wow moment. Six digits to five.
All of that progress on less than $50k, a year and you are one of the ones that keep me motivated. THANK YOU!

So true about the emergency fund, have found over the yrs that once you can buy yourself a little breathing room it does increase the amount of money you can save. Also the amount you are spending for lessons is just for a while not forever. Once those are over it means you will have more money that can be save. Need to always look at the big picture along with the present expenses.

Good video like usual. You talk about piano and the cost per week not being too bad. You are buying teaching of skills that you find worthwhile. On the other hand, one way I look at expenses is doing the reverse, for example, what is the cost of grabbing a soda to drink every time I'm out? What is the cost of paper towels? But not just per week/month, but per year and then multiplied by ten. I see it as for every $2 routine expense I can cut every week, I don't spend $100 a year, but the whopper is $1,000 in ten years. By making choices about where you spend your money you are controlling it. Piano is a skill you want for your kids, but you are also giving them the skill to know rags are ok and that they don't need a paper towel. Hope you feel better. I also loved you showing the leftovers tutorial! People don't understand how little things add up.

In the past month our emergency fund has been depleted between a dew claw disaster with our dog and a rattling noise from our car. I'm thankful we could pay for them. I'm still like, "dang we have zero in the emergency fund again". I guess at least we had a fund to cover things and now we just build it back up. Now I'm nervous that if something else happens we won't have money for it.

It definately sucks when ur ef us constantly depleted. But i worked part time to keep my hand in when the kuds were young. All i did wS cover the childcare when i had 2 BUT i knew i wanted to keep my job and my kids would go to school and eventually we would be better iff. Same with our ef. Every month we DIDNT have an emergency we edged forward. When we got unexpected extra work we edged forward a bit more. I was growing money management skills for when we did get somewhere. Life isnt easy still but i have grateful children who value every penny they get to earn because we can now pay for some of the chores and we are all used to delaying our wants and parking them on a wishlist. Dont lose hope guys!

My kids are now 19 and 21. My advice to all the younger ladies is to not feel like you need to pay for several activities for each kid. My younger child (daughter) wanted to do everything. My son wanted to do nothing. I forced him to do all sorts of activities and he never enjoyed any of them. He is introverted and hated group activities. I should have understood because I am similar, but I thought I would be hurting him if I didn’t give him all of these experiences. My daughter loved everything, but we spent too much. Both of my kids are in college and doing well, but they didn’t need so many extracurricular activities. 😕

I just found out you can buy a container of pomegranate seeds at walmart.
The cost per ounce of actual seeds is not that much higher than the cost of full pomegranates when you subtract the weight of pith/skin. Even cheaper when you subtract the amount of time/mess involved. Even more worth it if you have arthritis or mobility/dexterity issues.
I used to feel bad/guilty/lazy for making purchases like this, now I think about how Lydia would say not to waste food or tell me its ok to make choices that make my life easier.

It's to help with teaching finances. The chores, i believe shouldn't be paid, because they have to contribute to the house. If they want extra money, they have to figure it out. It has helped thier entrepenerial spirit, and them buying thier wants, i don't have to field mommy i want questions. They have cash, they can buy what they want with it, so they know my answer. Love your videos, watched for a long time. Thanks for ideas and inspiration.

Love my clothes horse, had it since I was 20. Those metal hangers with about 12 clips on each are great for socks and lingerie. You can double up on the hooks so two hangers can hold about 48 items. They do take a while to dry, maybe two days.

I have a tip for all of your viewers! Please y'all, when it is "4H season", arrange to buy 1/2 butchered cow. If you can't afford that much you and a co-worker can get together and buy 1/4 together. I'm telling you...totally worth it!

Great tips! Lydia, how much do you pay your kids per chore?

    • @TheRealLydiaSenn
      @TheRealLydiaSenn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It depends on the chore and the age. Start small, both in chore and amount and add as they get older.

You can rinse and save your meat bag on the freezer so it doesn’t get gross or used for anything else

Many people forget when working finances out that monthly does not mean every 4 weeks. There are 62 weeks in the year and those extra 4 weeks reduces the cost when looking at something as a weekly cost.

    • @TheRealLydiaSenn
      @TheRealLydiaSenn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

52 weeks- but yes. However you usually have some times you don’t meet for holidays etc.

Sorry I didn’t explain properly. I meant when looking at the cost of ANYTHING not piano lessons in particular. Any monthly costs which are regularly paid out so you know what they are really costing you monthly.

Regarding freezing veggies: Whenever I see frozen chopped onions at the grocery store I just laugh. I suppose there's a customer out there but it's not me! Regarding stew meat: I once asked a butcher which roast I should get for stew and he showed me, then cut it for me- keeping the cheaper roast price on the package. That was so nice!!! I felt like a fancy lady having the butcher cut my meat! lol

Not everyone has full use of their hands to chop veggies. So having frozen chopped onions as an option at the grocery store can be a blessing to some people.
