@@ganjarsetiawanworld As a Vepsian, I have to tell you that our lands had never been a part of Finland. We are related to Finns by language, yes, but since we are Orthodox Christians, we are more culturally closer to Russians and we've been a part of the Russian state for as long as it has existed.

@@yumallah Interesting. Thousands of Vepsian refugees in Finland thought otherwise. Also, there's eastern Orthodox church in Finland. Didn't know that after Stalin's oppressions yowards Vepsians, Ingrians, Karelians and other Finnic peoples, and the communist rule, the orthodox church even mattered that much to you guys
@@yumallah It's true. Vepsians have never been part of Finnish state, which is an independent country of another tribe. A state is a more of a modern invention anyway. It'd be another question altogether whether a Vepsian state could exist instead of Russian over there, whether it'd be practical at all. But uh... how well has Vepsian as a language been preserved at all? Although the girl does not speak any Vepsian in the video, her gentle disposition and affinity towards nature is a lot alike us Estonians and Finns here. How much of the traditions and memories of your ancestors have been preserved? What is there for Estonians to do to help Vepsians preserve Vepsian? This is a task that bears a great importance for us the Finno-Ugric cultures. One should see through that Finns used to be quite more influential in the areas between the Urals and the Baltic sea, that we used to be diplomats for the Rus (vikings) and not at all a low class of citizens, even higher than many Slavic tribes.
Vepsians are basically eastern finns, northwestern russians/balts/eastern finns are all pretty much identical genetically, so the overlap of phenotypes is expected. Don't forget that Galindians lived all over the territory of Novgorod republic and even further south, there is a lot of Baltic genetic influence in that area.
Most Russians, Belarusians, Estonians, Lithuanians, Latvians, and Veps all look approximately the same. You will probably hear from them saying that they don't, but genetic studies show that they are barely distinguishable. In genetic terms, Finns, Mordvins, and North Russians are a bit different (more North Asian). Ukrainians are a bit more southern.
Actually they both look very different and are genetically very different. Northern Russians are easily distinguishable from Finns and Balts in autosomal tests. Northwestern Europeans are much closer to each other than Northern Russians are to Finns. A Englishman is closer to a Swede than a Northern Russian is to a Finn. But you wouldn't say that Swedes and Anglos are indistinguishable, would you? In regards to phenotypes, Russians, Belarusians, and Lithuanians look different from Latvians and Finns. The difference is mainly in the color of the eyes and eyebrows. Russians tend to have thick eyebrows and darker eyes, whereas Finns are almost always blue eyed with sparse brows.
