Pain- pain is an unpleasant feeling, which makes us uncomfortable and reduces the physical as well as mental alertness. Although pain is also useful for us because it acts as a warning signal and it warns about something uncommon inside or outside our body. If the pain is minor it may be tolerated but if the pain becomes severe it has to be managed at earliest.
Analgesic- Analgesics are the drug which is used to get relief of pain. Although there is no such drug which completely removes or reduce the pain by its root. The analgesic drug only suppresses the sensation of pain or increase the threshold of it. The reason for pain perception is the genesis of cyclooxygenase (COX). COX is of 02 main type- I and II. The main target for NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is to selectively inhibit the COX-II
In the hot plate method, we use heat as the main stimulus or source of pain. Mice are the choice of animal for these experiments. The hot plate is a device having boundary on the outer side and a plate which get heated by a heating coil from inside. Mice are placed one by one on this apparatus (hot-plate) which temperature is kept constant by a regulator, that is around 55-degree centigrade and the licking the paw, jumping reaction of animal are recorded as the endpoint of the experiment. Analgesic increase the reaction time. Eddy and Leimbach were the first to describe this method in 1953 so this apparatus is also known as Eddy’s hot plate.
