I repeat my self! Szeryng is the best of all the violinist I have heard in life…Paganin/Bramhs and Sibelius from 1955 to ca.1975/80.

I feel privileged to have attended the first modern performance of this concerto in the Royal Festival Hall, London. Henryk Szeryng was the soloist on that occasion too.

there was a great hype about this first perfomance, which was probably influenced by Szeryng. A man with a childish character, at least, if you didn´t call him " professor ". Once Klemperer didn´t call him professor. Szeryng insisted to be called professor. So Klemperer asked him, at which university did you get this title. Szeryngs
reply:: Mexico. Klempere laught and said : MEXICO ! I think a violinist like Ricci was much more humble and sympathetic ! And played Paganini more demonic, Szeryng plays like being at a competition - beware of false notes.!!! But he lacks this atmosphere of mystic excitement !

@@manfred4766 I remember seeing that from London in 1970s - would be great if there was footage.

    6:36 onwards is wonderful.
It sounds like he is playing on a Stradivarius. Does anyone know? Would be very interesting.

It is the Leduc Guarneri del Gesu, 1744, and one of the best examples. This is a classic example of when a Guarneri Is better than a Stradivarius.

CONCERTI 3-6 ARE THE OFTEN OVERLOOKED GEMS OF THE PAGANINI REPERTORY. I REMEMBER THE LATE, GREAT MUSICOLOGIST, DR. KARL HAAS, PLAYING THE 3rd CONCERTO'S ADAGIO. SZERYING WAS THE FIRST TO RECORD IT, & SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVEN'T FOUND A BETTER PERFORMANCE. SZERYING NEVER LOOKED LIKE A VIOLINIST TO ME. HE LOOKED MORE LIKE AN ATTORNEY OR CPA. RICCI ALSO NEVER LOOKED LIKE A VIOLINIST BUT A PRIZE FIGHTER LIKE ROCKY MARCIANO. EUGENE FODOR LOOKED LIKE A SURFER. PERLMAN A BAKER. HEIFETZ A BUSINESSMAN. WHO LOOKED THE MOST LIKE A VIOLINIST? EINSTEIN & LARRY FINE.

I wonder how many people in the world are capable of playing this concerto...

This Concerto is really ungrateful and difficult...the music is so terrible as Paganini's music can be... but admire the style, the incredible intonation and the classical and clean sound of Szeryng... He was a real Artist!!

Great playing, but musically this piece is rather boring and non- interesting. No wonder that just the first D-major concerto is usually played and the third movement (campanella) from the second one. The other four concertos are rather just set of technical circus-like exercises on rather primitive and easily anticipated musical background, without any inspiring musical ideas ...
