Carol Jacoi has explained this extremely well. Thank you for this inspiring talk. Although the painting is fascinating the truth behind it, at least for women not as lucky as Annie Miller, is bitter. Life...

Thank you for this excellent video. The narration of the social and artistic history is fascinating and adds a great deal to understanding the Pre-Raphaelite’s perception of women.

I don't think it's an accident that she's looking out the window at nature when she experiences her awakening.
Certainly, a romantic & pre-raphaelite idea (& also a truth) that we respond to nature & the natural world with an awakening of the spirit within us.

She may have eluded Holman Hunt's hopes of marriage, but I'm not sure how marrying a captain, having two children and dying at 90 is eluding the narratives written for her by society?

I feel like it’s really the opposite, she chose to marry someone in her own class instead of Hunt, who is above her. She definitely chose not to defy Victorian society

How she found a connection between the closed books and thus her being uneducated and having her room payed is ludacris.
