  • Blinky or solid? When it comes to bike lights, what's your preference? Solid white on the front and red on the back, or blinking? Here's how I deal with that age-old bike-commute questions.
Also, we look at some other options for keeping your bike lit well at night, including Beryl's cool Laserlight, which projects and image of a bike onto the road in front of you.
Thanks for the test light, Beryl. Here's more info on the laserlight: beryl.cc/shop/...

Front light should be blinking in day time and solid at night. Rear light should always be blinking as it is easier to notice and saves battery.

Blinking increases difficulty of judging speed and distance at night. Which is why both together work better.

Everyone should use German-approved front lights. German lights have to have a cut-off like car lights. So you can light the street up super bright without blinding people.
For the rear, one blinking one solid, placed as far apart vertically as possible.

I do both. I have two head lights. Blinky forward facing to alert motorist and solid facing downward and ahead to light up my path in the dark so I can avoid hazards on the road.
Rear solid red pointing straight back, and blinky pointed slighty downwards to reflect off my bike and road and not blind passing motorist.
Daytime forward facing blinking and it saves battery life.
Also wear bright clothing day or night.

    Here's what I do, personally:
Daytime on roads with lots of motor vehicles? Blinky.
Daytime on mixed use paths with pedestrians and other cyclists? Solid.
Daytime and you need your battery to last a long time for a long ride? Blinky.
    Nighttime? Solid.
I also have a mode on my lights where it'll be solid for a few seconds, then blink. Good mode to use at night. I have spare lights and multiple lights on my bike at all times, just in case!

Another good idea is to turn the backlight on your display and then rotate it forward as a second light, basically just for more oncoming visibility to pair with a blinky.

I want to make my comment before I actually watch the video. Because I want to see more less how correct I am. I don't ride a ton at night time because I am uncomfortable with riding in the dark. But generally, I do flashing lights in the daytime if I'm riding in traffic, and I do solid lights at night time if I am riding in the dark. Now it's time to watch the video and see if my opinion changes.

The UN of bike lights 😂. Also that motion actived LED is pretty cool, I'll have to pick one up

What about reflectors? Don't you guys have laws for that? Because over here we do.

Yeah most bikes already come with a front and rear reflector as well as a reflecter on the spokes of each wheel here in the US

Hey do you think Hi-Vis is necessary?

It's never necessary but it can't hurt. I won't get on my motorcycle without my hi-viz yellow vest.

Absolutely necessary. Else you're just a low-grade target. Reflective tape also a GOOD THING.
