Read this when I was a liberal arts major 15 years ago.. decades later I am taking on STEM in 2024 (what might seem to be a dumpster fire for women in many states/ countries- but - I aim) and am gently embracing feminine rage and those that see it as not just a one gendered experience- I think it bubbles in all, can be caused by all, and can be grieved and released or embraced healthy in all) I really appreciate this take. I had only really read Hawthorne’s “scarlet letter” in high school and didn’t connect to it at the time- but, I am so glad I ended up eventually being assigned to read more of his work- (I’d argue stronger pieces!) via several of his short stories! This one story in particular always stuck with me so strongly and I fell in love (and agony) with several (freely accessible) audio versions of it since; at one point I had to write an essay for junior college that wove Nathaniel Hawthorne and Ralph Waldo Emerson into one thesis and subsequent paper!! They oddly balance out now in my brain- and without too much contradictory- to me- even down to the literal illustrations of the Red with Hawthorne’s descriptions and the Green of Emerson (might be a stretch- but even in visual or not-linguistic art studies- red and green are complimentary colors on the wheel) This was such a sweet recap to inspire me and rekindle that spark of holding onto humanity and nurturing growth mindset with compassion for myself and others as i go about different schools, metropolis spaces or gardens... and still discover more of myself and create and grow from what is toxic and/or natural.. (hint: both exist gotta love epigenetic x body-mind connections!) Thank you for such a precise and not political summary here, I feel like you have a love for story telling which is what we all are here for :) cheers

I actually interpreted Beatrice in my last term paper as a femme fragile that is made into a femme fatale by Giovanni because he projects his own sexuality on her (hence the sexual imagery regarding Beatrice in combination with her plants etc) ^^' And Giovanni therefore fits the topos of Don Giovanni rather well. So I think there are quite a lot of different ways to interpret this short story

Absolutely! I love your thesis! This was a hasty summary I made for my high school students. There are SO many layers, and ways and various lenses through which to interpret this (and every!) story :)
